On average, women spend nearly an hour a day on their appearance. Meanwhile, men are likely spending that time checking work emails or networking to advance their careers. Women are expected to conform to cultural beauty standards and stereotypes demanding that they wear makeup every day, especially in professional settings. Is that sexist? NBC News Signal host and Left Field contributor Simone Boyce explores the toll beauty takes on our daily lives.

I quit wearing makeup when I graduated from high school many years ago. Fortunately, the hippie movement encouraged it. It occurred to me that at one point in my life a man/huband/lover might have to see me without makeup, and I just felt that it was all a lie about myself and who I really was.

I stopped wearing makeup all together, and guess what? NO BODY NOTICED OR CARED. I'm saving money and my skin is much healthier. Women think society tells us to wear makeup, but people really don't care. You just feel like society is "telling you to wear makeup", but in reality you just feel awkward because you are not doing what everyone else is doing.

NBC Left Field it makes dating harder. I call make-up the ‘steroids of the dating scene’. Women look more intimating. By that i mean any normal girl who knows how to put on makeup very well could be out of the league for the average guy. And it place guys in an uneven playing field. Guys dont have a lot of beauty options compared to women. In effect, only guys who are naturally attractive are likely to date these naturally attractive looking women. I would prefer if women didnt put on makeup but i can understand why they do it.

Word. I hate going in for a kiss and getting a mouthful of god knows what, or worse getting in a fight because I might smudge a layer or something. It's ridiculous. Just put on some moisturizer and lip balm like a normal person and call it good. Makeup doesn't make you look better; it makes you look like you're wearing makeup.

When I was a teenager in Michigan (late 70s-early 80s), an area woman sued her employer because her male superiors gave her a written performance review ordering her to "wear make-up and behave in a more feminine manner." She had a demanding job and was the mother of four children, and retorted that she had more important things on her mind than makeup. Fortunately, times have changed, but the lesson that "your appearance matters" and that letting yourself get frumpy can cost you your livelihood stuck with me. I'm no makeup addict, but I take care of my skin and always wear foundation and a bit of blusher as a bare minimum, and usually lipstick as well.

For pete's sake. Women pay a huge amount of attention to what society tells them. The same society they have a major hand in sculpting. Women are very competitive in attracting and selecting mates, obtaining jobs, and climbing the social ladder - makeup, fashion, and wonderbras assist these goals. If the aim of this video is simply to engage the targeted audience in circular talk that never leads anywhere, it succeeds. It is unfortunate it did not straightforwardly answer the framed question of " whether or not 'having' to wear makeup is sexist" instead of discovering the answer by examining the core reasons as to why some women choose to wear makeup. Which anyone could have done in one sentence.

I don’t think it is sexist. We live in an America where now women have the opportunity to do whatever they would like to do with their lives with nothing like sexist laws stopping them. Wearing makeup is a choice you can make. I choose not to. If you choose to that is fine as well. If you feel that right now you are forced to wear makeup to be successful, you aren’t! You have plenty of opportunity! Get out there and do something great with your life

Everyone is missing the point. The point is recognizing the underlying pressure within our society for women to look a certain way. Has any woman felt completely beautiful while not shaving her body hair and not wearing makeup? It’s uncomfortable for many women because society creates beauty standards and then profits off of their insecurities when they do not reach said standards.The beauty industry consumes time, money and energy. Is it worth it?

I dont rly wear makeup, just light eye makeup and lipstick for special events. In my country (portugal) most women don't wear makeup everyday either, so I've never felt the pressure to conform to that. I moved to the UK for 2 yrs tho and i Definately felt a slight cultural shock over just how important makeup was to women, and how almost every girl over 13 had some on. The way my new friends felt about it, how many items they Needed, and how much time+money they spent on it, is so strange to me. For me, personally, makeup is not like having armour, it (especially anything i consider 'heavy', like Base) just feels uncomfortable, restricting my expressions and forcing me to go check that it's still ok. I support and appreciate the art and effort behind it, but just hope that the expectations for women in other countries change, so that they can Choose to express themselves however they want.

remilia scarlet I can’t disagree but at the same time it’s the same for men, just minus the make up part. Men have to dress up really nice and take care of their hygiene to often get jobs and even in a lot of instances have to cut their own hair and shave. Do I think women should wear make up to get accepted for a particular job? No. I don’t think it’s sexist that wearing make up helps either. Woman usually look nice without makeup. I don’t think men care as much about make up as women think we do. I think it’s more of a thing between women.
@dropmelon
@dropmelon 5 жыл бұрын
@@lejenddairy Yeah, rather than being sexist, it's more like people judging a women's capabilities and professionality on whether or not they're wearing makeup. Though it is more likely to happen between women, it's still troubling if this bias shows up during recruitment and working. That said, having good hygiene is important even outside of work so it should be second nature for people to take care of it and dressing professionally is necessary when working so nothing out of the ordinary there while makeup doesn't contribute to the work unless they're in the beauty industry.

@@christopherlee9026 that's... exactly the question they're asking, and you've answered it without realizing. They didn't ask if a woman was dressing badly or unwashed for an interview, they only mentioned makeup. Why is makeup an essencial part of being professional or well kept? I sure as hell don't wear it at work, and most of my female colleagues don't either. The difference is, in my country, most women don't wear it everyday, it's mostly kept for special occasions, so the expectation, that u clearly have, isn't there. Btw yes, it is a double standard, because men aren't expected to wear makeup, whereas you do expect women to.
@christopherlee9026
@christopherlee9026 5 жыл бұрын
@@LionUniverse14 I didn't say unwashed, and not wearing makeup is exactly equivalent to wearing a plain T-shirt, it's exactly the same. You dress nice or put on makeup because it's showing that you're putting forth the effort to look nice which shows that you're invested in getting the job which is the essence of professionalism aka being invested in and caring about your profession. That's why a low skill job will probably let you wearing a T-shirt or not wearing makeup slide but a high paying, high skilled job probably won't, they demand you be professional because they *need* you to be. And men may not be expected to wear makeup, but they *are* expected to be clean shaven so it's *not* a double standard.

@@christopherlee9026 Well, Excuse me for misquoting you but just because you, in ur cultural context, consider makeup to be essential doesn't make it so. I work at an university, and whether I go downstairs for a coffee or have a meeting with my superiors, makeup isn't considered essential for any of these professional women. I live in Portugal, and here you don't see every woman with makeup, and ive never felt any pressure to wear it, it's a choice. If you go to a wedding or special occasion, sure, almost everyone will have makeup on, but at work, it just doesn't make sense for me and most of my friends and coworkers, and it doesn't make us any less than those who do. I sure wouldn't wear it everyday, but that doesn't mean I dont take care of my looks, dress well, etc. I did feel it was Completely different in the U.K when I lived there, I still resisted because I don't like to wear makeup, and yet I had a well paying job. I get where you're coming from, but it just really depends where you're from, it's not set in stone and it's definately not essential to being a good professional.

There is a huge tax in the US for being a woman. We MUST wear makeup and use anti-aging products on our faces whether we want to or not. It's the only way to get and keep a job! But, it's not just makeup, razors for women cost more than razors for men, shampoo, conditioner, any health and beauty products cost more if they are made for women. I use razors and shaving cream for men because it does the same job for less money! Not just health and beauty though, clothes too. Next time you go shopping, compare the price of a women's pair of jeans to a man's at the same store, same quality, every time the women's will cost more. Plus we have a monthly cost for being a woman, we have to buy our period supplies every month. Even if we could wear men's clothing and use their grooming products, and not wear makeup (which we can't if we want to keep our jobs!), this monthly cost is sill ours no matter what. Most of us in this country pay taxes on our period supplies. If you really take a look around, you can see that there is a COST for being a woman. Add that to the fact that we make less money! Women should be angry about this! But, we just keep quietly paying it every day.

Lips get more red, cheeks are flushed during sexual intercourse. wearing heels accetuates your buttocks and make your pelvic more prominent, its makes you more attractive. with that the word attract. Just becuase this happens men does not have pass to be disrespectful to women who display sexual signals, impulses must be controlled, but women shouldnt be naive enough to deny that those sexual signals arent confusing the men. If you do these things for you and not for anybody else, answer this. how many times you put on make-up, shaved, put on perfume, and put on a nice dress and no one have seen it. if you really doing it for yourself, why do you need an audience everytime you try to feel attractive

Make up to feel powerful around men. What is the nature of this power? Seeming like witchcraft.

This is not feminism this is b******* scapegoating. this harms real women fighting for feminist goals. Well there's a reasonable question if women should be expected to wear makeup blaming it on men is batshit crazy.

The video is actually anti-feminist and a pretty blatant advertisement for that “make-up company” it features. It purports to be a look at make up history, but completely ignores the original feminist anti-make-up push in the 60’s-70’s that actually succeeded for some years before manufacturers caught on and began making makeup that didn’t look like makeup. I think, though, that the key is in the very word. “Make up” also means to invent a lie. Is that why women and transvestites use so much more of it?

@@Emily-fh3xv I don't care who wears makeup or covers their body in tattoos. But I have a very restricted definition of art that doesn't include how I comb my hair, how I pull out my nose hairs, how I shave, etc.
