Күн бұрын

It's 52SE Friday again and, today, we invite you to meet the chromis school tank. Large colonies of acropora, a school of reef chromis, and a grouper make for an incredibly unique saltwater aquarium you won't see anywhere else. What goes in to a SPS reef tank like this? How is it managed? Watch here to find out more!

OMG Thank you for making a tank with mature live rock! TBS is the best. The sterile white rock fad has been such a detriment to the reefing community and has caused people to quit in frustration that could have been saved with good live rock.

First time in a very long time I have seen an original and simple concept about to be executed professionally. Schooling fish + predator, elegant, simple concept but core to marine environments. Second, using less species of corals and planting the frags to grow together, rad! And a great counter to the collectoritis craze. Like what I’m seeing and exited about 52weeks of reefkeeping again! Any chance you’ll get some Solomon Corals in the tank?

Something I'm happy to see is tanks designed for habitat not cost. I know these tanks are all pricey but I'm so happy to see it done right with a realistic cost upfront. If you've done this atleast once you know your gonna spend that plus all your mistakes in the end anyhow. Thanks brs!

I kept 40 Chromis in 7ft with a miniatus grouper. The number did dwindle quite quickly! Id say after 3 months I had about 25-30 chromis left. The miniatus would find a way to pick off chromis over time :)
@siggyincr7447
@siggyincr7447 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm guessing the only way you could avoid that is by only introducing the grouper after the corals are big enough that the chromis can all get in between the branches and using corals that have the right branch structure to keep the grouper out but let the chromis in quick. And even so, my guess is that you'll need an occasional addition of a few new chromis once in a while.

I went out and got a generator for my tanks. Power has gone out about a dozen time in 5 years. Still never used the thing. The way i see it is if a fish can travel in a bag for 3-4 days without flow,Food and gas exchange. Then i dont think having a generator for a 4 hour outage at best. Is the right solution. Better to just let the tank be for the time and dont mess with it a bunch and dont spend alot of time around the tank. Open window near tank and will be fine 👍🏼

I found a few interesting articles in the scientific literature about C. viridis (blue-green chromis). One showed that metabolism was decreased and fitness increased from shoaling vs solitary individuals (individuals in shoals are healthier). Another showed that that C. viridis has a unique sleeping behavior with rapid fin movements that increase water oxygenation within acropora where flow is low (C. viridis sleeping within SPS colonies is actually beneficial for the coral). And perhaps most interesting for this specific tank: C. viridis in captivity showed no preference in association between real branching coral skeleton and 3D printed exact reproductions of the same skeleton. You could 3D print large coral colonies and the fish would use those while real colonies are growing in.

I love this idea, *but*, I think in order to successfully execute it you would need a much larger tank -- like at minimum five hundred gallons. You would also need to spend at least a couple of years just growing the corals big enough to give your chromis something approaching the habitat they would have in the wild. Hope you prove me wrong...

I think the idea could work, but it would have to be a much larger tank, and you would need to spend a couple of years just growing the corals first, and who has that kind of patience? Also, you would need to keep said tank plumbed into a fully stocked system while the coral grows, otherwise the tank would get all out of whack from adding a grouper and a giant school of chromis all at once...@@frederikaflokiren9707

In the wild they are not trapped in a box with the predator. In the wild the predators come out mostly at night, and their presence is temporary. This one is here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Another option for "wet" aquascaping (that worked well for me) is two-part epoxy like Z Spar Splash Zone. Curious to see your scape video to see how your method compares. The biggest downside for me was a long cure time, and having to essentially rig the rocks into position overnight (under water) so the epoxy could set.

Not so sure about this one. The grouper is going to pick the chromis off or keep them in a state of constant fear. Tank isn't big enough to have the grouper "just pass by" and "not even try" to eat them. So assuming the grouper doesn't eat them one by one, they are still chromis and I haven't seen anyone be successful long term with a school. When their numbers start to dwindle, you will have to replace them and risk uronema again and again. I don't care who collects and treats them. Uronema is one of the worst and hardest parasites we deal with in the hobby. Once it is there, this can never be a chromis tank again. I would dump 20 chromis into my tank tomorrow if I thought I could provide them a good life but they are becoming one of those fish best left in the ocean IMO

There’s lots of people in the comments saying this can’t be done for two reasons. One is that the grouper will pick them off slowly. The second is that the chromis will pick each other off slowly. Go back and watch the first clown harem tank episode. Ryan talks about how most people said more than 2 clowns was trouble. But it had been done successfully. And if it happens in the wild we *should* be able to do it in a properly designed aquarium system. Turns out it’s not difficult to keep a clown harem if you follow the right recipe. Well, people *have* been able to keep chromis schools successfully long term. There is definitely a formula. The added wrinkle of having a predator will be interesting. Wild Chromis school because it gives them a better chance of avoiding predation, and they are almost exclusively found around large branching corals that give protection. Is there a recipe for success here? I think so. I think this is it: QT chromis for Uronema Limit aggression among the chromis by heavy feeding. Give ample large branching SPS from the start. Feed the grouper as much as possible. People will be surprised at what is possible in captivity when the only priorities are healthy and thriving fish.
@jdamommio
@jdamommio 10 ай бұрын
What's your plan to stop the grouper from picking off chromis as they sleep? All the feeding in the world can't suppress his instincts. In the wild, the chromis could flee. Here, they are trapped with a predator.
@jdamommio
