The TIL311 (s/a DIS1417) is a really beautiful display. I used to use them all the time on designs I did for industry back in the late 1970s and early 80s. Because of their integral logic, they are not scanned in the usual way, and their dot segments are always on, eliminating the flicker that sometimes occurs with matrix scanned LED displays. But they DO suck power! They are also very easy to use, driven by simple logic, or by computer circuits without the need to write/use scanning routines. They were also commonly used on one of the very first personal computers, the COSMAC ELF (and its clones), which used the 1802 microprocessor.
