Description
In this video, we take a look at how to use an Arduino as a component tester. In this case, we are testing some vintage TIL311 hexadecimal LED displays. Using the Arduino makes this a quick and easy way to test several displays. We also take a brief look at the Visual Micro plug-in for Visual Studio that provides an excellent development environment and debugger for Arduino projects. Links are below.
This quick project is a good Segway into a couple of upcoming videos on an open-source project I’m developing which uses an Arduino as a component tester. Stay tuned…

Very cool video Bert. Those decimal LED current limiting resistors look like 33 Ohm (Orange, Orange, Black) if im seeing that correctly. I might have thought them current limiting resistors would be better a bit higher value though, perhaps more like 330 Ohm. Nice displays them TIL311's.

Hi Aron. They are 330 ohm. I suspect the color looks wrong because of the lighting, etc.

Hey Birt, I‘m not share if you know there is a nice little replacement board for these displays made and a Hackaday article „DIYTIL311“ using an atmega in VQFN and smd leds. Infact I know of an older project that used an pal or gal22v10 and micro LEDs. So there are options to replace these power hungry displays. A long time ago I used an z8 micro and around 200 leds for an multiplexed 8 digit hexdisplay for an universal cpu/logic trainer board for a local school to have an classroom frontpanel of about 2 1/2 x 1‘ for their projects. That contraption was all CMOS and used only 80 to 120 mA depending on how bright the display was and how many LEDs were lit.

Thanks, In researching these I did find several such projects to make a modern replacement (with the help of the nice folks from the 1802 mailing list.) This was an easier/faster way to get to my main project without getting distracted by yet another side project :) And they are neat vintage displays :) I'll look up the links I found to modern replacement ideas later and put them in the description.

Would these be similar to the hdsp 0960?
@HeyBirt
@HeyBirt 4 жыл бұрын
They are the same idea. They have different pin-outs and the HDSP0960 has only 1 decimal point.

@@HeyBirt Cool, awesome displays. I am hoping to do some tinkering with them in the future. I am currently trying to finish up a project I started 2 or 3 years ago. I am not very good with code and most of it was done with the help of others. I am at a point where I am needing a little help. Here is the link to a video of my project. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frVdjbGCl56Yo2g.html I have tried reaching out to a bunch of people with no luck. It basically is a single digits clock with rtc and an Arduino and a minitron display. I am wanting the ability to set the time of the rtc with a single button. If you are interested, I would be super great ful. Let me know and I can send you the code thanks.

You can get something similar for the Raspberry Pi: shop.pimoroni.com/products/microdot-phat?variant=25454635527

That is a similar type of display but you can only use it on a Pi. The price was pretty good though.
