During their walk down memory lane, the group touches on the back story behind the famous ‘The Look’ on Alpe d’Huez at the 2001 Tour de France, the 2003 Tour de France when Jan put 1’36 into Lance in the first individual time trial, and Lance cracked on the Tourmalet, before coming back with an amazing ride on Luz Ardiden after his crash, where Jan made the decision to wait for Lance and allowed him to catch up, the different media pressure each superstar received in their respective home countries and how the intense glare in Germany has affected Jan. Before they go, they revisit Jan’s appearance, and speech at the Discovery Team’s 2005 Tour de France Celebration Dinner.

Met Jan in 2022 on my way back home from the final stage of the Tour de France in Paris. When I first passed and recognised him, I was so shocked, I couldn't believe my childhood hero was just sitting there. I was unsure whether or not I should bother him, or rather let him live his life in peace. When I got off the train, I decided to at least ask him for a picture and we had a short conversation. He is such a modest, down to earth guy, he remains a hero for me.

God, as a teen, watching these Tours each holiday after school in Germany, i HATED Lance so much, cheering each and every year for Jan sitting in front of the TV. Now i absolutely LOVE to see this friendship. Truly inspiring. Willkommen zurück im Leben, Jan - you're a true fighter and a legend. Thanks a lot to Lance, George, Johan, JB and the whole WEDU Team

Back in those years, I had the idea of turning the TdF into a scripted reality show, "Big Time Cycling" 😂 They would produce a European version of the TdF in which Jan would best the then much reviled Lance in much of Europe. And, concurrently air a North American version in which Jan was cast as the "evil German" and Lance would heroically prevail 🇺🇸💪🏻

I was also a teen but watching from US. I never even rode bikes but was absolutely gripped by the drama this rivalry generated. It was such a golden time period and inspired me to train in another sport. I am so thankful for both Jan & Lance and unsung warriors on their teams who lead us on such a journey.

I’m German and my first Tour was 1997 and have been hooked on Jan ever since. The rivalry was quite a bitter one from our perspective but it was still captivating. And 2003 felt like the culmination of all cycling gods coming together for Jan, and then that tragic rainy day. Then we had the tough times of cycling and all the revelations. But Lance always had that aura around him. I’d rather not be his enemy but you have to respect his belief and passion for the sport. And the friendship between him and Jan is just amazing. I think thanks to Lance, Jan Ullrich has an image in the US that we Germans could not possibly imagine. Here, the people love him, but the press does not. I am glad he found this connection. And let’s not forget the passion from Johan and George either. Thanks guys!!!

It's fantastic so see you doing better Jan. I really respect that you didn't hide your issues from the public. As a huge cycling fan who has suffered tremendously myself with mental health and addiction problems, I can say that more sports heroes need to have the courage to let their fans know what s going on. You were an inspiration to me more than you could ever know. The rivalry between you and Lance piqued my fascination with the idea of pushing my body to the extreme limit that has culminated in a very beautiful and rewarding life hiking and climbing in the mountains. You may have saved my life by being so awesome. You're a great man and you taught me how to suffer like a man through my TV set. Keep riding and keep yourself in this happy state, man. @@sheldonrevis9268 First I am not young. Second there is absolutely nothing to relativate about doping. The fish always starts stinking from the head and people like you, lifting theses cheaters on a throne today, are still a problem. They were simply cheaters and cheated over the riders how did not do any kind of doping and played fair. I was one of them riding in continental teams for more then 6 years, also competed against Jan and many other in german championship races and never ever had a chance to step up into low/mid pro level. And the reason is simply cause the majority was using drugs, as it is evident, that EPO gives you at minimum a 10 to 15% boost in performance, which would have brought me from an average german semi pro, to a mid level pro rider. You are simply a shame for our sport, preferring the spectacal over fair sport. It's like celebrating Trump for being a criminal or Bush or Putin for starting an unnecessary war. Shame!

I've read and I think L.A has said, Jan's one of the most gifted cyclists who's ever raced and a great competitor. And who doesn't enjoy reliving their great battles on KZfaq? I think Jan suffered more than most from the TdF scandals especially in his home country so I'm stoked to see him here, smiling and hopefully well. And continues to remain so. Jan always seemed like a nice human being, to me anyway, so wish him only the best.

Makes me super happy to see Jan looking well. He's always been a monster figure from that era and always seemed to be such a great guy. This just confirms it. Viva la Ullrich. Great to hear 4 guys just story telling and seeing former rivals, now friends, laughing with one another.

I freaking love those guys. Jan Ullrich is the reason I started on my bike. Lance is the second reason. And Johan is such a smart and eloquent character. What a luck to have him on your team.

Its very nice to see and watch Lance and Jan talk about inside thoughts about those races , the rivalries they encountered . I really feel that it is Jan the reason why Lance become very famous . I still watch the Tour de France until now , but the time of Armstrong and Ulrich is the time I can never forget and until now I still watch the videos of their races at you tube...
