AT THE TIME OF THIS VIDEO :
I have been making leather products for the past 13 months, mostly bags, backpacks and small items like wallets and card-holders. I am still learning a ton every time I take on a new project and always appreciate feedback on my creations.
For the moment I don't take orders as I like to spend too many hours getting the finished product as good as I can : this means that if I were to sell these bags, the selling price would be way more than the bags are worth due to the hours of work involved.
As always, do let me know what you think of this creation and this video. If you have any tips or comments about the techniques used, please let me know by dropping a comment below this video :)
Thanks for watching!

As far as your question on whether water or oil dye is better, I find that oil dye is superior in just about every method. I can see a bit of an advantage for water-based dye in an airbrush as it doesn't dry as quickly, but it isn't as even usually which defeats the point of the airbrush.
@makingmypassion3142

I missed how exactly you broke your brush but it got jammed up and stopped spraying at all you probably need to clean the brush. There should be instructions for how to do that that came with the brush but that's just a guess.
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input on this ! To answer both your coments, I broke the brush by stupidly trying to tighten something that was already tight and broke the threading on one of the main pieces (yes, I'm an idiot sometimes). Since filming this video I have learnt that the biggest mistake I did was chosing an air-brush made for painting small models where the flow of dye is way too little. For future builds I'll have to buy/rent a professional brush made for larger areas. I still want to experiment with water based dies eventually though ;)

What you need is a touch up spray gun. The airbrush is meant for fine lines and drawings. So the air pressure was to high and drying out the stain before it hit your leather. With the touch up gun will allow you to spray a large area by shooting out more product. You still need to practice before you actually do this on your project

Hi, I have watched all your videos of leather craft. Firstly, I have to say they are very enjoyable to watch. You talk a lot about burnishing. Actually the gum does not make the visual effect of the leather. The effect is the vegetable tanning which is burned on the surface (of the edges in this case) and give this darker brown color. You can also burnish the surface of the leather for another variety of finishing. And I have to say again, I really enjoy your videos. Continue the good work. ps: I have no experiment into leather craft, I would like to start. But got experience in making leather. :)
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
So pleased to hear you like my videos, thank you :) Yes, I have learnt a lot since my first videos and used to have big issues with burnishing (which would explain why I often spend a long time talking about it). Before I understood how it worked and what different leather types existed I was having a really hard time achieving a good burnish.

Played around with spraying dye. Thin it down with alcohol or similar. I used Fiebing Pro Dye with up to a 50-50 mix with red spirit (Not sure what it's called in English). Prevents the nozzle from clogging up.

Have you tried reinforcing the strap mounts with rivets? You should be able to add rivets even now that you are done building it.
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message Jarrod, this is of course a possibility. In theory it would be the best thing to do, however I hate the idea of the different types of metal one one bag (the ring holding the straps is brushed steel whereas the rivets would be copper). I'm planning to use rivets in my next build though which should be interesting.

Question on the Handle. I have found the flat handle to be bothersome when carrying off the shoulder, did you consider a round handle? Why the flat versus round? Thanks
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 4 жыл бұрын
The reason I went for this designe is that it's something I can make quite easily and that is nicely integrated to the bag. I don't find that it gets in the way at all as you can't feel it on the back when wearing the bag. I may consider a round handle for other builds, but in this case I'm very happy with the choice :)

One thing I’d like to know with your videos is the price you’ve paid for hides. I think you said you used two hides of different thickness so how much did this project cost you? Please include that info in future videos. I think that would be very interesting
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point: these bags cost me anywhere between 150 and 200€ to make. I live in France where the availability of good leather is very low and the price can go up very quickly depending on where you get your hides. I'll add this in my videos in future videos (if I remember) but am sure you would be able to get better prices on leather if you lived in the US for example, where the tradition of and need for leatherwork is greater, meaning that good leather is more readily available and cheaper. Thanks for your comment Andre!

@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
Heya Frankie thanks for the message! I use a sharpening stone that I keep at my work bench and give every cutting tool a quick sharpen before I use it. Initially, most are sold with a sharp edge, but with a wide angle : it will stay sharp longer but not as sharp as it was. I tend to spend some time with all new blades getting the angle quite thin before they are "useable" for me : up to you to find your sweetspot between having a somewhat sharp blade that requires little maintenance or a very sharp blade you need to take care of regularly. Moreover, my sharpening technique is quite primitive and I often find the blades aren't sharp enough for me anyway ^^" In the meantime, a trick I have found is using a scalpel with disposable blades.

Iwata makes a sprayer specifically for dyes. Pro dye works better. It's a liquid oil colorant in an alcohol base suspension. Regular leather dye is a powder based colorant with the same alcohol based suspention Also I believe it's spelled Sewn now sown. You're not harvesting wheat.

I'm a self taught leather worker, mostly doing pistol holsters, knife sheaths, and I did one really nice possibles bag to hold muzzle loading accessories to load and fire a Hawken rifle with. Most everything I make is designed on the fly. I have a perfectionist streak that keeps me from getting anything finished, and so to complete a project I have to have a 'damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead' approach. Otherwise the project stalls and never gets anywhere. All that said, I've learned for myself that getting my design or pattern right, details ironed out, problems addressed -in the design phase-, and the very beginning, is huge. Bad design, bad finished item. Really thought out design: project goes together smoothly. Often my stuff is a little fast and loose, but if I get my design or pattern right it all comes together. The little flaws are what make a hand made product the item of wonder that it is, so don't let them bother you too much. 2 last neat thoughts: 1. Minwax wood stain makes excellent leather stain, is cheap, and you can find it nearby without having to order. Many color choices that are appropriate for veg tanned leather. So far it hasn't hurt my outdoor use leather items in the least. 2. I accidentally made shoe polish, and, it works great. Melt beeswax and either boiled linseed or neatsfoot oil (either works) in a double boiler, and I like to add some fairly dark reddish brown dye. When it cools, it's about the consistency of 'sno-seal' leather finish, and works pretty well at protecting leather from rain or moisture. It tends to soften, darken and protect what I put it on. I've affectionately named it 'Orc Blood' after watching LOTR. YMMV, but it's a fun area to experiment with. Good luck, and thanks for your videos, I may have to make myself a nice 'Indiana Jones would've loved to have had this' kind of backpack or leather rucksack this winter after hunting season ends. Mitch in NC, USA
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mitchell for such a long response :D I took some time to answer this as I wanted to test out the home-made shoe polish for myself. As it's a 50/50 beeswax and neatsfoot oil, I think it falls more into the lines of "amazing leather conditioner" than anything else ! Easy and cheap to make, gives a great result and is certainly going to be the best way to take care of your leather items. I recommend trying this if you're into leather bags, shoes and accessories :) So glad to hear you enjoyed the video and that I'm not alone in having fun making mistakes !
