Since theology is the study of the nature of God and religious belief, I do not feel that the lyrics about the number of wise men are "theologically" anything. Possibly inaccurate, sure. There's also a chance that they're exactly correct. And when you use the word "wrong" you leave one thing certain - that there were not three wise men. Is that what you meant? That there were less than *or* more than three but not exactly three? Edited: To be honest, I thought long and hard about how to reply to your comment. Most ways I thought of would have likely made me sound irritated. And I wouldn't have been irritated at you directly. But understand that in my position, I encounter a lot of people that know it all and they just have to share it with the world. I have grown tired of the criticism of lyrics, especially when it doesn't matter or make sense (in most cases I've seen). Take "Jesus Is Coming Soon" for example. Many will argue (and provide very sound scripture) that no one knows when Jesus is coming. That's absolutely correct! But it's also correct that "soon" in relation to eternity, which is God's timeline, could be a second from now or a trillion years from now. I edited this comment because I want you and everyone else out there to know that it's all going to be okay. Unless the lyrics of a song come directly from scripture (and few do), there's almost always going to be some sort of lyrical freedom expressed by the writer. I urge all of you reading this to not get too hung up on it unless it's actually anti-Biblical. Unless the lyrics speak *against* a passage of scripture, I usually let it slide or chose not to listen/sing that song. I don't make it my life mission to point out to everyone that Jesus probably wasn't born on Christmas day. And I hope all of you reading this don't waste your time doing that either. Know why? Because it simply doesn't matter *when* He was born. It matters that He came to die for our sins! I had a conversation with a guy today about the song "Let Us Break Bread Together". He contends that the lyrics "...face to the rising sun" means that it's a song that promotes worshiping the sun. After I provided scriptural evidence (Malachi 4:2) that Jesus is referred to as a sun that is rising, he switched his argument to one of cardinal directions explaining that the song leader (me) faces east where we are and the congregation faces west so the song is "inappropriate".

@@acappellahymns grew up singing alot of these hymns and when i found out later in life some lyrics aren't exactly true in some aspects of the lyrics, I'd like others to know as well. But i am not militant in throwing away these traditional hymns.

@WasLostButNowAmFound - Thanks for replying. I know I provided an earful that you may have not expected. It's just that in many cases such as this one, potentially inaccurate lyrics are called wrong, untrue, or un-Biblical and those descriptions may make some people that don't study and/or understand their Bibles think that they are *anti*-Biblical. So any time we see potential inaccuracies in lyrics, feel free to point them out. But also use more ambiguous verbiage when we don't know how many wise men there were (there may have been exactly three) or when the subject at hand doesn't have any bearing on the meaning of the story. Since song writers use a bit of poetic freedom with lyrics, they often go with what fits best or what's traditionally historical. There is even artwork from the 1st century that depicts exactly three wise men/maji. Maybe that's inaccurate as well. But it's the best we've got *and* the number of wise men does not detract from the meaning or purpose of the story. I can only imagine a pedants version of this song - "An unknown number of wise men came from an unknown distance away..." ( : Doesn't have the same ring to it, huh? Hehe...
