You know what happens when you order a coke or an iced tea or whatever while everyone else is drinking? Not a damned thing. If your friends are so far up your butt that they care what you're drinking, you need new friends, cause they're jerks.

I don't tend to hang out with alcoholics, but on those very few occasions that I ever went out with friends and drinks got involved, I was the permanent designated driver. My friends were always appreciative. Bought me food and gas as way of thanks.

Sometimes people feel judged when someone else isn't drinking. They know it's bad but now someone is actively avoiding it. They can also feel judged as when they drink a lot they will act different. When everybody is in an intoxicated state with lowered defence and less care for weirder conversations etc. they can perceive someone in a 'normal' state as dangerous. Now they have to watch out more with them etc. But still, people should pressure others for healthy decisions. With good friends you should be able to accept each other..

@@503appie While this is unfortunately quite true, as it's kind of the whole 'being part of a society' thing, I've become mostly immune to it. I've always been different, and I learned to just be comfortable being different. I even had one person ask me, quite earnestly, what it was like to "not be normal." To which I... don't have an answer. It's just who I am. Hell, all the way back to when I was 2 years old, my family would say "there's eeeeverybody else... and then there's [insert real name here]."

I really appreciate when people who can drink take a break from it and experience the odd “I don’t fit” discomfort, because it’s really hard to understand how much alcohol is a part of our culture until you stop drinking it. I don’t know that I phrased that exactly right, but I think it’s coherent.

You're absolutely right. I don't drink and it makes social gatherings difficult sometimes. Like if you've for a Christmas party to go to, do you go? Everyone will be drinking, it's weird if you don't drink. Do you want to be the only sober one? It'll be obvious if you don't drink and people will ask... Ugh such a minefield.

Fazerella of course you should still attend functions. There are so many persons who do not drink either for religious reasons, health conditions or by choice. Why must you stop enjoying activities because you don’t want to have alcohol? There are fun and tasty non-alcoholic beverages that you can consume. Honestly, not drinking alcohol has been the easiest break I have taken...going on 7 months now. Didn’t drink for my birthday, Christmas or Carnival. My family, friends and colleagues have just accepted my choice. The real struggle socialising is when you abstain from sugar, flour, dairy and meat. Alcohol is a “walk in the park”. But try doing all those, you definitely have to stay at home or walk with your own meals 🙈😂

Um, well that's a pretentious and kind of offensive way of putting it don't you think? To people that have actually experienced addiction and/or substance abuse... yeah, it's kind of a dramatic thing for them. No, what's truly amazing is that we live in a society where people choose to put an extremely dangerous drug like alcohol into their body, leading to the death of 60k Americans per year according to the CDC (cirrhosis, drunk driving etc COMBINED). But 80k die each year from diabetes alone. So yeah, kick sugar for a month and see if you don't end up feeling a little proud of yourself, and maybe even telling a few folks about it. It's not about being dramatic. Jesus 🙄

@@drummernate07 I came off a 5 year opiate addiction back in January lol. My point was more about how normalized alcohol is in this society that simply not drinking it for a month is seen as a massive deal. My relationship with my immediate family has improved drastically as well. Chyna mentioned that she was looking forward to just one glass and it reminded me of my journey - no judgment, just wanted to share my story. :) I "accidentally" became sober by stopping drinking for about a month or so and then having that one glass. I repeated that process a few times until basically, I didn't even want that one glass. The social aspect was hard to overcome but now I actually feel a sense of pride in telling people I don't drink because drinking was a peer pressure thing for me. I fooled myself into believing I liked it and I liked clubs, after a sheltered upbringing where drinking was completely off the cards. To me, drinking was a sign of liberation from my restrictive past. Now, ironically, not-drinking is a sign of liberation and free will to me. I have truly become more of my person.

I haven't had alcohol for almost six years, and when I made the decision to live an alcohol free life, I was in the Navy. Additionally, I grew up in an area that is famous for wine making and came from a family with a history of alcoholism. Early on, I did miss it, but as time went on, the cravings for it go away. These days, I do not miss it and I never have thoughts of drinking. I never feel socially awkward because I don't have a beer in hand or anything like that. The way I am, I am a very socially awkward person even without alcohol. Thank goodness for teas, juices, water, and the occasional soda. 18 Months ago I decided to quit drinking for 30 days. At the time I was drinking too much and too often. A beer before lunch, maybe another with lunch or a glass of wine. Then same thing in the evening. I also travel a lot for work and dinner with colleagues is always a drink before dinner, wine with the meal and then a night cap after. It started to affect my sleep. I would wake up at 4am and not be able to go back to sleep but I was too tired to do anything productive. Plus I was getting chunky. About 5 days into the detox I was sleeping so well throughout the night. Waking feeling refreshed and clear. I had energy all day. I just felt so good. The end of the 30 days detox was my birthday but when the day came I felt so good I didn't want to drink so I extended the detox. It's now been 18 months since I've had a drink and I have never felt better in my life. I've lost more than 30 punds, at least 12 of which were lost just by not drinking alcohol. It's been one of the best things I've ever done. I don't miss it at all. I've actually become quite anti-booze. The way it's so socially acceptable and everywhere. The way you have to explain that you don't drink. The way that I felt so good without it made me think how bad I actually felt when I was drinking and didn't even notice. I no longer drink and my life is a thousand times better for it.

Drinking alters your brain if you do it enough or do it for long enough. It creates neurological pathways that you can no longer “control.” It sounds like you should challenge yourself to 100 days or more. I’ve done the 30 day break only to find myself right back at it and almost bingeing because I was making up for lost time. I’m doing 100 days now to really give myself time to reassess my relationship with alcohol and to give myself time to create better habits and different coping mechanisms when I’m stressed/anxious/etc. I read “Quit Like a Woman,” and it was really eye opening. Best of luck. Go the route that makes you feel the happiest and healthiest!

Please keep going without alcohol. You are doing great! Think of the toll it began to take on your body! Is your pancreas feeling better? I’m 5 days no alcohol. I kept fooling myself thinking after quitting for awhile that I could have a couple drinks. What a lie my mind told me! I would have one, then the 2nd…. Vodka and diet soda. I would measure 2 oz of vodka per drink and was good about not going past 8 oz per day. Then I found myself increasing to 10 oz a day. ALWAYS a hangover that would last 24 hours, so I wouldn’t drink. Then,a day or 2 later…I’d start the vicious cycle all over again. I wound up in the ER with rapid heart rate, shortness of breath and chest pains. Anxiety off the charts. Very costly and sooo not worth it! I’m praying for you! Your baby needs you. I’m 69 yrs old and have drank on and off my entire adult life. It finally caught up to me. Watch videos here on KZfaq about the benefits of not drinking. They help me a lot. Take care! You got this!

Do you guys not have alcohol-free beer in the US? They've recently permeated the Irish market and are brilliant. We have such a social drinking culture, and it's great to be able to participate, have a nice tasting drink to feel part of the group, avoid any queries and drive home!

I've got a friend who went to AA for years and he told me once, "Non-alcohol beer is for non-alcoholics." Meaning that, if you have a problem with drinking even alcohol-free beer could cause you to relapse because the smell and taste will cause those cravings to kick back in.

I live in Wisconsin, which is where they live, WI has the biggest drinking culture in the US, there are more bars per capita in the city where I grew up than anywhere in the US. Drinking really is deep in american culture. When I tell people I don't drink alcohol it is usually followed up by "oh, so you were alcoholic and had to quit, right?" Ever since I turned 21 people look at me like I am trying to be a nun when I tell then I don't drink. I just don't drink, I can't afford it, my bloodline is more likely to being alcoholics, and I actually listened to the whole "don't do drugs or drink alcohol or else your body will get really messed up" in school. I never really seen a reason to drink. Heck, my parents use to tease me that we should all go to the bar for my 21st birthday to get me my first drink but after a while they started to see it turn out badly for their friends and kids I went to school with and support my decision now. For a majority of people though, I just seem like a holier-then-thou party-pooper any time I don't accept a beer.

That point about feeling left out of a cultural norm is spot on. I'm a uni student who doesn't drink. About ten year ago and for three years in a row, I used to drink my way through at least 1, sometimes 2, bottles of wine each Friday night. I liked the tipsy feeling and the numb sensation that came with that. It began to occur to me over time that alcohol is a social lubricant, but it's also literally poison for our bodies and being tipsy or drunk doesn't make your life problems change or go away. Five years ago, I limited my drinking to having a social drink (a beer or 1-2 glasses of wine) with family or friends every couple of weeks, and love being stone cold sober at home on a Friday night watching a good movie. Life is too short to booze it away.

I actually stopped drinking alcohol a couple days before this video was posted and I haven't looked back ever since! It was really eye-opening at first to see how much I was actually consuming (which really wasn't that much compared to many people I know) and also to understand just how embedded in American culture alcohol really is. I have so much more energy, I don't have to deal with those dreadful hangovers, my stress and anxiety levels are at all time lows, and because I have more energy, I have also been able to increase my fitness and run so much more than I ever did before. The benefits of giving up alcohol far outweigh the costs. Thankfully I started my sober journey right at the beginning of quarantine so being able to navigate through life these past 6 months has been a little bit easier since I didn't need alcohol to cope.

Brain fog and tiredness are pretty common symptoms of minor/moderate alcohol withdrawal. Unfortunately, the tiredness may take a few months to go away. My dad's family is strongly prone to addictive behaviors - including alcoholism. That means that I've periodically been witness to acohol withdrawal from mild to extreme as various people at various points stopped drinking. It's one of those things that you don't realize how much you're doing it until you stop doing it. Like eating Girl Scout cookies. Additional note: the sugary cravings are because the yeast/candida in your digestive tract want to replace the sugar that you were feeding them with alcohol. It'll get better as you have some yeast die off and it rebalances.

I did this for lent, stopped drinking for 45 days. I did it cause I thought I just always wanted to have drink. Get off of work = have a drink, hang out with friends = have a drink, go out for diner = have a drink, it's my day off = let's have a drink. I was really surprised by how easy it was and my experience was very similar to yours and had a lot of support. I was expecting to feel a dramatic difference but this video does a great job of showing what it's like. When it was over I forgot how much I hate hangovers. I related to that comedy club experience since I too was reluctant to go watch a live band at bar because all they sold was alcohol and I felt weird just standing there having a soda or water and so I didn't go.

I quit drinking for January, at the end thought I would quit for another month, since there was the benefit of having way more energy in the evenings. Now, at the end of March, I'm drinking again at social outings and also sometimes at home. I used to drink about 3 evenings a week about 2 to 3 craft beers. More at social outings. And I'm now slipping back to my old habits. I find it difficult to make up my mind about it. There is something so much fun about going on drunk adventures having deep talks about nothing. I did make up my mind about drinking beer and watching a movie at home. That situation is just not special enough for alcohol. But hangovers suck really bad. OK. These were just my thoughts. What I have been told by ex alcoholics and I finally found out for myself is too stay away completely away from the old crowd and hang outs. You MUST start a completely new way with your self. Start up new activities, outdoor activities, indoor projects. Keep yourself busy and your thoughts on positivity. Look up and not on the ground. Be honest with yourself. This helped me through the troubles with this. When I finally got my self together and on a Ferm path With confidence I went to a few of the old hangouts and saw the old crowd and the first surprise they saw in me is I turned down the offer of drinking. I also started to preach the positive way to life and living. I found out that by doing this I was rejected and not excepted in that environment. I walked out leaving a lot of drinks on the table that MY FRIENDS BOUGHT ME!. As I walked out I had the feeling of power and a achievement. And I didn’t look back. It is our choice as a Individual. The am 56 years of age and going strong and straight. The nice thing about it is that I didn’t crave it and I am not in a uncomfortable feeling when I am in the presence of people and family members who do. The sad part of all of this is that I know what the end of the road is seeing people who have gone over the edge with the alcohol abuse. The day of this Christmas a fellow that was a few years older than I passed away,he was 60 years old and seeing him the last time at the club he was not in good condition sitting at the bar with drink in hand. It's nice to think when you quit something bad you're just automatically going to turn into a genius CrossFit athlete, but just think of it as you have to pay alittle for the bad effects alcohol has on your brain. According to family and friends I would repeat myself many times in conversations ECT. Many falls. I had prayed to our Lord to please help me. I was on a train wreck....out of control. God did answer my prayers with a DWI. It's ok. The best I have felt in years. Very expensive bad choice I made however I'm thankful for his blessings. I have no cravings for alcohol at all. I'm on a new journey with my new life. Good friends that are always there for me. No pressure to drink alcohol. I made it clear I'm not interested in being around it. Life is 100 percent better now. Never want the devil poison in me again. I hope this inspires others.

It is interesting to see the perspective of people who were just casual drinkers. I had to stop cause I sucked at drinking. Love your videos, and thank you.

My rule is just that I don't pay for alcohol. It's served me pretty well - I can still have a glass or two at weddings or new years parties, and friends who know this is the rule are suddenly less willing to badger me about it because they know they won't convince me unless they're also willing to buy a drink for me. It's a pretty solid deterrent for most of them most of the time. It definitely stops it from becoming A Drinking Habit, too.

The difference between her and me is that as an alcoholic I would drink the nastiest wine on the planet specifically for the buzz lol

@@supernova11491 lol no I haven't been that desperate for alcohol. Thank God or I'd be in trouble now. It's easier to find wine than rubbing alcohol at the store 😂😜,😯

@@Veronica.John10-10 Well congratulations! You are sober now! I don't miss it one bit! I think the word "alcoholic" has lost its impact. I just say "I was a heavy boozer for awhile." And say it a bit exaggerated to bring a sense of humour to the conversation (and keep it light). If I say I quit smoking, people say "Congratulations." Interestingly, when you say you quit drinking...most people become silent (and that's okay too)! Cheers💛 Oh yah, never let the "toilet paper bandits" get you down.😋
