That was a wonderful garden tour and I loved it! As a child I grew up on our farm where we had a big garden and lots of patches of extra corn and beans, squashes and pumpkins. My mom and dad loved gifting fresh and canned vegetables and fruits to their close relatives. We also had an orchard of apple trees and a large grape arbor and a strawberry patch. Mom and dad loved sweet potatoes “yams” and they planted a large bed of those, which they kept covered on chilly days and nights with a thick covered roof that could be leaned back against the garden fence during warm sunny days until it was time to plant them in their raised beds. You have a lot of nice veggies growing along with lots of healthy fruit trees! You’ve already accomplished a lot and it’s still not quite summer!

For the life of me, can't figure out why you don't have more subscribers! I feel like I've visited friends while walking through their garden...just friends I'll likely never meet and who don't know me!🙃 Buggy holding Mama's hand warmed this grandma's heart. That is one seriously healthy echinacea! JEALOUS (in a good way) that your Kiwi is blooming! Our male and female plants have made it through winters further south of you, and have come back well this year with more growth over a similar arbor...but no blooms yet. Meg, you look so beautiful! May the Lord continue to bless your family, including the little one we've yet to meet, and increase your bounty from this year's garden!
@joannabowers1358
@joannabowers1358 Ай бұрын
The rule of thumb around here is that when the potatoes begin to die back, you can dig some for eating. For those to be saved for the winter, you let the plant completely die before digging them. This allows them to harden off. I’m beginning to have die back, so I told my son to plan on visiting and bring the grandkids in a couple of weeks to help bring in the harvest.

I just did this and will never not anymore: I dried the green parts of leeks until they were crispy and flakey, then put them in the spice grinder (coffee bean grinder), and now have delicious leek powder in my spice rack! It is amazing. I can put it in soups, stews, dips... (I also did it with celery and that is even better, esp. the leaves). The giant blackberries might be ollolieberry. They are a hybrid and the biggest blackberry I have seen. Did you have any of those when you lived in CA?

I enjoy that the Hollars speak with joy when speaking of their garden. Some comparable channels don't really seem to like actually keeping a garden, nor the food it produces. For channels like that, it is all about making some point: "We are doing away with the grocery store! The food from a grocery store is not as nutritious!" It is nice to just wallow in the pride and happiness of growing things just to enjoy the process and the results.

I remember my first productive garden in Nebraska on base housing. I had lined our entire yards chain link fencing with raised beds and planted the entire thing with peas, and tomatoes and cucumbers...and I would go outside to find all the neighborhood kids (for like three neighborhoods around, too) standing around picking peas or tomatoes or cucumbers off the vines and eating them, and their parents watching them, mystified, going "What did you DO to my KIDS!? They NEVER eat vegetables!" lol. It was awesome. All those kids would come round asking what I was doing while I was digging in the dirt and I'd let them 'help' me, so it was just fun to watch. Even my hubby who used to barf when made to eat peas can eat them off the vine while they are crunchy and sweet.

Tame those hops! I grow the bines for food in 20 gallon pots with support. The hops die to the ground in winter. In the spring, I harvest all of the tender shoots except the most vigorous one. The shoots look like little asparagus. They are pleasantly bitter. Great in scrambled eggs! Superb pickled! At the end of the year, I turn out the pots and collect the extra roots to cook as a vegetable. They are sweet like carrots! I repot as many rhizomes as I want and wait for spring. This way, there are no invasive roots giving me nightmares. 😄

I love this ♡ We butcher at home and this is our exact mindset. However, we chose to take our 2 steer to butcher and the most amazing part of that was when the butcher saw me come back he remembered their names and told me he could tell how much they were loved because they were some of the easiest animals that he ever had to handle and that they were calm and at peace until the very end. Their fear being in a new place was my biggest fear, so that was such a relief to me. I miss the boys, but they have already provided a couple dozen meals for our family, and I am so grateful for the time we had them and that we have a name and face to remember with each meal.

You have so much to be proud of with all the hard work and time you've put into your homestead. The best part is when the plants reseed. It's like little seed blessings.

Hops: I wonder if you installed a tall underground barrier that prevents the roots from spreading might help. They usually use them for trees.

Concering the squash bugs. Instead of taking the netting off for pollenation, take a cheap artist paint brush or q-tip and hand pollinate your squash to save them from the bugs. Just get the pollen good on the brush and then go to the next flower, or get it from the plant next to it and just keep going from one flower to the other. It really isn't that labourous and will give you peace of mind.

I live in SE Washington, where hops are a major crop. Farmers grow them on crisscrossing polls until a field is just wall after wall of green. I love the smell when they are harvested. But yes! They will take over like bamboo. Even a piece of root will take off when abandoned on the right piece of dirt. May have been something best planted in a large plastic pot, even if the pot was buried, just to keep the off shoots contained.

TIP for early potatoes; when you are expecting a frost shake some straw over the plants, just until you can't really see them. They will be protected from a light frost and as it warms up they will grow up through the straw. Hay packs too much, straw is best or some brushy stuff like pine branches with thick needle cover.

Thanks for the heads up about the greenstalks!! I've been wanting to order some for a while. No time like the present! Who doesn't love a sale and a discount code?? I just grabbed 2 stalks and 2 spinners. Hopefully with all the orders that I see in the comments that people made, maybe Greenstalk will send you one of the basket ones that you've been wanting as a thank you for all the business you just sent them. For an unplanned garden, that sure is looking great. You won't regret having it once you start getting your harvests. Meg I'm wishing you all the best for an easy and trouble free delivery of your coming little one. I know you're getting close, so thanks for another video with your smiling face. I hope Ben has his catcher's mitt ready!!

Hey Jason! You can leave potatoes in the ground until you're ready to harvest unless you're going to plant other things.

So this video was posted about time of birth od Elizabeth (she is now week old and video is up about a week)? It is nice coincidence or great way to honour her and make a time stamp "this is how it looked when you came to us" 🙂

My chamomile that I planted last year has been popping up everywhere I had a plant last year and it cracks me up. I'm just letting it do what it wants and transplanting to places I want it to be if it's in the garden walkway or another bed that's about to be planted with intentional things. Lol. I have been loving seeing them all come up. Same thing with sunflowers too actually. I have probably 40 that have come up so far that were dropped from the maybe 10 plants I had done last year so I've been transplanting those to intentional spots too. There are a lot in my beds that I'm not sure I will leave where they grew. It's made me so happy to see them coming up everywhere. Last year was my first year growing sunflowers.
