Just a heads up if you're not very familiar with digital art and you wanna upload a webtoon, you should always save a copy of your work as a jpeg when you're done and keep the original layered file so you can go back and edit it or do whatever the heck you want with it. Great video as always Walter!

I have a question: Is there a way that I can upload a page of my series in landscape orientation? That might seem like an odd question but the way I do it is by drawing each page by hand on an 8½x11" sheet of paper then scanning it onto my computer for a couple further steps before I upload it. I just need to know if I can do pages in landscape for a "big reveal" moment before I draw it

I think you mean JPG. JPG is a computer file type for images. You'll need an art program to draw your Webtoon comic images. A good free computer program is called Medibang. For a phone, there is Ibis Paint. Once you draw your image, comic, or thumbnail you export it as a JPG file. Then you can upload that to Webtoon. I created a bunch of videos that explain the entire process from writing to drawing to uploading. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abWdptKVz9DaooU.html

Thank you for your advice. You've made this process so much easier for me. I do have a question: I tried uploading my webtoon by Making several 800 x 1280 files, converting them to JPG and then publishing them together on WEBTOON, but when I publish them, they don't look like they're in scroll format. You can see the dividing line which clearly shows the division of files. It doesn't look like it's all in one vertical scroll format like most webtoons do - if that makes sense. I think I'm going to try the other method you'd mentioned (which involves using Croppy). But thank you!

Thank you so much for this video! I have a question about entering the competition, do you think popular Canvas creators should enter the competition? I think it's okay since 70% is given by the judges I think
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Engagement is only 30% of the score and Webtoon makes it sound like engagement isn't just a numbers game, it's weighted. So even if a creator is already popular, that doesn't make their story good. Which, like Maiwnad, is 70% of the score. So having a million readers won't really help you win. Don't worry about the numbers, they don't always mean what we think they mean. Just focus on your comic and engaging with your own audience, no matter the size.

@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried drawing much in procreate, it's a cool program though. It may be blurry because of the brush that you are using. You may need one with a finer, sharper tip. I just tried using my procreate and used an inking brush and it looked fine and sharp. I used technical pen. Try a different brush and let me know if that helped.
@katherine8215
@katherine8215 4 жыл бұрын
Walter Ostlie Thanks so much for replying! I tried using that brush, and it only looks sharp and clean when the pixel count is a lot higher than webtoons requirement of 800x1280. Do you think I would be better off using Photoshop instead?
@musclehead2680
@musclehead2680 4 жыл бұрын
i'm using paint tools sai it just kept bothering me that when i zoomed in a little it would be pixelated because when i read webtoons i zoom in sometimes and the quality doesn't lower as much as mine so i was afraid that when someone reads mine and they zoom in it would be too pixelated or is it only important that it looks good at a 100%? again thank you
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 жыл бұрын
It may depend on the brush you are using or possible how paint tool sai works. I drew this comic at 900px, so you can check the quality of the lines if you want. However, all files are being shrunk down to 800px, so the pixel quality ends up being the same even if you draw at 3000px. The easiest thing to do is draw a bunch of lines using your different brushes on an 800px canvas, create a fake webtoon comic and upload it. You can see what it looks like for real. Then do a 3300px canvas, down-res to 800px and upload it. Does it look any better? Should be a quick test to see what works best for your setup. But yea, if drawing at 3000px+ feels better for you, there's no reason not to draw that large if that's what works for you.

Why do you put the panels into small chunks of panels before putting them into the final 30k*ish px final product? couldn't you go panel strait to the final or even draw the panel itself on the final? 2. I think I saw some people drawing at 1600px width then shrinking it after to 800. is there a reason you don't do this or you don't think it's needed and you can draw easy enough on 800?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
1. It's really hard to scroll around on a 30,000px tall file. Some of my files are in the 70,000 range. 2. The size of the canvas will depend your personal style and how much you want to be able to noodle in tiny details. 800 is the minimum for sure. maximum is whatever your computer/software can handle. Also if you plan to print your comic, then you will need to think about the print size. Every 300px is about 1 inch of high-quality print resolution.

@walterostlie

You should use 800px wide at the very minimum. Never do less than 800px wide. Now the height can very. The file you upload to webtoon has to be 1280px or less in height. so 800px x 200px is fine, 800px x 1000px is fine. However, you entire episode can be more than 1280px tall. So you could make your comic episode 800px x 30000px. But you'd have to use croppy to split it into 800px x 1280px files. You could also make you comic 3300px wide and then croppy will shrink it down to 800px wide for you. watch this video for croppy information kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bst9dbqH192ooZs.html

@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 жыл бұрын
Webtoon allows you to upload 800px wide by 1280px tall files. So at the very least, you want your canvas to be at least 800px wide. Since webtoon is vertical scroll, the height of the file doesn't really mean anything, it could go up to 80,000px. So 800px wide is the miniumum. Now if you go larger than 800, you can get some finer line detail, how much larger will depend on your still, if you do a lot of detail, you'll have to have a bigger canvas so you can do fine lines. If your art is very simple, than 800 may be enough. The other thing is printing, do you want to print it? If so than you may need higher resolution. It's a lot of information ;-) I think the safest best is to do around 2100 pixel wide. DPI doesn't really mean anything when you are doing digital art. But just for fun, set it to 300dpi, it will tell your printer some information. hope that helps.

Super helpful as usual One question though..when you first draw your panels, do u use the same pixels required by webtoon, like you know u want a smaller panel, like 500×300 px..so u draw with this px or you use higher pixels and then import your photo into the required 800×30000 panel u use? I Don't know if you got my idea..but I i want to draw the panels separately then import them into a long 800× whatever the length of the episode would be..so do I use higher pixels then adjust them later to fit my long panel so that the resolution is better or do I just start with the required px?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 жыл бұрын
Totally get what you're saying. I used to draw my webtoon in 5 seperate files. Each like 3300px by 30000px. I would fit as many panels in there as I could. Usually like 6 or 7 panels with room for gutters and lettering. I'd then shrink each of those files to 800px wide and copy them into a single file that was 800px by 30-60,000px tall. However, now I am just drawing it at 800px wide to start with. 800 pixels is still almost 3 inches of print resolution, pretty good for a single panel. 3300px is 11inches of print resolution, which is crazy for a single panel. It just depends on your plans for the artwork. I detailed my new method, you can see it in this playlist. Look at the PANEL and LAYOUT videos for the information you want. Also in this video here, I do a super quick overview of my process now kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9h0gKuk2dG1YKc.html This is my older method using 3300px wide art kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZmiial4lp_JZIk.html Let me know if that helps.

If you look at the Original series on Webtoon as pros, they are doing an episode every week. Which is around 40-60 panels. Some get up to the 100s, but lets not worry about them. So you'd have to be able to do 40-60 panels a week. They also have buffers which means they have 10 episodes completely done before they even post the first episode. This gives them a little wiggle room, then they take a little break between story arcs/chapters.

@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It just seems simpler to keep it all in the same file. In my old version I was also making the files huge 3300px, I think that was overkill. So I've shrunk my files down, and stuck them all together. It's going to depend on how much your computer can handle processing wise. If the computer is older, you may need to split files apart if you notice the machine running slow. I am still trying to figure out the perfect file sizes for my art style. More complex, highly detailed art will need bigger files, my art's more on the cartoony size, so I don't need as much. Prolly 900px to 2000px.

I've been thinking a lot about this, and I don't know if I have a good answer. There are pros and cons for both methods. I talked with someone else who posted all 3 episodes at once and they weren't super happy with the results. They are doing a second comic and are planning on Posting 1 at a time. However, with so many comics being posted, it seems like it would be good to have all of them posted so people will read all three and not just forget about you a week later. I think most Webtoon readers expect a weekly schedule, so it may be smart just to stick with that method. However most webtoons also launch with 3 episodes to start with. I was thinking if you have a total of 3-4 episodes, maybe post 2 to start. If you have five, post 3 episodes to start. Kind of a toss up.

What program are you using to draw? It shouldn't look like crap if you draw on 800x1280, just don't zoom in over 100%. You'll be drawing at the same view quality as the reader. Now if you want to be able to draw finer details, then you will need to draw on a fairly large canvas like 3200px. Watch these videos, it may help kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mq-nYNaGxtidfJ8.html

What DPI do you recommend?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
For webtoon and digital art, dpi is meaningless. What's important is your canvas size. For webtoon it has to be at least 800px wide. that's the minimum. So you can go much larger than that. every 300px wide gives you 1inch of high-res printing quality if you ever decide to print your comic. So 800px is almost 3 inches. Not very large. So if you make you canvas size 1200px, you get 4 inches. 1500px 5 inches,etc. I work at 1900px wide. For height it doesn't make, just how much you need for your story. 1px to 200,000px. There is a size restriction on webtoon for uploads, but just generally, whatever. you'd have to draw pretty long episodes.

What program are you using? If it's ClipStudio, it may be one of two things. First, you're not selecting all the layers you want to copy by holding shift and clicking each layer you want to copy. The other thing is it may be pasting the image off the canvas. Zoom out pretty far and then hit ctrl-t to transform, if you see the transform box appear off canvas then just move it onto the canvas. If it's photoshop it may be that same problem with pasting off of the canvas. The other possible problems is that the the file sizes are different and you didn't resize the original image, so it's really small or really large.

Lots of answers for this questions. The bare minimun is 800px, because that is how webtoon will display it. So never go lower than than. Every 300px of resolution is equal to 1inch of hi-res print quality. So it depends on what else you want to do with your comic. Now most traditional print comics are done on canvas sizes of 3300px x 5100px. This is 11 inches x 17 inches of hi-res print quality. I can't really imagine why you'd need to go above 3300px wide for a single webtoon panel. 2100px is most likely more than enough for a single panel. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mq-nYNaGxtidfJ8.html
