If you watch closely...you'll notice a long, awkward pause when I pull the "Elephants of the Tsunami" book out of the box. I didn't know what all books were in the box and that one took me aback--it's about the 2004 tsunami, the wave that I ran from with my family, the one that destroyed much of my neighborhood and destroyed many coastal communities in SE Asia. So--if I seem a bit shaken after that point, it's because I was--and I fully agree that this video ends a little abruptly/awkwardly--sorry about that! Do check out the Beautiful Feet Books website to see what they offer (affiliate link here: www.bfbooks.com/?tap_a=30494-e48ebf&tap_s=2872628-7aa216 ) .

@@BaileyAcademy I am glad to have gotten that book--I didn't know that a children's book about the event existed, and I will have to pre-read it, but hopefully it will be a good tool to talk about that event with my kids later on. But I had no idea/wasn't expecting to pick up a book on the tsunami, so it shook me. It's not the sort of memory that tends to get brought up all of a sudden. But we will never forget Dec. 26, 2004.

That's so cool you were able to find all the bonus books of part 1! And gosh, that is incredible and heartbreaking that the tsunami is part of your story. It's a very strange feeling to have lived through something that we teach to our kids as an important event in history.

That was a super cool find that I just happened across a mom who was selling her Around the World Part 1 with lots of extra books bundled in. I can tell it would be a lot of work to collect them all--we will get good use out of them! And yes...really when you think about it we've lived through a great deal of history that we'll have to teach our kids about someday. The pandemic and all...the tsunami definitely impacted everyone who ran away and lived to tell the story--and our hearts will always be heavy knowing that so, so many didn't.

I’m super interested in using Beautiful Feet in the next few years as well so I would love any future videos and reviews on it! Thank you for sharing your experience about the tsunami. I am so sorry you and your family went through that. ❤️ Seeing your reaction and now putting a face to that natural disaster really revived compassion for those that were affected that day.

When I watched the video before publishing I realized that (to me anyways) it seemed obvious that I was a little flustered and kind of gave up on the rest of the unboxing. I actually think the book will be a good resource for talking with my kids about it and sharing that part of history with them someday, but it probably would have been better if I hadn't just stumbled across it on camera. My family came out of the whole event completely safe--but so, so many families lost everything and so many lost their lives. It impacted everyone who was there at the time, but I never even thought that there might be kids' books about it by now.

We used this a couple years ago and absolutely loved it! The Anno books were my boys' favorite. Also, if you didn't see on their website, you can download and print all the coloring images that are in the back of the book. In my opinion that is easier than copying from the book.

How do you pack up all your books? I'm getting ready to go back overseas and looking for new ideas on how to pack up books and curriculum for 4 kids. Around the World w picture books looks amazing! The end wasn't awkward at all. You handled it well. I can't imagine going through something like that as a child.

We bring them in our luggage on the airplane (and purposefully pack VERY light in other ways--the boys and I have very minimal clothing for this trip). We just use clothes as packing material, balance out suitcases with a mix of books and lighter stuff to make sure they stay under 50 lbs., and that's what has worked for us! It helps a LOT that with the route we fly...we're allotted 2 50 lb. suitcases per person. I know that a lot of other routes only allow 1 suitcase.

We got Part 1! Teachers copy digitally and sourced the core books second hand on ebay and amazon used (apart from Anno's China which is too hard to find and super expensive so we will make do without it). Really like the look of the teachers guide. 😀

Ever since moving back, even picture books that have the most fleeting resemblance to our own lives can bring me up short (Grandfather's Journey was one. Islandborn was another). I can't imagine just stumbling into one that does talk about specific events experienced, and such an experience. I pray for you and your children as you process lived history within the family. You've mentioned before having family who work in schools. At some future video, could you talk about how homeschoolers can get to know and support local school communities?
@SevenInAll

Yes, books are powerful and when those stories align with emotional memories and experiences in our own lives...there are some picture books that can be very hard to get through without getting choked up (for me, anyways). I haven't had a chance to read through the whole "Elephants of the Tsunami" book yet but I hope that at the time when we use it it'll be a good chance to talk about what it was like for our neighborhood and community when the tsunami came. And I love the idea of chatting about supporting local schools or engaging with them!

I know you aren’t reading them to your sons this year, but is the plan to use this instead of Sonlight level K? Or will it be alongside it? Those books look amazing!
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll Жыл бұрын
I don't plan to use Sonlight Level K, at least not in Kindergarten. My son will be 5 when we start kindergarten...and while he loves stories...I looked at some of those chapter books and the content in Sonlight Level K and decided that I don't think we'd get as much out of it as we would if we did it when he was older. Maybe we'll do Sonlight K in 1st grade...but I'm not 100% set on that. So yes, my plan is to use this course for our "core" literature/geography/etc studies in Kindergarten. I think it's going to be a blast! The course starts in Asia, where we live, and moves on to the rest of the world, which I think is perfect for starting from what they have experienced and moving outwards.

Hello, I was wondering if you guys had ended up using these and what your thoughts are. Your quick thoughts, lol. Do you think this would be good for a 7th grader to do with his younger sibling? We love picture books and I think he would really enjoy all of these but then I don’t want to take up time doing this and have him struggle to do his own work… it’s overwhelming for me to think about. :( Also, I am sorry for what you experienced with the tsunami. :(

I had to buy these early while we were in the US last summer, but we're actually just now starting to use them, I have a recent video sharing how I'm planning: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gbCPa5WCzarTg30.html My teenage sisters (7th and 11th grade) were like, hey, we want to join, too! When they saw all the fun that I was planning with "Around the World with Picture books" so currently the plan is that the teens will be joining us for some of the stories, creating their own country notebooks, watching movies, and probably enjoying some art projects with us. Both of them have their own significant courseload, but we think there will be enough time for them to join us regularly for some geography-themed fun.

Is beautiful feet enough for a gifted 2nd grader? I have the Early American History for (k-3) and he loves the stories but he is also a voracious reader including non fiction too. He is not so keen on the coloring in pictures. Even with the extra links and rabbit trails, I still find myself wanting to add to it whether it is just a regular encyclopedia or combining it with Notgrass maybe? He just loves history so much. Or maybe I should’ve purchased the intermediate pack for higher grade levels? It’s our first year homeschooling and I’ve had a hard time trying to find curriculum. Math and history have been the two I’m not satisfied with yet.
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll Жыл бұрын
That's a good question and I don't think there's a single answer--with gifted kids, I don't always necessarily want to go "higher" but rather to go broader (as in, do what you are all ready doing, add on to the material--that's something OFTEN needed with gifted learners)--when you do up to "higher" levels in history, the material is more mature, complex, and your 2nd grader might very well be very capable of the complex thinking needed to understand it, but at a young age, might not have the emotional maturity needed to empathize with the events or form a heart-perspective understanding. I like to joke that gifted students are "more expensive" to homeschool...because it's very likely that you simply will end up needing to do "more schoolwork" than the average simply to satisfy their interest and desire. Have you looking into Sonlight at all? I find that, level by level, their books are probably a little more challenging than Beautiful Feet. When he's older, I think their literature/history collections for middle and high school are especially excellent for voracious readers who love history. What math are you using and not finding to be very satisfactory?
@ravenbird3014
@ravenbird3014 Жыл бұрын
@@SevenInAll Thank you. You confirmed my feeling about not leveling up due to emotional maturity. I will look into Sonlight. I was using TGTB Simply math 2. It is super easy for him and he seems to prefer working on harder word problems. I was looking at Math Mammoth, Singapore Primary, Math with confidence, and Beast Academy.

I've heard great things about Thistles and Biscuits Country Unit Studies and they have a Dominican Republic unit: www.thistlesandbiscuits.com/product-page/dominican-republic-country-unit Beautiful Feet doesn't include a few countries that I definitely want our family to study (Malaysia and Mexico being two of those) that I will add in my own resources for.

@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll Жыл бұрын
@@CharlotteMasonTT These picture books aren't written at a beginner reader level, so my sons won't be reading them in kindergarten--the program is meant as a read aloud program. Because my sister is in upper elementary and is older than the typical recommended age for this program, she will be able to read them to herself if that's what ends up working out best in the schedule, but it's also possible that my mom may read them with her so that they can discuss them together. Possibly some combination of read aloud/read independently.
Wish I would have found this sooner!! Homeschool game changer!
