In this episode of We're in Between, Patricia and Casey discuss about the 54th episode of As Told by Ginger "A Lesson in Tightropes". Continuing from the previous episode, "Kiss Today Goodbye", Darren finally decides to break up with Ginger for Simone. Ginger is heartbroken about this and ends up in the hospital suffering from appendicitis. Meanwhile Carl gets furious when his estranged father Jonas visits Ginger more often and he fears it will ruin the relationship between Lois and Dr. Dave. Fans have called this episode the most dramatic and depressing episode of the entire series. But is it still decent despite this or is it too sad for its own good?

When Carl tells Dr Dave he’s rather stay with him it was so touching and made me think this was that moment in which Carl grew up as a character. Because his father was not in the picture, he had to “man up” for his mother’s sake and because Dr Dave came in the picture he felt some security and that came full circle starting from “Kiss today goodbye” in which Carl stated that house hunting was the final act of him being the “man of the house” before he passes the torch to Dr Dave. This became to be in which he tells Dr Dave he rather stay with him than go to his mom and Jonas, even holding his hand as a symbol IMO of his letting his wall down.

I'm glad that you looked at the situation from both sides. With Ginger being our girl, of course people want to take her side. But her and Darren genuinely were growing apart and with their different after school activities, barely had time for one another. Ginger even considered wanting Sasha again. _Sasha!_ The same dude who was barely nice to her and is dating a girl who has all the qualities that he acted like he hated. It was better that they went their separate ways. Besides, they'd been dating since what, wintertime? It's autumn by this episode. That's a long time for a teen romance.

This was indeed a very good episode. It gave the audience a lot to think about. How life can just fall apart suddenly and even amidst devastation there's hope and signs of a future going forward. I had to feel sort of bad for Jonas too. Even after having to step out of his family he gets to meet the man who will be the new dad. Well, even if its not met with animosity I can't imagine that being easy for a father.

This is one of my favorite As told by Ginger episodes. It was quite emotional and scary when I first saw it, but now when I see it I view Ginger's appendicitis as a physical analogy to her broken heart! Both can be powerfully painful in their own way and who didn't feel as though they were about to die and be rushed to the hospital after they got their heart broken!

Why isn't Simone upset that Darren didn't tell her that he was already dating someone? Really bugs me. I know the Ginger stuff is a big deal in this episode but I love the Carl and Hoodsie stuff. Carl staying with Dr Dave after the surgery (am I the only one who teared up when he reached for Dave's hand to hold?) and him being worried that his mother might be confused about her feelings for him with her first husband nearby with this emotional trauma. Hoodsie and Carl reading bodice ripper romance novel - exploring their sexuality in this subtle way really made me respect the show even more. Both of them have their ideas about romance confirmed in the end of the episode was wonderful. Carl with his future father and Mother together and then Hoodsie seeing Orion talking with Ginger. I really wish we had more interactions with Dr Dave and Ginger in the series!

This episode was just so damn good! From ginger singing that great song, Darren breaking up with her definitely made me tear up. But to see how she was sick, but made us think the heart break made her shut down; Lois frantically freaking out because ginger has a fever & unconscious was down right scary. Dr.Dave saving the day telling ginger she’ll be alright while they’re wheeling her to prep for ER surgery. Carl character literally grew up this episode, he could’ve went into with his family but instead stayed out side with Dr.Dave. He resents his father for being a dead beat, he loved Dr.Dave. He was relieved to see them kiss & comfort each other in ginger room. This was such a damn good episode! I literally haven’t seen the series since it was airing on the splat! To watch it on Paramount + bought back sooo many great memories. Rugrats will forever be my favorite Klasky Csupo show, but As Told By Ginger is #2 followed by Rocker Power…

I absolutely love this episode. I remember when I was in high school that I totally empathized with Ginger's mindset of trying to compromise who she is if it meant that Darren would stay with her, or try to be more like Simone. From a character standpoint, this might have to do with the fact that Ginger and Darren have been in each other's lives for so long and were so close that she loses sight of who she is at the thought of him leaving.

Fantastic job on the montage shown during Ginger's surgery. Also, Dr. Dave is SUCH a gentleman. I appreciate how he and Jonas were able to keep the peace. Hoodsey cracks me up at being insulted Ginger didn't appreciate his reading a totally inappropriate story to someone recovering from heartbreak (as well as surgery)! So...Dodie finally gets Darren to break up with Ginger - I wonder how she feels now? Darren and Ginger talk - but not really saying/listening/hearing how they each really feel. Darren seems torn - he expresses frustration with all that is Ginger, and breaks up with her at Dodie's suggestion. And then he says: "Things with Simone are just...easier." That's NOT a reason, Darren, that's a lousy cop-out! One more thing - the hospital staff worker is using gloves to empty trash cans, yet gives a recovering patient a stained envelope from the trash? Ew...

You do not know what this episode meant to me several years after I caught it on the web (someone from Canada was gracious enough to record and download the episodes before it aired on Splat!). I have related to Ginger since the series began, the show is in fact the reason I got more into designing my own characters and how I got into "Daria". It's also my tribute to the show that I use Ginger's pictures as my avi on several social media platforms. Almost two years ago this summer I had my gallbladder removed and before that it was so painful that I was afraid my appendix would burst. Also during that time, an online friend of mine and I were dealing with a lot of strain and arguments with each other, like we were practically sniping at one another and I don't think any of us were satisfied. Just four days after my surgery, me and her had an argument and she angrily replied back and unfollowed me. I really felt like my insides burst and even after me and her made up, it really still hurted. I still go to therapy regarding that and I still sometimes stress over whether she finds me worthwhile and worry she will toss me off the next time we have a disagreement. Our friendship isn't perfect but it seems to be improving more and more, I hope to meet her in person this Spring. I still stress, because I am insecure, that she will either find me too dull or leave because some of her other friends are "easier", so when Darren told Ginger that Simone is easier than "headstrong, opinionated, wonderful" Ginger, it really shot me harder when I re-watched it with older eyes. Things are improving though and I'm slowly gaining more self-confidence. And my friend cares, like Darren she really cares. I'm sorry I really had to let off how I related to this episode and I love the podcast. Thank you for taking your time to read this.

See, I want to be on Ginger's side; she really did love Darren and was willing to keep trying harder to improve their relationship, sure, she wasn't interested in football, I'm not either, in fact, I just don't care for it I'm sorry, however, there had to be a compromise. Darren, on the other hand, shouldn't have to expect Ginger to care about football if he really wanted things to work out between them, he seemed pushy about it and I could tell he did love Ginger otherwise why would he stay? It rubbed me the wrong way when he was willing to throw in the towel and end things, but after listening to the podcast and remembering when he went with Ginger and the gang to the fair and Ginger was completely disregarding Darren's feelings. I think Ginger and Darren weren't truly ready to be together, maybe the fact that Ginger leaving to another school for a semester gave a different insight to Darren. Y'know that one saying about absence and the heart growing fonder. I think Darren might've misinterpreted his feelings towards Ginger. They were better off as friends, imo, otherwise it would've saved them of this teenage turmoil. I am super against cheating and what Darren and Simone did, it ruined my perspective of Darren, he was once a trusting friend and was always there for Ginger, only to two time her and date someone behind her back. Simone was innocent in SOME ways, I'm saying that mildly, and she didn't know about his current relationship with Ginger, surely she had to have known somehow. Dodie, one who already went behind Ginger's back, should've learned her lesson the first time and told Ginger about Darren and Simone. It's Girl Code, come on! This is actually one of my favorite episodes and I am so disappointed in Darren. Dodie and Maci aren't getting away that easily because, again, it's girl code and they should've told her.

In a way though it shows that Dodie may have matured as she couldn't keep her mouth shut in Middle School and wouldn't hesitate to spread gossip and now she's debating whether or not to tell Ginger or have Ginger find out on her own

@@tierefuerimmer9635 Plus "Wicked Game" still happened (even tho is barely acknowledge through a one line by Courtney), chances are that Ginger would've took it as Dodie trying to pull that sh*t again, getting defensive and ignoring her. Leaving the ball on Darren's court rather than being the perceived ill gossiper truly feels that it was the better call on Dodie's part.

I always wondered in earlier episodes how Jonas relationship to Carl was, because in the few episodes when we had Ginger and him together, Carl never seemed to be involved or seemed to actively ignore him. As far as I remember, that's the first episode where Carl admits how he feels about his dad. Before this episode, I always wondered if Carls father was someone else, because both Jonas and him never showed any interest in each other. This episode answered this question perfectly to me. And also, that's one of the As told by Ginger episodes that I always remembered throughout the years, because the situation is so dramatic.

As I said in my comment in "Kiss Today Goodbye", I was going to discuss the tie-in with "Detention", "Kiss Today Goodbye" and now "A Lesson in Tightropes". Because the fact Ginger had detention for falling asleep during a test in "Stuff Will Kill Ya", she was unable to attend Darren's football game. This would ultimately have them breakup in "A Lesson in Tightropes". Which this ended up Ginger having appendicitis and having her being hospitalized. The remark of Carl being an atheist really surprised me. It never acured to me that Nicktoon characters could atheists. Sure, I've seen religious remarks in Rugrats. But I never thought there would be a reverse in Nicktoons. The conversation between Jonas and Dr. Dave was very powerful and I actually loved it. With what I heard in "An Even Steven Holiday" review, I now I have context with why Carl had resentment toward his biological father and understand his motives for keeping Lois and Dr. Dave together (since he obviously sees him as a much better father figure than Jonas). I'm so sad to see this end, but I'm looking to see how this series eventually raps up. Thank you again Patricia for reviewing this series. And I'm definitely looking forward to "Dodie's Big Break" and "The Wedding Frame."

In an alternate universe, Courtney is with Dodie, Macey, and Ginger, and after Dodie and Macey leave, Courtney stays with her, worried about all the pain Ginger is in. It's Courtney who first realizes that Ginger is in actual physical distress, Courtney who brings Lois and Dr. Dave to Ginger's aid, and Courtney even goes with Ginger to the hospital, the beginning of what is ultimately an arc that sees Courtney confess her feelings to Ginger and the two of them ending up a couple. Maybe if this show had come out 15 years later :(
