I have been making leather products for the past 7 months, mostly bags, backpacks and small items like wallets and card-holders. I am still learning a ton every time I take on a new project and always appreciate feedback on my creations.
For the moment I don't take orders as I like to spend too many hours getting the finished product as good as I can : this means that if I were to sell these bags, the selling price would be way more than the bags are worth due to the hours of work involved.
As always, do let me know what you think of this creation and this video. If you have any tips or comments about the techniques used, please let me know by dropping a comment below this video :)
Thanks for watching!

Just because your leather is absorbing the neatsfoot oil doesn’t mean it needed it. A lot of people don’t seem to know what leather is and how it works. And no, the Fiebing’s Pro dye doesn’t dry out the leather as much as you seem to think it does. The alcohol evaporates and leaves all the oils inside the leather mostly intact. Yes alcohol dries out skin but ;leather is no longer skin. When skin is tanned, it turns into something completely different. Alcohol based dye is absolutely fine. Vegetable tanned leather with always absorb oil. A light coast is all you need. Drowning it in oil isn’t good for it and can even cause it to degrade and even rot as well as potentially grow mold.

Purists might not like the shoe polish top coat, but I never considered it until you used it. Think about it, shoes are stretched, scratched, close to the street dust, etc. Why shouldn't shoe polish be a great finish for a piece that is out in the weather? I think it's a great alternative to very expensive topcoats like Resolene, etc. Way to go. This bag is fantastic. I would like to know the source you used for that clasp. My husband and I own a Home Construction business, I've never seen those and they are surprisingly stylish for their original intended use. Hardware is the toughest part of sourcing for leatherwork. I have yet to find a go-to source for my work, it's here and there and everywhere. I never tend to use the most common hardware, it's just boring. Thanks for the vids!!! Karen
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
So glad you like the video ! Take the shoe polish trick with a hint of caution : since these videos, someone who has been in the industry for several decades pointed out that some of the chemicals in your basic shoe polishes will dry out the leather over time. I have since then experimented with making my own conditioner / polish with beeswax and neatsfoot oil that takes a lot of hard work but should be the best alternative in conditioning and keeping the leather protected over time. Also it's stupidly easy and cheap to make - all you do is melt half a cup of beeswax in the microwave and add half a cup of neatsfoot oil, let it rest and you're done ! You can then experiment with different oils and ratios to get the perfect mix for you. The hardware used here is often found in shipping and sailing shops as it is a quick release latch often used on boats.

Great video James. I've seen saddle makers use a paintbrush to apply 4 coats of neatsfoot to a saddle. Its normal to apply a lot to veg tan, considering it is completely unfinished leather. Keep up the great work!!
@lukasrohulan6997
@lukasrohulan6997 6 жыл бұрын
With saddles it is a great idea and it protects it and gives it a great colour too. On other item putting too much neatsfoot might not be too great of an idea. For example with wallets when you put too much oil onto the leather, the oil will find its way through the leather and will affect the inside. Some receipts use thermo printing and the print will disappear when in contact with oil.

Your work and the obvious passion you have for it is beautiful and inspiring, James. I have done leathercraft for 35+ years. I have had extensive experience in shoe repair(as an apprentice, owner-operator) and as a leathercraft educator (as a manager of more than two Tandy Leather stores) and as a shoe and boot manufacturer and would like to share something with you and your followers, of which I am one. The use of shoe polish on vegetable-tanned leather is not recommended as the polish causes the grain-side (epidural) layer to constrict (pucker), and become brittle resulting in unsightly cracks when flexed. Chrome tannage compresses those fibers in the first place so shoe polish is not an issue. (remember the Bugs Bunny cartoons when he sprayed the Alum in the opera singer's mouth? same thing) However, veg-tanning allows for carving and stamping, because those fibers haven't been compressed yet. Rather, I would recommend using anything but shoe polish. I have had extensive experience with this issue and can confirm these statements.
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Stan and thank you sooooo much for this message ! I've been using shoe polish for some time now and it's great to have some real feedback on the cons of this method. What would you recommend using instead ? I do not like eco sheen as I find it simply does not do what I'm looking for (deepen the colour, add shine, protect). I'm also looking to make my own polish/conditioner using bees wax : any recipe you would recommend ?
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking of 1/2 beeswax, 1/4 coconut oil and 1/4 neatsfoot oil... any thoughts ?
@stanhegeman8751
@stanhegeman8751 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, James. I love your design concepts. As for your finish-conditioning recipe, I believe you should separate the two. From my experience, limited tho it is, I would stay away from vegetable-based oils as they tend to become rank as they decompose. I would recommend sticking to animal-based fat liqueur solutions. Bee's wax certainly qualifies, as does neatsfoot oil. other than that, I would consult a chemist. LOL.
@stanhegeman8751

Perhaps examining the contents of , say, Dr. Jackson's conditioner and the Aussie conditioner with it's beeswax formula and then formulating a finish to incorporate would be the way to go. Best wishes. I have found best results by separating coloring, conditioning and finishing from one another.
@JamesBerry
@JamesBerry 5 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I've tried reading up on this and what I find is quite limited : most people have their own idea what works for them and it's tough to find proper reading material on the topic... especially as most store brands will be very careful not to say exactly what's in their products. I'm going to try making my own finish using 50/50 neatsfoot oil and bee's wax (maybe adding in some natural pigments for colouring if I can find some) - would love to hear your thoughts on this also :)

Since you are British, and I am fully assuming you are in the U.K., go to your nearest saddlery or tack shop and get yourself some leather wax and leather soapie. Especially for dried out leathers this will work a treat. I should know, I’ve had to clean and recondition my fair share of dried out, crusty, and very old horse tack. Don’t use it on wallets though, but things like straps that need softening, bags that need a clean and other assorted non wallet items it will work fantastic. I also use it on leather belts and my dogs leather harnesses. And yes, leather soapie is great to clean dirty old leather shoes.

Thanks Desire for the very useful tips :) I'm actually based in Paris but can find most things over the internet (praise be to Amazon!) so I'll look these up and add them to the list of things I need to try. @desirebaker5775
@desirebaker5775 6 жыл бұрын
JamesBerry saddle soap is amazing. When you do get a leather wax, make sure it’s for horse tack. That stuff can condition the driest nastiest leather. And if all else fails (say you dry leather out “beyond” salvation) use olive oil. But if you do that, make sure you let it “dry” completely before even thinking of using it. But for your purposes, saddle soap and saddle wax should work a treat. But like I said, do not use it on wallets. And a word of the wise,with both saddle soap and wax, less is more. So get a small tub of each because it will last you years.

When I eventually upgrade I'll make sure I share those brands and measurements with you guys =) The only thing I have found for the moment that makes a real difference is getting good quality thread: in my case it's 0.8mm polyester pre-waxed thread as it's going to give me the best results in terms of durability and strength for the work I do.

For the thread I've tried a few and prefer 0.8mm thick Nylon waxed thread a it's ready for use as soon as I need it, is VERY strong and the ends can be burnt down quick and nice for great finished ends that will not come undone.

Hi Adel, thanks for your message. The clasp is a quick release carabiner (not sure of the exact name for these): www.amazon.com/Durable-Stainless-Shackles-Release-Rigging/dp/B011RGV540/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522763687&sr=8-3&keywords=quick+release+carabiner

Hahah thanks Pablo, glad you like the finished product =) I understand the talking part is not for everyone, so I would not feel it's at all wrong to mute the video and listen to music while watching ;)
