THEMOVE team are all scratching their heads at the tactics of UAE and Pogacar. Sometimes the mental victory is more important and that may well have happened with Jonas Vingegaard and team Visma-lease-a-bike. Lance keeps reminding everyone of just how much climbing is still to come.

Hi from Denmark (again). Just to let you all know, if u haven´t heard yet? After the stage, Jonas was in tears and very emotional, and for the first time, he really speaks up about the crash and the days and month after. Literally him, his family and close around, in fact thought he was gonna pass. Those 3 weeks at the hospital, has been much more worse, than anyone thought? From the start of the Tour, he continued said that, just to be here is a bonus. And look now. No one in he´s team, could imagine this to happens? Not could the World. I have a feeling, that i was watching history today, unfold in front of me. Goosebumps and some tears, from my side. Love from Denmark.

An important distinction here is that Tadej is enjoying it. And it's the intelligent thing to do. Reminded of Wiggins' honesty that he wasn't enjoying it when he was at his peak. Similarly, Jonas doesn't look like he's enjoying it. It is a joy to watch and undoubtedly great fun. An enormously talented rider able to enjoy himself. When he retires, he'll remember his attacks and the fun more than the records and stats, which are just numbers at the end of the day.

Pogi consistently makes poor decisions on when to attack, while Jonas is slow and steady and calculated and the better climber. Not looking good for Pogi this weekend. Now, if Jonas isn’t in the race, Pogi is brilliant. Problem is he’s been racing Jonas for five years now and should know better. Jonas showing the wisdom of holding back on the gravel stage. Just wait until it’s a mountain top finish and Jonas snatches back that minute. Loving the race though. They need each other to make this fascinating.
@bilwit

Jonas is like Froome and Tadej is like Contador, except his race instinct is worse. He cannot help himself. Makes for exciting racing but, like Lance pointed out, he could have easily had at least one more Tour win if he just chilled out and raced strategically.

@@bilwit Pogi has a ego problem imo. It does‘nt match with his „always friendly“ appearence. I‘m quite sure, in reality he is far less nice as he want‘s everybody to think he is. Thats what I love about Lance and Wiggo. They say what they think, even when their opinion is unpopular, something which is rare in these days of political correctness. ✌️

I think Pogacar is worried about the high mountains. I think he identified this stage as one where he could gain a small amount of time furthering his cushion on Vingegaard. It backfired.
@dfuher968
@dfuher968 Ай бұрын
Yeah, thats what I thought. The stage did seem perfect for Pogi, just the kind of stage he loves, short, explosive climbs, while the big mountains, loooong steady climbs are definitely Jonas territory. I think, this was planned, and instead of waiting until the last climb and repeat the Galibier tactic, they wanted to go early to get more time. I dont think, they believe, 1:15 (now 1:14) is enough. And if Jonas keeps improving, it wont be.

Almost 70 here, and started riding/racing in 1970. IF you are in the USA? (but given the Stingray remake, I am guessing so) those Merckx years, well into the Hinault-LeMond years were almost impossible to follow the Tour, or any other Euro racing, without a short wave radio at your disposal (and then you'd better be able to fully understand RAPIDLY spoken French as well!!). Even the (NY) Times, as 'international' as they claim(ed) to be, barely gave even final results of the Tour back then, and when they did it was a two sentence blurb about Merckx winning by however many minutes and that's it!!

He said, the 2 of them really challenged him on descents to try to get the fear out of him. Tho its understandable, its not all gone already, he did think, he was going to die, when he crashed. And Galibier and the TT showed, he isnt 100% yet. But he keeps improving. Pogi really does need to drive perfectly, if hes going to stay ahead, once they hit the big mountains.

I don’t always agree with Lance, but I must say LA, George, Sir Wiggo, and JB2 nailed every single comment to perfection today. Loved Lance’s truth about Alan Piper vs. Matxin. The Sheik of the UAE needs to find a new Director Sportif who can control Pogacar. Pog is no more hard headed that LA was. Johan and LA had and still have a great relationship.

Pogacar is racing this Tour de France as though he didn't lose the last two to Vingegaard by racing the same way. If he wanted to attack, it should have been by having his teammates pulling one after the other until rivals started dropping. It feels inevitable he will lose big time in one of the upcoming stages to Jonas having worn himself out going for all of these smaller gains.

You could already see some of the cracks in Pogacar's form on the TT stage. If you look at the climbing part on that stage, he did nok take alot of time on the other riders, i don't rememember exactly but i think it was only like 6 seconds on Vauquelin and 12 seconds on Campenaerts. A Pogacar in top form would take atleast 20-30 seconds on riders like that, like he did in the Giro. From now on i think Pogacar have to race really smart because i don't think his form is getting better compared to Vingegaard.

Jonas was only faster by 5cm. It was a mental victory for Jonas but nothing more than that. Pogi has got to as Sir Bradley suggested calm down and stop burning matches. He has a buffer and should defend that and use this week to set up for the last week when the shit will hit the fan. I can see Pogi eventually caving in the last week. UAE must have data available to see how Pogi is holding up but he seems to be a little loose wire sometimes. In his post race interviews is seems flat and tired. Granted it must be crappy to deal with the press after every stage. The Podcast is great btw.

Sharp observations from Wiggins about Pogi’s juveline attitudes and fear of Jonas. It always surprises me how so many analysts seem to completely forget their analyzing when it comes to Pogacar, all they ever do is throwing to explain which external factors have made him lose to a rider who is actually just superior in certain aspects of cycling. Yes MVDP is stronger going up the Poggio. And yes Jonas is stronger in attritional climbing stages. Pogi is still overall the best rider in the world, but he is not the best at everything, And Pogi and his team seem to have the same lack of understanding. After three years they still seem to think that they can crush Jonas.

I think Pogi just can’t help himself. He wants to win every stage and embarrass everyone while at it. The problem is that this is not the same caliber of riders as in the Giro.

Hello from Brazil! Just one correction. Sir Wiggo said there are 3 cycling knights: Cav, Hoy and himself. Sir Jason Kenny, another track cyclist was knighted after winning his seventh olympic gold medal and second silver medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

I love you guys but let me read this back to you from Bradley: "He asked a question at the end there to Tadej, did you, have you lost the psychological battle today? And he said no, I don't think I have so it's on his mind..." That is some insightful commentary there. 😂

Whether he wins this year's tour or not, Jonas Vingegaard is different. That's the kind of crash that many cyclists are never the same after. They ride again but they stop dominating. Jonas isn't in his top form yet but it's clear he ain't going anywhere. He's gonna win more tours in the future.

I Think you are missing the fact that the reason why Pogacar is riding so agressively is that he suspects Vingegaard will be stronger in the last week of the Tour and therefore he is trying to gain as big a time advantage as he can.

Please keep in mind that while Jonas made one hell of an effort and it was a great win, all he really did was match Pogacar’s effort, Pogacar was still able to ride away on the steep climbs, and Jonas had to claw his way back on a less severe climb.
