Ngl the more I rewatch La La Land the more mid it feels. To the point that recently it feels more like a parody than an earnest film. The first time I watched it, in theaters when I was 17, it was my movie of the year. The complex reality of adult relationships, old movie references, I ate that shit up. Now at 24 it comes off as overly trite and preachy. Trying too hard to be deeper than it is. It didn't help that I'd always thought the buildup part of the romance was lacking. And they spent 70% of the runtime on it! 😂 Mind you it was the type of movie where they really needed to sell the romance for it to work. If the audience doesn't believe that their love is real, the rest of the movie loses its meaning. The whole movie would be rendered pointless. And the moviemakers knew that, which is why they very deliberately kept the focus on the romantic relationship the ENTIRE TIME and nothing else... Yet I still had no idea why the characters loved each other! So you see why it feels simultaneously overwrought and under-delivered, like a parody of the "romance for romance's sake" trope in Hollywood filmmaking.

41:03 In defense of Shinkai, there was an interview where he said Suzume wasn't originally intended to be a "boy-meets-girl" romance, but his producer told him to make it that way due to audience expectations. It's why Souta is a chair for most of the movie - because Shinkai, in an act of rebellion, wanted to make something else the focal point of the movie. In that sense, the criticism that Shinkai can only make the same movie is kind of ironic

And honestly, with the way it ends, it can be interpreted a multitude of ways, which i think was pretty cool. Like its obvious that they're super important to each other and love each other (platonically, romantically, or in some pther way) but anything more than that isn't defined, and i thought that was kind of nice. Hot take, La La Land didn't work in the way it was intended. The buildup of the romance didn't sell me on why the two loved each other. The conversation about live action vs animated romance turned into a really great example of the differences in preferences that people have for different mediums with Garnt being for animated, Connor being for live action, and Joey being in the middle. A big reason I think that romance was a good angle to approach that conversation from is that it’s a genre where the more obvious strengths of animation don’t really shine and the limitations of live action aren’t really present so it’s more of a level playing field to discuss the fundamental strengths and weaknesses of both sides and what preferences you can have for each.

I just slammed my fist on the table about Nausicaä not having a manga. It has a manga! It was originally a manga! Written and drawn by Miyazaki himself! I was actually disappointed with the movie not being nearly as deep and emotional as the original manga, but it's understandable because the manga is so long he wouldn't have been able to fit it all in the movie. The manga is so good. I'm especially disappointed in Joey for not even knowing about it. :'(

I can’t fault Joey and Garnt for this since they definitely only watched the anime, but it just pissed me off while so I’ll put this here. White Album 2 is considered a masterpiece in the VN world, in both the West and East. The anime only adapted the introductory chapter which is basically just the prologue that sets the story in its tracks. The writing is amazing, and the music is Chef Kiss. The writer of it is the same guy who wrote Saekano. Note, this is about White Album 2, and not 1.

Hold on to your seats... not just the Vinland Saga author was inspired by Wickie the Viking to make Vinland Saga... Oda was ALSO inspired by Wickie the Viking to make One Piece! This fact still blows my mind after years since I never knew that show was so popular in Japan. I saw it as a little kid in German television. It was a dope show for children and for its time. It was made by a Japanese animation studio from which Nippon Animation was later on formed. So it was made by a Japanese animation studio for German speaking television but they obviously also aired it with a Japanese dub in Japan which is why these two probably also saw it back then. Ngl the fact that a childrens cartoon that was produced for the German TV network ZDF and Austrian TV network ORF (state funded TV channels) inspired these goated Japanese authors to make these masterpieces makes me more proud to be German than anything else in this world. And I don't really feel patriotic about anything else. Also massive props to the Swedish author, Runer Jonsson, who wrote the original series of children's books which were then adapted into the German cartoon series produced by the Japanese. Just a really wild collab.

The written scenario by Maruto Fumiaki for the White Album 2 (WA2) two-part visual novel was an absolute masterpiece. People tend to downplay WA2's reputation from only watching its anime adaption, but we should always remember adaptions almost-always lower the quality of any original source that exist out there, especially ones with a lot of dialogue (light novels, visual novel games). But WA2 is definitely one of the best pieces of Japanese romance literature that exists out there due to the mastering of character interaction, dialogue, and inner monologue when it comes to romantic feelings and conflicts of the visual novel game.

Immediately guessed Kevin Penkin's because he's probably the one great Earth Maiden Arjuna stan left on the planet and I respect that dedication immensely; and frankly, as the boys said, even if I weren't familiar with this fact, that nearly every show and film on there has a truly immaculate soundtrack and the one outlier is a very memorable and compelling entry in the animated dumpster fire canon would have tipped me off immediately. Also, conflict of interest or not, Made in Abyss is god-tier and he *should* be proud to have worked on it, let alone to have created one of the most iconic soundtracks in the medium. Extremely based chart. P.S. Shinkai has actually talked in interviews about how the very strange, perfunctory romance plotline in Suzume was a bit of malicious compliance on his part: He had floated a couple of ideas for films without his trademark angsty heterosexual romance plotting, whether devoid of romance entirely or exploring a lesbian relationship, and his producers shot him down under the belief that it wouldn't be marketable, so he decided to turn the male love interest into a literal piece of furniture and sideline him for most of the film.

Seeing Mushi-shi on a list brought me so much joy.

Mushishi is such an excellent introspective show that really makes you think about the episodes long after you have watched them. The mangaka of mushishi also had a new manga, “When a cat faces west” which is similar to mushishi but in modern day setting.

Casshern Sins is what you combine when you have a badass cyborg shonen protagonist inside a tragic post-apocalyptic show. dealing with the concepts of existentialism and mortality. In a world where both robots and humans didn't use to age, but now can both age and rust and die, due to the apocalyptic landscape. Remember I got emotional in a scene were a robot screams in anguish while mourning at the gravestone of a dead child he used to take care of.

I get what Garnt means how seeing 'real actors' can stop his immersion in a romance story. idk if he just didn't word it well, or maybe I'm taking it differently. But sometimes you see a famous actor/actress in a film or TV show and you only think of the actor/actress as themself and not as a 'stranger' whose story you're immersed in.

What if the actors are not popular? Would you be able to immerse yourself then ?

In my opinion as a romance it sucks but it's a pretty entertaining watch.

@@Christopher._M I think it's an excellent romance anime. It doesn't make my heart swoon like Toradora, but it really brings to light the complications of relationships and things you sometimes gotta deal with to make it through them.
