One thing I like to do before thumbnailing is do a bunch of random shapes and smears with grey markers in a bunch of boxes, then go in with a black pen and see if I can find some interesting compositions in there that I can use when I start becoming repetitive in my layouts. In the end, composition really is how you story-tell. Every different shape, size and placement tells a different story. Like, when a character is placed higher in a scene because of the camera angle, they will be dominant over any other character. But that effect deminishes again when you make them smaller than the other characters because you place them further away from the camera. I highly recommend that, when you’ve started making comics and you’re ready to dive into composition more, to pick up the book “Framed Ink” by Marcos Mateu-Mestre because he goes over a lot of that stuff. And look up some more composition tutorials, since it’s sometimes hard to find people who actually explain *why* certain things work the way they do. They’ll just give you certain “rules” but these rules can be broken as well. :) I love thumbnailing, it’s my favourite part of the process. Thanks for sharing this video Walter! And good tip about the study of film and comic shots as well, I love how simple you made the studies!

It's tough to remember everything, there's so much. Messing up, being reminded, eventually it starts becoming a little second nature, but even then you still have to try to analyze your own art to make sure you didn't forget something. But I guess if it was easy, everyone would do it.

Thank you again! You're an absolute life saver 🥺 This is off topic, but I wanted to ask about text line spacing. I've noticed some WT Originals have their spacing set to 1.5x instead of the usually default 1x. Is 1.5x spacing better practice?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered how much thought goes behind that spacing. for example, In Krita it defaults to a huge amount of space. Some comics I've seen have tons of space between lines. I would say go with the one you like the best. 1.5 will take up more room room, but possibly make it easier to read for some people? Though it doesn't seem much more readable to me. Do you feel like you have a preference for one or the other?

Thanks for the tips! As a writer I defiantly want to understand things from an arts perspective, any tips for how I can communicate with an artist without confusing them or at worst over stepping? I want to try and see how as a writer I can sketch what I'm calling "story boards" so that way after I'm done writing a scene I can take key moments and maybe some minor supporting moments and sketch them out. Nothing too detailed since I trust an artists eye more than my own. One thing I've always appreciated with visual story telling is the ability to show the audience something important without them noticing it. Without rambling too much about literary versus visual story telling, I want to help insert details that will help tell my story in the background. Using angles and panel motifs/structures to set up stories tone and foreshadow. Know what I mean? I love your videos! Webtoons seems like the thing for me and I wanted to say thanks for all the help!
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's all about finding the right artist that you can work with to get those types of panels and have the creative relationship blossom. It can be a tricky line to walk, you don't want the artist to feel stifled by a lot of forced panel layout and camera positioning. I started as a writer and slowly taught myself to draw. I think it's a really good idea that writers at least attempt drawing one of their own scripts so they can experience it from the other side, gives a lot of insight into what works and doesn't with a comic script.

It's a toss up. I think 70-80% of webtoon readers are mobile readers, so you're prolly okay. I've been doing desktop, because it will work on both. Though occasionally I'll toss in some longer panels that will be way more enjoyable on mobile than desktop.

Good ideas. In general, you want a month worth of buffer. But really depends on your schedule, how reliable your life is, and how often you post. If you have a stable schedule, you don't need a large buffer. Crazy schedule, you need a big buffer. You prolly also want to have your story planned. You know how it ends, the big picture of how you get there. You can work out the details, dialogue, etc as you draw. You kinda have to learn what works for you personally, it's all very specific to individual creators. The more you make, the sooner you'll figure out what works for you.

This hit the right spot 😉 I don't completely understand the rule of thirds, but it seems simple enough to execute. One issue I have when paneling is how to compose a scene with buildings and making them fit; example, in my story a scene transitions onto a building to introduce the reader to the next character. I want to do a wide shot of it and surrounding area; when I try to do that the building looks condensed. This is an ongoing problem for me....thanks in advance and I hope I explained it right 🙂

This video is so underrated. You explain the importance of panel as an instrument to carry the story. You advise us to study some other artist panel, but I found that some webtoon reader can hilariously pointed some panel/angle/chara as ‘a plagiarism’ because it have a same structure with another comic. But I know some posture, some expression, some panel composition can be similar maybe because of coincidence, or inspired by. I still dont understand the line. For example Saber (fate series) n Violet (violet evergarden) have blonde hair and blue/green eyes. Shanks (one piece) and Gildarts Clive (fairy tail) both have red hair and similar vibe. Also, some poses can be similar, like sitting down in a chair, or running. How do these parts urge some people to make a plagiarism allegation?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't pay much attention to it. Some people will shout into the void hoping that someone will pay attention to them. Just worry about yourself. If you know you didn't copy something, then don't worry about it. If you know you copied something just hide a little note in the drawing by your signature or just hidden in the background that says "After Walter Ostlie" or whoever the original artist was. It basically a way of paying tribute to the original artist. But there are only so many poses, so many eye colors, so many hair colors, there's bound to be overlap. Some people love to complain.

@@walterostlie Oh, like an ‘homage’. Yes, I understand your point. And maybe I can put a writer's note between chapters like my bts behind certain homages or maybe make a video about it before it becomes an issue. @walterostlie

An ad revenue share simply means that a company will share some of their ad revenue with you for some reason. Very similar to KZfaq. Those advertisements you have to watch before a KZfaq video generate money for KZfaq. The creators who make the content on KZfaq get a small portion of that money. Depending on the contract there could be other stipulation regarding what kind of content you can produce, who owns the content, if the content needs to be exclusive, etc. Contracts and terms can vary a lot across different platforms.

How do you import the templates when you use the medibang paint for ipads?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't done it specifically for this situation, but it should be pretty simple. Go to the link in the description, enter the info, download the file on your ipad. It will be a ZIP file. Go to where it's saved on your ipad, Downloads prolly. Then open the zip file up by clicking on it, you'll see some files in there. You then need to "uncompress" the MDP (medibang) files in there or basically copy them out of the zip file onto your ipad, you can't use the MDP files while they are still in the ZIP file. Once you moved the files out of the ZIP onto your iPad, you should be able to open Medibang and open the MDP file wherever you moved it to. Hope that helps.

How do I know which font is the right font for comics? Also, I’m using procreate for my webcomic, and wanted to know your advice on weather this is a good platform to make your comic or not?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
Take a look at blambot.com and look at all the dialog fonts there. Any of those will be good for a comic, just pick one that you think works with your comic's art style. There are free and paid fonts on there, but they are all made by a professional comic letterer. Procreate is a good art program, but I don't know if it's the best for comics. You should check out Medibang as a free iPad program, or ClipStudio for a paid program. One of the reasons I'm not sure about procreate is their lettering engine, comics require a long of font manipulation and I don't think Procreate is there yet. You could always draw in procreate and import that into medibang to letter. I would suggest making a few short comics just for practice, maybe just 5-10 panels and test the process until you have a method you like.

Sorry. I have other videos about panels that may help, but there isn't really any rules to shape/placement/amount. Just start very simple and you can grow into weird shapes and stuff from there. If you mean a "file" when you say "page", then you can do 1 panel per file. If you're talking traditional printed comic, then you usually want to stay around 4-6 panels per printed page, but there is no rule and you can do 1 panel or even 13 panels.

@@theninthazy6316 Sorta yea. Do a test process from your original drawing to uploading to a test fake comic on webtoon and make sure it works the way you want it.

Hah, well if you like drawing backgrounds, then there's nothing wrong with that. I try to avoid them, but I still draw them a lot. My brain is trying to punish me, I think.

What i find hardest is having people just stand around and talk. I try to tell the story with thier body language and facial expressions as well, but it always feels so repetitive to draw. On the other hand, other comics do the same, and i dont feel it is repetetive when i read them...

It can be tricky and we gotta remember that we're our own worse critics. We'll spend hours tweaking something that 90% of the popular doesn't care about ;-) So sometimes we have to get out of our own heads because readers don't consume our comics the same way we consume them while drawing them.

"don't spend a lot of time on the background unless its important"... HEH *celebrates* Forgive me if you already have a video like this but do you think you could do a video specifically for writing compelling side-characters or what you think of cliches? I would love to hear your thoughts on it!

I haven't done a video like that, but it's a good idea. Thanks!
