It's been a fun, but different type of homeschool year for us. Each year brings its own set of fun and challenges, but this year is different for several reasons. First, we have a baby that is the sweetest, cutest little addition (and sometimes a cute distraction) to our school. Second, we have been busy living life, making memories, going on field trips and doing different activities. More life experience school, so to speak. So we are not as far along in our curriculum as I originally had planned, but that's totally ok! We've had to scale back a bit on some of our curriculum, and others have been put on the shelf for another year. This was my year of flexibility and flexible we have been! We have added one piece for my oldest daughter and it has been great! I highly recommend it for middle-schoolers and up. We're still navigating the waters of this school year, but I think it will be a memorable one!

I am a high school teacher part-time and I highly recommend the Fallacy Detective paired with The Argument Builder. Both are fantastic and do well together. So fun to learn what you're doing! I homeschool as well.

I would also love to hear more about BJU English and how it’s going- like how easy is it to teach and how long are the lessons, etc.

I would love to see a review on BJU English. Or a video talking about how you do the lessons. I just purchased English 4 for my 5th grader who has been really struggling with writing but I'm overwhelmed by how to go about doing the lessons after using a more "open and go" curriculum in the past. Not seeing many videos on there on it. Thank you!

My 4th grade daughter is just finishing up A Place To Hang The Moon for her assigned reading/literature and she has loved it! Wishes it wouldn’t have to end. I have her read a chapter/day sometimes 2 and orally narrate it to me. So far this year she’s also read Christie’s Old Organ (lamplighter book) and Esperanza Rising. Planning to have her read Where The Mountain Meets The Moon next.

Hi Lauren! So excited to see your updates again. I love your comparison videos, and would like to ask if you could please do a comparison of BJU and Abeka English/ Language since they are so similar! I've already started the year with Abeka English for grade 2, but was thinking of switching to BJU English 3 next year because of their great writing component. I sense that it is more gentle and explained better. 😊

The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White. I absolutely love all things E.B. White. I also enjoy the Treasures from Grandma's Attic series by Arleta Richardson. It is not a classic, but they are real people and more fun than little house on the prairie.

The Betsy-Tacy series is my number one recommendation! It follows Betsy and Tacy from the ages of five until they get married. Also The Treasure Seekers, The Wouldbegoods, and The New Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit.

We are using lightning literature for a good range of literature. We only do the comprehension questions but we do this in conjunction with TGTB (it’s the 20 minutes of reading).

This is to bring awareness on the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit, recommended by Memoria Press: a Catholic Homeschool program. Chapter 7 narrates how the 5 siblings kidnapped their little neighbor. They used dog chains to restrain the little boy. Finally they write a ransom note in the blood of one of the siblings. I wrote to Memoria Press regarding my concerns of such a degree of cruelty and inhumanity! I do not consider this to be funny and should not be a children's learning topic. It is not even adequate for adult entertainment.

My girls have loved 2 different historical fiction series called Can you survive and Girls survive. Our library has them. They are a choose your own adventure type. There's also some science in them like can you survive a blizzard? They also like the Humphrey the hamster series. I think they're appropriate for fourth through seventh grade.

@@thepracticalhomeschooler that's great! My daughter is on the 3rd book of Anne of GG set (Anne of the Island), may I ask how are books 4-8 contentwise, are there more mature content (i.e. kissing)? My daughter is a year younger than your eldest. How did she find the rest of the series? Thank you.

@@thepracticalhomeschooler thank you so much. I really appreciate it. I'll just let her read it all the way, seems like it is safe. Btw, idk if this will be of help, but I just recently finished reading the Young Readers version of Killers of the Flower Moon, Osage Murders & Birth of FBI by David Grann, I thought it was wonderfully written for young audiences. The murders of course were mentioned but not in gory details. Your daughter might enjoy pointing out the flaws of the investigations and the courtroom scene was actually questionable. Thanks again!

I’ve watched your videos. I know you were a big advocate for Abeka with your middle daughter. I believe you used it for your younger daughter for a while and then it got to be a little too overwhelming if I remember correctly. Now that you are using BJU you with her, looking back, what would you recommend to someone starting out with reading with her daughter who is just starting to use Abeka? I’m sure you have pros and cons for both, but I would love to get your insight on that.

I still really like Abeka, but I know it’s not for everyone. Their method is very solid! And we still did use the Abeka readers and special sounds charts with my younger one too. I just didn’t really do the workbooks anymore for her

Would love an Abeka & BJU readers comparison for 2nd grade if possible. Currently, doing TGTB (1st G) but I'm looking ahead/trying to do research now for next year. I noticed Abeka has reading comprehension 2 and I want more readers, richer text if that makes sense. It looks like Abeka may have faith based/character building in their readers? Is that true? Does BJU have that? This is my 2nd year homeschooling and I have 3 littles (6, 4, & 2). I love your honesty and flip throughs. Thanks
