I know Sunday is Band Maid's day, but this Sunday is Mother's Day so I would recommend "Song of Women" by the HU feat Lizzy Hale. If this song got your ancestors blood pumping, then this song will definitely lift your feminine soul to new Heights. I play this every year for my mother, God rest her soul.

@@mogaman28 And that is your prerogative. But The HU Band's collaborations with Western artists have drawn more and more people into the sphere of folk metal and that is always a good thing. It's no time to get too parochial in your thinking. These collaborations do nothing to injure or demean The HU Band and the Mongolian people in any way, shape or form. More people interested in music, no matter the genre, is always a good thing.

I like the touch at the beginning of the video one man is on a horse like their ancestors rode and is followed by the modern equivalent 'steel horses". The lyrics are basically if you come at us, we will fuck shit up.

On a more serious note: The Hu are Mongolia’s biggest cultural export. They were founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, by four classically trained musicians. They combine traditional Mongolian chanting, throat singing and instruments with modern electric bass and guitar, to create something that is both metal and oddly hypnotizing. Their first videos posted on youtube in 2018 went globally viral, and today their videos collectively have almost 100x as many views as the entire population of Mongolia. They have done several international tours in both Europe and North America. Much of their music is about Mongolian history, traditions and culture. They sing about respecting their ancestors while also being modern. “Yuve Yuve Yu” is about people who mindlessly boast about their glorious past without doing anything to achieve greatness today. Personnel: Galbadrakh "Gala" Tsendbaatar - morin khuur (traditional horsehead fiddle); throat singing Nyamjantsan "Jaya" Galsanjamts - tumur hhuur (flute) tsuur (jew’s harp); throat singing Enkhsaikhan "Enkush" Batjargal - morin khuur; throat singing Temuulen "Temka" Naranbaatar - tovshuur (Mongolian lute); backing vocals They are joined by four additional musicians for live tours. Here are some of their most popular videos: “Wolf Totem” (you just watched this) “Yuve Yuve Yu” (How strange, how strange) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJqojbijlaiplnk.html “The Great Chinggis Khaan” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pqphmqeExtWVlXU.html “Shoog Shoog” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mt2iZ7aBsJfDhI0.html They were commissioned to write a theme song for the Star Wars Video Game franchise, and even wrote an alien language for it: “Sugaan Essena” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pbCKmaiZmKvHmYk.html They have also done some epic covers of Metallica. Here are two: “Through the Never” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htx7rLWVnZebm6M.html “Sad But True” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9aodMKL3a28j4E.html And finally, a collaboration with the great Lzzy Hale of Halestorm: “Song of Women” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8p-ZLhqs9zZeZc.html Clip from one of their recent tours, when I saw them live: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abpxjc98v5-9oGw.html

Back in 2019 I bought Babymetal tickets, and they had the Hu opening; I don't know who I was more excited to see, Babymetal, or Th Hu. It was a great show, the masculine energy of the Hu and feminine energy of the girls was a great pairing. There is throat singing at the beginning of the video too, the high pitched whistling sounds as the logo is displayed is overtones from throat singing. The high pitched bird like calls are from the fiddles. There's another song where they make the fiddles whinny like a horse. They can do a lot with their instruments.

The Hu are such an interesting group. First, the throat singing is amazing. Secondly, the Mongolians are a horse culture (real or mechanical). A lot of their sounds emanate from living on the plains of Mongolia with horses as the primary mode of travel. They definitely use those elements in their music. It's pretty damned powerful! Princess NittPicc, thank you for reacting to this songs. It's very enlightening about the culture from another part of the world. Music truly is the universal language!

Hoy, i left my first ever comment on a reactor video like 1 day ago on your Eluveitie reaction. I don't know much of your musical taste, but if you'd like to keep going about The Hu, their next "mainstream" tune is Yuve yuve yu. Pretty cool song tbh. The next you could do to move to an other very cool band would be "A Woman Song", a Hu song featuring Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, another great group you could hear 1 or 2 great songs from. (for real even on its own the woman's song is REALLY touching, brings me to tears everytime). Welp second comment i leave on a reactor video, guess you had me convinced ! Can't wait to see the next !

I was thrilled to see that you had checked The Hu out. I figured you would love them, and you didn't disappoint. These guys are absolutely fantastic live. They do have an electric guitar and bass they use in studio and live. Much of these gentlemen are classically trained in Mongolian music. Some of the members, such as the unseen bass guitarist, are classically trained in western music. (The bassist is principal bassoonist in the national Mongolian orchestra). As people, they are a warm-hearted group of guys. As for other videos, I like "Black Thunder" (the one with 2 parts). It's epic. Then for a different side to them, "Shireg Shireg" the acoustic session, and "The Song of Women" with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. I have seen them live, and when there were 8 guys all throat-singing during "Black Thunder" it was thrilling. You mentioned wanting world music, check out Bloodywood from India. Either "Gaddaar" or "Aaj". We'll save "Dana Dan" for later. Another recommendation is Varijashree Venugopal. She has just put out an album on Snarky Puppy's record label GroundUP Music. Check either the beautiful "Harivaa Jhari" or for more fire "Chasing the Horizon" featuring Hamilton de Holanda and Victor Wooten.

Heh, if you think this wakes the blood of your ancestors, wait till you hear their other songs. My personal favourite is "The Great Chinggis Khaan", but honestly, all their songs sound really epic. When the HU tour they do have a full band with a mix of traditional instruments and rock instruments (there's at least a couple full concerts on youtube that are very well recorded, like Hellfest 2023). One thing to keep in mind is that... basically all in the core band are extremely proficient players of traditional Mongolian music. The main singer also plays various kinds of flute and is a teacher in Music courses in the University in the capital, IIRC. The perfect companion to Wolf Totem would be the official video for Yuve Yuve Yu, which is how most people have found them: extremely well produced, and you get to hear the mongolian fiddle player make it "whinny" like a horse which is always fun. The official video to This is Mongol is fun too. And "Bii Biyelgee"... bonus: amazing costumes and many instruments (including flute).

I am soooooooo glad to see you react to The HU Band and your reaction was exactly as I figured it would be and I enjoyed it tremendously. Watching this video really sent me down the rabbit hole of folk metal. My first exposure to folk metal was Wagakki Band, though theirs is more melded with modern musical styles. Though watching videos of Hanfugetsu (the group that preceded WGB, with Suzuhana Yuko on piano and vocals, Ikuburo Kiyoshi on Koto and Kaminaga Daisuke on shakuhachi) are just awe-inspriring. After The HU Band, I chanced upon a Siberian folk metal group called Otyken who were excellent at the beginning but have kind of slipped into a more commercial approach that takes away from the basis of the genre. Then came Ni Ni Music, a lady from Taiwan who is extremely proficient with traditional Chinese instruments and does wonderful covers of Western songs, especially rock and metal and has other practitioners of Chinese traditional instruments collaborate with her. She has also done the most beautiful instrumental cover I've ever heard of Simon and Garfunkel's classic "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". She also builds and creates traditional instruments herself. My next find was and Indian group named Bloodywood, who really are quite exceptional and are more metal than the others. Two other artists who got my attention are Moyun, a Chinese artist who plays the Guhzeng, the progenitor of the Japanese Koto, and does quite a number of one-woman band videos that are just amazing to watch. And last, but not least is Jingxuan, another Chinese Guzheng practitioner who usually does live videos primarily in Europe. She is yet another master of her craft. I think you would enjoy any and all of them. They are quite eclectic. One more thing and I will shut up, lol. Regarding the song Wolf Totem, there is a video of a flash mob dance of over 100 dancers who perform the Biyelgee style of Mongolian folk dance in a main square in Ulan Bataar in Mongolia. I don't really know how to supply the correct KZfaq classifications, but if you put "BIYELGEE FLASH MOB2019 / THE HU - WOLF TOYEM" it will come up. It is literally awe-inspiring. PS: There is also a Moroccan folk metal band but the name doesn't come to mind at the moment.

If you like live perfomances search for Shihi Hutu. Thats one of my favourite songs by them. They are a fantastic live band. They are all studied musicians. Just got the tickets for the next concert in september. I cant wait. Thats the third time I see them live. Since you said you like international music also search for Bloodywood. They are from India. I don't know where to get the vocals without the instruments, but they released and instrumental version of their first album, without the vocals. Still waiting to see that in karaoke!

Way too many stops & comments, imho it would be better to wait till the end, then do some montage with the parts the moved you.

In order to protect my account from copyright strikes, it has to be done this way. Plus, it’s easier to get out my thoughts as soon as they come to me. This is why I post the original video in the description if you want to experience the song without commentary.
