Hey kids! Time for a brand new Weekend Wankshop with your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller. I'm at the NAMM 2016 show right now, so this video was filmed in advance for your enjoyment. And oh how you will enjoy it.
I've devoted this lesson to teaching you how to play the scalding main lick to Scuttle Buttin' by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan! This is an absolute beast. I've always loved this tune (especially the live versions!) but had never learned how it was actually played.... until now!
Lots of tabs and lessons i see have you using tons of bends in this lick, and thats just not the case. Watch any version of SRV playing this, and you'll definitely see his left hand sliding around all over the first couple frets. Its ridiculously hard to play at tempo. I wish you luck, i burned a hole in my middle fingertip learning this thing!!!
Playing my Ibanez RG470 with Dimarzio pickups into my Kemper Profiler.
Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more hot licks!!!

Love your videos. Lots of info and technique. I haven't really played in a couple decades and just started getting back into it over the last 6 months. I will say I've forgotten a lot. With this though I think the 3-2-0 slide/pull off on the 3rd string is a 2-3-2-0 slide/pull off. I've watched him play it and I'm pretty sure he's doing that.

He played it on the album with bends (you can hear it in slow-mo). He changed it to slides on the road (most likely to conserve his fingers). Either method works, but the bends are MUCH easier (and actually correct). I know I've never been able to do the slides at all, but I can play the whole song if I do the bends, so people shouldn't give up instead of choosing one technique over the other.

I have been playing this one wrong for years. I remember the first time I heard this song, it was background music behind the 'plays of the week' on a local news channel. It was a while before I figured out it was Stevie. At first I thought he was "Stevie Rave On. I'm not sure I was wrong.

Ben, great to see someone breaking down the details of classic songs like this! One thing you didn’t note here (as most don’t) is that Stevie used his right hand middle finger (i.e chicken pickin’) on the e string for this lick rather than picking them. It makes it a lot easier to get this up to speed. Check it out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iM5jgtV3l9e-nmQ.html

I’m absolutely thrilled that you break these licks down for everyone! I definitely noticed your B(b) string was a touch flat, perhaps by 1-2hz. But it was just noticeable enough and was 'killing me softly’ the entire time 😏.I specifically hate when the B and G are just slightly off from each other like this when I'm playing..it’s about the most frustrating and ongoing battles I’ve ever had with an instrument ha. Great playing tho buddy, and again, thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom about these riffs..pretty cool stuff to say the least! You definitely break everything down in a great and logical way with plenty of detail and tips that novices and more experienced players alike van all benefit from and understand 👍🏼🤙🏼

Thanks Uncle Ben! Love your videos. Is it just me imagining it, or is SRV making it even more complicated by sliding up from fret 2 into fret 3 on the B and on the G string at the end of the hook? So in total 4 slides instead of 2 during the hook. I should add it doesn't make an actual difference to me as those additional slides are anyway unplayable for me at that speed.

No kidding there ain't any bends in the way Stevie played it; as per your sarcastic quip in the beginning, the man was legendary for playing with thick gauge strings, and even on .9's bending a full step that low on the fretboard is a pain. I have seen many of the tabs that have a bend on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string up to a Bb, all in the space of a 16th note or some ridiculously short value and rolled my eyes, as well.

Stevie Ray Vaughan would play it both with slides and bends. Not at the same time though. When he was on tour, the shows he did at the beginning, he would bend the strings. He said however after a while of doing shows, his hands would start to get tired and also he would rip his fingertips open. So later in the tour, he would start sliding the notes.

btw, I play whis lick with straight alternate picking because i think he did it that way and it has more dynamics which is important and one of his trademarks , it does create that inside the string situation, but I've kinda solwed it with upward pick slanting.. Works fine with me, kinda got uset to it... I play everything by srv that way I think..

Why would you tune down a half step to teach a lesson? Makes no sense. We know SRV was tuned down. But there's no reason you have to make it so anyone wanting to do this lesson has to retune their whole guitar. It's just a needless hassle.
