Recently added to the X1D II and 907x cameras via firmware update 1.2.0 (the latest firmware is now 1.3.0), Focus Bracketing allows the camera to automatically capture a pre-set number of images, shifting the focus between each capture, helping to achieve a larger depth-of-field by then stacking the resulting images with different focus positions together in post-production.
This live webinar provided an introduction to Focus Bracketing, why and how to use it, including a pre-recorded demo shoot and software tutorials for how to process the images via Adobe Photoshop and Helicon Focus, with time at the end of the webinar for questions.

Great information. I hv been using the 500C for over 30 years. Camera n lens are intact. Faithfully produced memorable pictures of all wonderful moments of past hanging on the wall. Longing for shipment on the new 907X 50C combo which would help me to enhance my horizon in another plateau of my love of photography sharing my retirement days.

Thank you for making a complete video ! I had some issues during the live webinar. This made it all clear. Now I can run some real tests that makes sense after doing some initial testing when the focus bracketing feature was first released.

I would love to see an option where the camera calculates how many images you need automatically. Although not easy this should all be calculatable. You know your lenses and if the user may give the camera an A and B focus point this sounds doable. What are your thoughts on this? Especially considering that the step size is dynamic an automatic calculation would make this process much easier and takes out the guess work. Any way great webinar. Thanks for sharing it!

The difference seems to be seen in the light rendering the high whites are quite a bit softer from Helicon Focus and its quite easy to see ;) but Photoshop is possibly the more convenient way to do cause its one line of a workflow instead of using multiple tools… so the interesting questions would be a comparison of processing time and power… so if Helicon or Photoshop are needing more or less system resources. But over all, a great academy job here! Thank you a lot.

Great web. I now know where I when wrong. I tried it over about 10 images and did not see it working. But now I know it should of been 35 images. So thanks Mark and Colin. Sorry I did not see the survey at the end.

Hi John. 10 images could still work, depending on your subject, and 35 images could still be enough, or not enough... it will differ depending on your shoot conditions.

Hello, thanks for this tutorial. To be sure, you use manual focus on first frame right ?

It would be great if stacking could be done in Phocus itself.

Are you confident that f/11 is the "sweet spot" on all XCD lenses? Even the zoom? I haven't tested them myself, but I had that sense.

Now add frame averaging and Exposure+ like in the Phase One :)

wow that is a lot of images! I would never auto blend layers in PS.. it simply doesnt work 9/10 times. Its better to just align the layers and do the blend yourself. Longer time needed. If you use the right lens, you shouldnt need to stack, unless you are simply trying to do something that is against the laws of physics with the lenses you have, which is what most people do which is why focus stacking is needed. This is why i loved large format for years, so you can adjust the plane of focus. MF tilt shift lenses are ridiculous prices, heavy and just are practical or cost effective for most people.

Since this video was made, Adobe Photoshop 2021 now produces a "RAW" file after focus stacking. This allows the use of Filter->Adobe Camera Raw Filter for basic adjustments before saving. There is no option to save the "RAW" file as I understand the process. I do wish there was a little more technical information re: the number of steps to use 30, 60, 100; the number of steps to use to cover a given depth where sharpness was desired; or a way to set the beginning focus plane and the final focus plane and then have a calculation of the number of images required given the focus distance, lens focal length, and relative step size. It seems that Hasselblad, with its bright engineers could cobble together a small subroutine in the focus stacking subroutine to do this for use so we would have a starting point.

Why does this not work with Phocus? It makes your work flow very slow then shooting high volume in the studio. Please help

Why are H owners forsaken? You suggested f/11 for sweet spot aperture, and your demo video choses f/7. Also, wouldn't that be already close to the diffraction limit of the 50 Mp 's smallish 44x33 sensor? When using HTS, we can manually move the camera on a precision rail to do stacking, which is what you have left H users with. Why doesnt the camera automatically batch the stack? Fuji, Phase One, as well as Panasonic (FF or MFT) do. Will a fully automated calculation of step size, number of steps, based on lens selected and aperture be provided in a future update? Phase One and Fujifilm already do.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. The reasons why Focus Bracketing is not yet available on the H platform is covered in the webinar, as too is why we chose not to automatically stack in camera, and we shot at ƒ6.3 for the demo to help exaggerate the shallow depth of field. We can't comment on future updates, but rest assured, we always look to provide the best possible solutions and will implement them where possible.

I have read the replies below - I use an H6D100c shooting automobiles in UK with Broncolor 1200L's - and occasionally stitch up to 9 pics - big files notwithstanding I have no real use for focus stack but I do think that the H system is not really in that much of a development phase currently.I love the idea of a 907x system - but the lack of flash capability sadly lets it down -there is literally nowhere to put a trigger - and lets be honest its landscape mode only - Phase One have built in a Profoto trigger and considering Hasselblads' long association with Bron that would be a welcome and simple fix - we only need RFS2.2 due to the leaf shutters.

as Phase One been brought up. XF provides an automatic facility where you choose near and far points, and the camera calculates the no of steps and step size based on lens selected and aperture and suggests that. You can OK that or choose to over ride by manually tweaking , for eg, the camera uses a very small CoC in its calculations, resulting in a very large number of frames for the output I need. But I can change the no of frames, and it recalculates the step size. This is a very useful feature.

WHY can't the near and far focus point be selected and the camera work out how many shots to take for a user defined step size. This is what other brands do -- the give it a try is frankly crap.
