Way too much seasoning for my taste. Just coarse salt and crack black pepper on a good cut of steak.

Garlic salt? Onion salt? Nobody uses that much salt on anything. Surprised you could even eat those steaks. Garlic powder, onion powder, dooode.

This is a great accessory for the Weber. I don't use it because I got the Craycort cast iron grates, but if you do not want to go that route, this is definitely a good buy.

Baum Grillin'z yeah that is a great feature. But I know the Craycort system has a few accessories like the griddle and cast iron pan. It's pretty versatile and should last forever if you take care of it, which is pretty easy.

I would never add sooo much seasoning to a great steak. A little salt and pepper. However I understand some people like to eat barbequed spices, I prefer the taste of the meat. Now if'n the meat had spoiled, then I could understand the heavy spicing.

Dude I love you but, not enough charcoal, you did not oil the sear grate prior to heating up, way too much seasoning, what are you thinking? LOL. Salt and pepper maybe a hint of granulated garlic if you want... but just a touch. And then to top it all off medium to medium well? The Death Knell of a good Steak. Steak is definitely not your game. To each his own but ya killed it. Never cover it for the first side sear, flip it over cover it for maybe a minute and then uncover again. btw The comments that said you put the grate upside down are not true, you can put it either way it doesn’t matter. If you’re using a vortex it’s better to put it sitting up, that way you don’t get any of the mess on the wire grate next to you to that’s clean. Also it looks much cooler that way. So the grate can go either way you want, no difference. But please just Olive oil, salt and pepper and nothing above medium rare.....ever. This is not a brisket or ribs, the cow gods are watching.
@BaumGrillinzBBQ
@BaumGrillinzBBQ 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the great tips. I may have gone overkill with the seasoning.. but I did enjoy it. I have learned a lot since this video. Never have used the vortex before I’ll need to look into it. Go check out my latest video you might enjoy that one better, well maybe.... lol

I see the searing grate can be put in two positions. On about a 1/4 in higher than the surround grate and the other position flat and even with the surrounding grate. I think the higher setting is for indirect cooking? This way nothing goes past towards the searing grate when you are indirectly cooking? Not sure if that is the reason for both heights, but it would make sense?

Decent looking steaks but lets be honest here: this insert is just a gimmick for producing steakhouse style sear marks, which actually isn't what you want when you're cooking a steak. What you're getting is a crosshatch pattern on the surface of the steak where the Maillard reaction has occurred, while the rest of the surface of the steak has no sear on it. This makes for a steak that does not have a uniform crust or texture and will be lacking in flavor compared to a steak that is seared properly over the entire surface of the meat by simply allowing the fire to do its work. That's not to say that you can't sear a steak properly on this insert, but if you do it right, you'll never see the grill marks because the entire steak will be one giant grill mark. The fire should be doing the work, not the grate. Unfortunately i can't post a photo here to show you what I'm talking about.

I agree completely!! Well said 👍
@benb6274
@benb6274 3 жыл бұрын
@@BaumGrillinzBBQ ideally you'd do a dry brine overnight followed by a reverse sear to turn the outside of that steak into a crusty diamond of beef goodness. Grill marks just make people who don't know any better think they're eating the best they can get when they've never actually had a proper steak.
@crBudgetWatches
@crBudgetWatches 2 жыл бұрын
I agree it’s a gimmick but sometimes I like variety , sear marks , reverse sear on grates or sear on cast iron pan with butter and rosemary.
@benb6274
@benb6274 2 жыл бұрын
@@crBudgetWatches yeah they say you eat first with your eyes but again, a steak with pretty grill marks without a proper sear is basically just applebees on your grill lol. Cast iron on the grill is the way to go hands down. Charcoal flavor, french technique, win win. Add some garlic to that recipe and use kerrygold butter (unsalted of course) and finish with fleur de sel for an epic twist on a classic ribeye.
