i started out this hobby complitelly blind and picked an army based only on what i thought was cool, i ended up picking imperial guard the fact that everyone is either immortal, has gundams, is geneticaly engineered super soldiers, has magic, or a weird combination of all of these while they are just ordinery people with subpar weapons and armor but they still fight against all these is amazing to me, anyway to the point your videos have helped me alot both in painting and enjoying the hobby alot, i started alone and slowly some friends joined up, thanks you so much for all the great help/content uncle Atom

I use the black templar contrast on bases for oil slicks etc. They're a lot more useful than just a quick shader as gw sold them as.

For such a simple technique, the end result looks so great. I've given this a go on some of my own Chaos minis since I saw the Nurgle icon thing on Twitch and it has come out well.

You don't even need GW's Contrast Paints for what Atom is describing in this video. For rust, for example, just water down, for example, Vallejo Model Air Orange Rust and stipple that on.

It’s a great way to put a dried blood effect on blades. I use the brown/red contrast paint. Then use the technical blood on the edges.

I am big on the stippling technique for rust effects. Started out using watered down bestial brown, and blazing orange over dark brown/black washed metal, and for more built up heavy corrosion the typhus corrosion technical paint is awesome. After watching your Necron tutorial I decided to pick up some contrast paints, and I am stoked to try them out and to start experimenting with them as more of a technical paint.

so im new to the hobby, got myself some death guard and some paint. i only got six paints to start out with. this is what i did. mixing Lead belcher and bethasar gold give a nice rusted metal look. mixing death guard green and lead belcher, darkens down the green and adds a slight metallic look to the green, nice for a base coat. then dry brushed normal death guard green for a highlighted look, then mix the green with averland sunset to lighten the green and give it a warmer feel, used that for highlighting. mixed averland sunset with rakarth flesh for a nice cream bone colour. for the skin i mixed rakarth flesh with averland sunset only i little dab, to warm it up then mix a dab of screamer pink, to give it a little life, while making it look bruised.

It's funny that you mention this, I've been painting Poxwalkers for a friend between my own modelling projects and I have been using this technique. In one case I toned down a skin tone with a wash that dried pooled. I started to stipple some lighter colours in to provide contrast and to break up the outline of the pooling. I also found Skeleton Horde Contrast works really well over the corrugated metal on the Mega Dread I was painting. I just added a bit of Reikland Fleshshade and Agrax Earthshade in spots and it looked dirty with a hint of rust. I also use the Vallejo Rust and Chipping set and it works well for this stippling technique too.

This is so far up my street, it's already gone past my house and now I'm having to chase up the hill after it. Like the beaten-up, worn down & corroded look, but not got any Contrast Paints as yet.

This sounds great for some orcs and salvaged equipment for Necromunda and misc. bandits etc. Thanx for another awesome and informative video. The Fez-free look is pretty cool too. Or at least equally cool.

Stippling green and purple contrast paints works great for zombie flesh. Also stippling can give a fuzzy texture to fabrics. I've stippled a beret and baguette on a mini before to give those that rough, uneven texture even though the texture of the mini is still smooth.

Love fing this on my necron and death guard. Especially the indominus necron models have this pre-sculpted battle damage you can highlight really well. I love using this technique with typhus corrosion

I'm a big fan of 1:1 Terradon Turquoise/Contrast Medium as a power-sword colour, pushing it into the alternating pattern you usually see on power-swords.

Your vid comes at the perfect time for me! Currently trying to figure out the paint scheme for weathered black Deathwatch armour. While I knew I wanted to stipple on desatured blueish highlights, I hadn't yet decided on a plan for the shadows. I'll give your contrast stippling a try using Black Templar to smooth the blends. Copper & Bronze patina is a form of corrosion that wouldn’t look out of place on more “good guy” units. It’s a form of oxidation/rust but doesn’t negatively affect the underlying metal in any significant way and forms a weatherproof barrier, so bronze-age armies generally wouldn’t bother to scour it off, except along the sharped edge of the blade (which is already done as part of the sharpening process anyway). It would also generally rub off where bronze plates rubbed against each other regularly, such as the upper part of each scale in scale armor or the overlapping parts of larger plate protection, which could add a bit of mechanical storytelling.

Painting Dust figures right now, they gotta be dirty and grungy. Thanks for another technique!

For stippling I cut down an old small brush to about 1/8 inch so the bristles are fairly stiff but spaced. Doing single points would drive me insane.

Could you get the same effect by over thinning regular paint as long as it is still thicker than a wash?

I'm here from the Sunday Show pachow earlier today. I've used thinned oil paints in this way, and it worked really well. Oils suit the slower nature of the process. I suppose you could also use inks, if you don't have Contrast paints handy?

Also thinned down inks could also work as well.

I've been doing similar with washes on the new necrons to give an aged and grimy look and it didn't even occur to me to try contrast paints. I'll try that out on the new flayed ones flesh when they release. Thanks

Midwinter Minis had a cool thing where he thinned the GW gold to the point where it separated for a rust color and it looked pretty dang good

Uncle Adam, I do not have any GW contrast paints, yet. Can this technique be done using regular opaque acrylic paints, if you thin with matte medium and flow improver? I am going to experiment, just checking to see if you have already experimented with other paints. My goal is adding grunge to armor, weapons, cloaks and boots to show a bit of battle grime.

Which contrast paints are best for this?

So im trying to do a dirty(more dull and almost slightly charcoal black) realism on top of my blood angels based off of the warhammer tv show Angels of Death. I finally perfected all the custom paintwork, kitbashing paitining and the transfers and varnish are on. This took me months.. Now to weathering.. Im scared to death to ruin it as these are my first 10 guys and im a beginner. The varnish was satin so a bit too shiny perhaps but anyways i want to try to dull it down in places and im thinking possibly black pastels or charcoal mixed with airbrush thinner or matt medium and maybe darker contrast paint? I also want to weather the stickers a bit. I like realism, grimdark is going too far for me.. But i do want some grunge on top of my pretty blood angels. Any ideas or videos to watch? Thanks for the video you always come up with new ideas. I also like to come up with new ideas and have tried a bunch of new things ive never seen done. So i appreciate videos that think outside the box. I like to use contrast paint to shade edges it works well especially going for not losing the bright red of blood angels. My main color was evil sunz scarlet and shadowed with flesh tearers red contrast.
