For me an added fear-factor is that the gorosei do not speak a single word throughout the whole chapter. They are killing machines on a mission and they know what they are doing.

Something to note as well is the story of Nika and joy boy is probably a lot more personal to the giants. Since their life spans are so long the events of the void century just as well could have been told to them by parents/grandparents that were there.

If there's something working in Dorry and Broggy's favor towards survival it's that it looked like two unamed giants were accompanying them that could become the red shirts of the landing party.

The zoro lucci fight was just a plot device to keep zoro in the labophoase, hence why it seemed to drag on for longer than it should have

Egghead keeps hitting points where we think “yeah it could end here” and just keeps getting more and more insane

On the Zoro topic, I try to remember the manga production cycle is like the old chapter-a-week pulp stories. They may have a plan, but they still need to fill chapters and panels and make up stuff as they go along. I imagine part of this is taking characters not central to the plot and putting them in situations that you can resolve later when it is relevant, a bit like moving a piece in the early game of chess -- you don't always know how it'll pay off. And sometimes there are minor fumbles. In this case, they thought it would be a good idea to show how Zoro is progressing compared to Luffy by having him fight someone that only Luffy could handle many hundreds of chapters ago. Having Zoro fight with a handicap was a good idea, because they can choose, based on the pacing of the main story, if they need to draw the fight out or end it immediately. Now they get to this chapter, they break it down, and now they *know* it is time for the 5 Elders two page spread, they realize everyone needs to be dragged along. It wouldn't make sense to end the fight off-panel, so just give just enough panels to make it look cool and pay off the set up, and then move on. Given the production cycle, I think this was handled extraordinarily well. Also, it kept Zoro from wandering off and making it more difficult to get everyone together.

Y'know, I love the amount of references there are to futuristic settings in this arc. With Luffy looking a lot like Astro Boy in cover of volume 106, to the lightsabers and whatnot. But what I really appreciate is just how subtle Oda was with how the sandworm eating Luffy is very similar to how Han and Leia were nearly eaten by a very large worm in the same way during Episode 5 of Star Wars. Just with less giants severing its head afterwards...

The sandworm has me thinking of "Dune" quite a bit... and I could go into the books and the god emperor being half-worm and the symbolism behind agriculture guy being shai-halud and all that... but instead all I'll say is I hope Luffy rides him at some point.

The Itsumade is fascinating. It's like an embodiment of the "lamentation of the dead" that hangs around battlefields and feeds on loss. It's like the personification of the line "Why are we still here... just to suffer?"

I love the fact that Oda isn't circle jerking us around, like having each of the gorusei members for individual arcs in the story, this is the true stakes of where we are currently and the tension is reaching a boiling point so its more logical to just call them all there at once to snuff out the problem especially considering the threat VP poses to the world. Its perfect and its what i would expect given the dire immportance of the situation.

Given how that St. Ju Peter stands out amongst the Gorosei as a sandworm remember back in the Library of Ohara we saw an map of space we saw one of the moons with a chunk missing I believe that Ju Peter is an alien from that moon & hid in that bit of the moon and was ejected and landed on the world of One Piece.

"Shhhh...listen" They all pause and listen. They hear a faint but clear violin echoing from the top of a hill near the shore. It is a familiar tune that Pirates used to sing long ago. "C'mon let's go!" says the first boy and everyone else starts running towards the direction where the music was coming from. They finally reach the top of the cliff and they find a tall skeleton with an afro sitting alone and playing violin in front of some tombstones. The kids walk towards him when they saw the tombstones clearly. There were no names. Upon looking closer, they saw there were some items placed on each on the individual tombstones. One had three swords, one had books, one had a long slingshot, one had a metallic rod, and so on. The kids came quietly and stood behind the skeleton who was sitting in front of a tombstone which was bigger than the others and placed right at the center. That tombstone was also unmarked but there was an old straw-hat on top of it with a jolly roger of a skull and cross-bones with the skull wearing a straw hat. One of the kids who a bit older than the others, gasps. "Mugiwara no Luffy..." he mumbles. The skeleton stops playing and turns around. "Oh hello there" the skeleton speaks with a gentle tone raising his hat with his hand to greet them. "Did you know him? The P...Pirate King?" gasps the kid. The skeleton becomes silent for a few seconds and lets out a gentle yohoho. "Yes, he was my Captain" smiles the skeleton. All of them gasps astonished. Their eyes widen and smiles. "Did you really sail with the Pirate King!?" one of them exclaims. "Well of course I did little one, I was blessed with the honor to be the ship musician because every pirate crew needs music you see!" "What were they like? The Pirate King and his crew?" exclaims another, all excited. "Oh where to begin! Well for starters, our shipwright was an eccentric yet brilliant cyborg who only ever drank cola. Our archeologist was a young lady who was troubled by her past yet found friendship with all of us. Our ship’s doctor was a tiny raccoon-dog, reindeer fellow. The marksman of the ship was a coward, but also noble and good-hearted. Our navigator was a foxy young woman with a nasty habit of stealing. Depending on its hybrid form it might take the first spot from Ethan.) 3. Gyuki (Spiders are just cool, and we've seen the most from him so far.) 4. Sand Wyrm (In terms of craziest this one is definitely my no. 1, it just looks so weird.) 5. Hoki (The tamest design of the bunch, just looks like a boar. He also didn't do anything this chapter, so need to see more from him too.) Overall, depending on what we see in the coming chapters with how they hybrid forms look and how they each fight the list is definitely subject to change.

One piece is just beginning and this is gonna be the peak we been waiting for so so long😊

My theory with Zoro is that he isn’t 100% healed from Wano. He literally met the grim reaper knocking on deaths door and just like after Thriller Bark, Zoro was exhausted and could barely stand. I think he is going through something similar but since the characters are a lot stronger, he can deal with the pain better but isn’t at his best right now.

One thing about Zoro in this chapter. He never responds to Sanji at all, but he reacts to hearing him call him a liability. What if he just knew how serious Sanji was being and actually realized that he WAS being a liability by toying with Lucci. Like you said Zoro likes to make it more even so it's more of a challenge, but this may have made him realize it's not the time for it. Also that last panel looks like he used conqueror's haki with black lightning right?

It’s something you see a lot in One Piece, but especially with the Gorosei, then being HUGE really helps sell just how scary and dangerous they are.

I think the point of zoro fighting lucci for a while was intentional by oda because you don't want zoro wondering around by himself on egg head considering his sense of direction

I feel like the sand wyrm got the black maria treatment where i think it was planned to have a 4 flapped jaw before oda settled to give it humen teeth

Of course that one is my favorite 😂 Second is the worm because what the hell? A worm should have been so uncool and unremarkable but look at him, he is just so COOL then comes the bird just because it looks AWESOME in your tumbnail then saturn because he lost his charm next to others and then the boar because even with saturn here that we know of for some time he still managed to be less interesting 😂

What I loved about the chapter is how the Gorosei being the basically final word for the marines/world government means they answer to no-one else basically. So when they are brought in all of them know whats been happening and know what needs doing so they all spring into action straight way without any world to each other. It really show how well then know each other and just how frightening they are for them to all be there.

Merphy, did you notice that the Elders’ info boxes don’t say they have Devil Fruits? For example, Markus Mars is simply called “Itsumade,” not “Mythical Zoan, Bird Type-Model Itsumade.” This could imply that these ARE the Elders’ true forms, and their human shapes are just a disguise, not the other way around.
