I'm a full-time professional Webtoon and Comic creator and I'll be reviewing viewer submitted comics and Webtoon Canvas. I will look at art, storytelling, lettering, etc. This is to try to help you learn how to get better at comics by giving an honest critique.

This video critique was requested by the creator. I don't offer unsolicited advice because I don't believe it is appropriate to force your opinions on someone you don't know, even if you have good intentions. Imagine walking up to a stranger on the street and saying "yellow's not your color."
I'm not going to focus much on anatomy and other aspects of drawing that simply require practice and time to learn. Saying "Draw better biceps" isn't super helpful. All artists are always and forever trying to draw better biceps.

Anyways, thanks so much again for critiquing my work! I responded a lot but that’s what happens when I do my own analyses haha (I’d do a video reaction too if I wasn’t so shy 😄) I’m definitely thinking deeply about your points and what I can and can’t change, it’s a lot to unpack, but I took down a ton of notes that I’m hoping will help me improve a lot! 😊😊😊 Also, if you’re reading my comments, go check out Walter’s comics! They’re quite fun and have neat character designs, and really interesting plots! ^_^ His works really make his technique explanations solid, great examples of how to make comics!!

Hey Walter! Thank you so much for doing this critique! I finally got the time to watch your video since I first heard you made it from one of my artist pals! I wanted to sit down and thoroughly consider what your thoughts were, so I needed to find a good time that I could :D Thoughts on the video- - lol yeah the foreign names/words can be tricky to pronounce, no worries on that XD Honestly, I have trouble with my own characters’ names sometimes haha, but they’re real names/words that I researched! It’s a fun little bilingual bonus for people who can speak the language ;3 (also as a polyglot, I just like using foreign words whenever I can 😂) Good attempts on them in the vid, though! (Hint: they’re Korean names, and Google brings up much better pronunciation tips than I can explain lol!) - Yeah I’ll edit my summary - I’d hoped to keep weekly updates when I first started, I did well back then coz I had more free time, but once school started, I slipped really bad… XD I should’ve started with a buffer, in retrospect 🤔 - I agree on your summary analysis, I’m partly developing my story as I go so my initial summary was vague since I didn’t know what to expect either… not the best way to start ahah. I like what you suggested, I’ll use some of it for the rewrite! :D (I wanna add, it’s really helpful to hear an analysis from someone who has no idea of the whole story, coz that helps me to see if my presentation is matching my intention. I know too much as the creator, so it’s nice to hear from an outside POV if I’m heading in a good direction haha) …..

- I’m glad my character relationships are reading well (thank you~! :3) Character development is one of my favorite things about storytelling! - I’m considering redoing the first few episodes at some point, so I’m gonna see if I can incorporate a “why” better! (But lol yeah, I like gradual world-building, twists and turns, slow burn relationships, that stuff instead of info dumping, but I might be a bit too slow paced sometimes XD) - The episode labels bit looks really useful! I’ll need to keep that in mind while organizing the rest of my story :D (also yay, I’m happy my hook was clear! 😄) - I very much agree and emphasize the “show, don’t tell” aspect of comics too XD It’s so tricky tho, to figure out just how much to reveal at a time so the audience feels what I want them to at the right points.. I actually ask myself that question of “why this episode” every time 😂 I often review my script several times before drawing to see if I can cut out unnecessary stuff. Actually, I’m wondering if I switched the genres around, would it be more understandable/fitting? I think romance is often more character driven than action scenes, but fantasy is broad and maybe considered more fast paced… Do you think that might make any difference in how readers perceive my story? (Slice of life might be a bit too slow for this story imo ahah..) - That “list”, I do have! I have a continuous outline and review it every time I write new scripts to make sure I’m hitting what I need :D It’s super useful! …….

- Lollll me called out, yeah Haneul’s really fun to work with XD but in honesty, I have a ton of characters I wanna show off, and their purpose in this story isn’t always the most important. I’m trying to find ways to express each of their individuality without straying so far from the main characters and plot… Jiyeon’s one of the main ones in this story, but right now, she’s kinda just… unable to take it all seriously, so she doesn’t have much to react strongly to yet 😂😅 I hope showing her major reaction to it later is impactful, but my pacing right now is still kinda slow ^^ - Classic “tall dark handsome, and mysterious” indeed, you hit exactly what I was going for with Cheol 😂 I know a group of audiences who just like seeing those kinds of characters on screen 😂 but it’s a “mask” kinda 🤔 gradual character explained… (LOL yeah he’s not my type to like at first either, Haneul’s just very persistent XD) - There are actually 4 main characters, and their roles will be gradually shown - I just haven’t gotten far enough to do so yet lol - Oof yeah character consistency is tricky too… so many traits within one character that at any point, they might not have the most important concern in mind(?) idk, I kinda think of it as in real life, people aren’t always so set on the same concern every point in their lives, like they might just get a craving or sudden desire for something selfish and forget what they actually need haha. Still, I agree, consistency is big 👍 I think there’s a lot of side plots that make it more tricky… - Some points you made I do think is my slip up as the all-knowing creator haha… gotta be more careful with that (btw, cute doodles there 😂) ………

- I… kinda predicted that comment about my thumbnail 😂😂 Well, I’m excited to change it to work with Webtoon’s new dimensions so yay I can fix it there! :) And thank you!! Yeah I really should translate more of the Korean to clarify what’s happening 😅😅 (I thought it was a fun bonus and non important background event to just leave as is, but I guess there are some stuff that should be more clear lol) - Backgrounds are a longggg time learning topic haha.. ahh……. I’m working on it XD - Yeahhh I’m currently on hiatus to make a buffer so I’m hoping to improve with all the things you mentioned! - I’m using Magic Poser to save time 🙃 I’m actually varying between photos and the app, but most of the time I need the app since I don’t have space or time to pose a real thing haha. I used to work from just imagination and some photos in my earlier episodes (hence the style shift) but it was tricky. Working towards someday not needing the app at all though! - Oh yeah, I like that idea of making my backgrounds dimmer/more blended, gotta remember to do so more often! - So the way I make balloons is with a special “word bubble” brush from Medibang Paint XD it naturally has wavering, and I can’t get rid of it - that’s the smoothest line setting, but I guess it gives a bit of of “hand drawn” feel? Also yeah, trying to figure out positions so the balloons flow nicely is another tricky thing I’m working on xp - Finally, this webtoon is actually meant to be a (kinda long) side story to my main comic (that I will eventually make for print!) So once the stories are all caught up, I’m hoping that my fantasy concepts will be explained well enough between all my works, coz it’s an idea I really hold dear ^^ (it’s just really complex to explain in short haha.. 😅)

Exactly. We only get the first two episodes to make a point before the sub prompt pops up on the third one ^^; I found one way to work around this is having my first 2 eps as long as need be to get to the hook & inciting incident, and the rest of the story is back to smaller uploads.

I always listen to this! Thank you so much for reading others comics, most of the authors dont. Also what is a hook?
@doidadosgato
@doidadosgato 3 жыл бұрын
A hook is the main reason why someone is reading. I see it as "the big question" that the story is trying to answer. It's very subjective tho, especially because people may have different reasons for reading the same thing.
@Nikke283
@Nikke283 3 жыл бұрын
As Pretty Belle said, people have different reasons to read a story but the "hook" is the reason why you literally want to see the next episode/ or season in a tv show or buying the next Comic. It is a cliff- hanger. ( a literally or more subtile)
@ocianikz9544
@ocianikz9544 3 жыл бұрын
(Definition) A hook is a statement, question to the reader, or action used in the very beginning of a story by the character to keep viewers reading. Think if it like a fishing hook, you cast it at the start and once the fish grabs on it can't let go unless you messed up. (Example) Let's say your story is scifi, fantasy, or action genre and your story takes place on another world. A question is usually the best hook. Here's a good one (I just made this up so if anyone wants to take this idea go ahead) (Hook) "Have you ever wondered what a world where science has become advanced enough to cure humanities aging process would look like or a world where magic has suddenly become reality? Well let me tell ya, it's not fun. Do to over population, magic is used to take lives away rather than stopping science from making more of that immortality cure. My name's (character name) and I'm here to stop it all one way or another." If that hook makes you want to read the story, then it worked successfully.

Hi! I have a question, what is the process of featured creators go through right after they got the offer of getting featured until the launch... I've seen your other vids but I don't think there was one that you talked about this. This has been bugging me for awhile hehe. I LOVE YOUR VIDS! This critique videos are the best.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
It's basically just working out the contract, signing the contract, and then just making the comic, writing, drawing, edits, etc until you have enough episodes to launch. like 10-15 episodes.

I don`t know if it helps but having 3 main Chars to act together can be very interesting since it is in real life often kinda...tricky. If I would write such a story, I would have a general(classic) Storyline in the backround + I would think about the agendas of my three people general. Are they the same as the main Char? Once you know a lot of all of them you can put them into a setup and you know how they would react on this Situation and how they work together/ against each other. Once you reach this ,it writes by itself. I have the feeling Walter do this with his Ghostbats kinda, just with a few more Chars.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
Great idea. Usually I come up with characters that I think our interesting and for groups like Ghost Bats, I make sure each character has their own "thing". That way, no what situation I have to write, I know one of them will be able to make a situation more fun ;-)

Hi! “Like a SkyBird” creator here! I actually have 4 main characters for this story ;) but each character (even side characters) has their time and place to be introduced. I think my pacing technique makes my story a bit trickier to organize (ahah), but yeah I agree! All my main characters have a purpose, and once they all fully meet each other, they’ll be able to interact and bounce off each other much more, for better or worse 😂 they just… haven’t met properly yet lol!
