You could also use a contrasting spine (like "quarter bound" in book binding) with the 12 x 12 making up the rest, so you could go quite large.

If you’re going to add binder rings then it would need to be done before construction of the album. The easiest way once it’s assembled is to either use a hidden binding system (lots of tutorials on YT as to how to do that and super simple) or you could make little signatures of papers (by holding them in half) and sew them into the binding.
