The end with spiderman swinging out into the snow and then showing the big Christmas tree with all the lights REALLY made me go...."is he gonna show up in the hawkeye finale?" The best part is Tom Spider still bragging about being an Avenger to 2 people who have no idea what an Avenger is. It fits the character so perfectly. Also the reactions as well, Tobey Spider being the objective one and Andrew Spider being the curious in awe one ("are you in a band?")

It might be a cop out, but Endgame, Loki and "What if" established that every timeline exists and deviations just create new universes so I think the villains were put back in different realities while Tobey and Andrew just went back to their original ones. Now Ock and Norman still dying is a possibility and I'm fine with that too. The point was that Tom wanted to use all of his resources to try and help them. With all of that said, I would never say the movie was perfect and if the plot felt pointless I can understand that, but I think they did a good job making it personal for Tom's Peter. Edited because I don't want to double post: I'm ultimately glad they didn't say or show anything about what happened in Andrew and Tobey's universe. I would have loved to know, but I think keeping it vague let's everyone speculate their own conclusions. People would probably be upset with anything they said. My only disappointment was that they should of had a scene of Andrew meeting his own MJ which would have been hopeful for him and show that Tom will eventually meet back up with his friends because Spider-Man always needs an MJ.

47:44 Guys I get what you're saying, but also that's literally something that always happens to Spiderman. A selfish act leads to the death of a loved one, which is formative in Peter Parker becoming the hero who wants to help and save everybody. The Tobester lets the robber free, who then shoots Uncle Ben. Same as Garfield's, who also having asked Gwen Stacey to stay with him leads to her death. It's stupid, but it's also the most Spiderman thing ever for Holland's version try to revert something for selfish reasons, leading to the death of someone he loves.

From what the villains said about the moment before they were taken from their universe, it seems like they were all taken at points where the situation was still salvageable. Like Otto said he had his hand around Peter's neck, which means it's before he turned good in Spider-Man 2 and chose to sacrifice himself, so there may have been time to turn off the sun machine without it overloading and him still surviving. Also they do acknowledge that not all of the villains will die. All Sandman wants to do the entire movie is go back home to see his daughter.

I think I rationalize May's logic by saying that the "great power" thing is very literal. I mean people without powers would not try and save those villains obviously, but he is Spider-man and has all those powers, so he has a chance to save those villains so he at least has to try. Also I don't think its a coincidence that we get Kingpin and Daredevil in the MCU within a week and then see the Rockefeller center during Christmas time at the end of Spider-man, where Hawkeye is also set.
@williamkrause5585

The way I see it is Peter was right to try the spell because his identity being public was hurting those close to him, and in reality the stuff they experienced was only the beginning. Those consequences came from him being too cavalier with his identity in the first place (Mysterio, ect). But Aunt May didn’t die because he tried to reverse everything, she died because he messed up the spell wanting the people close to him to still know. So the lesson he ultimately learned (which I have been dying for him to learn from the beginning) is that those close to him who know his identity will always be in danger. With great power comes great responsibility is about more than just using your power to help people, it’s also about keeping those close to you safe, even and especially if that means keeping your identity a secret from them. And as far as why his identity is a big deal even when a lot of heroes have public identities in the mcu is that A) Spiderman’s secret identity is a key part of who he is for the reasons I just mentioned and many others, and B) He honestly simply just has more ruthless villains than anyone else who will not hesitate to make it personal and hurt those he loves. In the comics other superheroes had public identities while Spiderman didn’t, but that doesn’t mean that he should or that it’s even the smart thing to do. That’s my opinion

People say the movie needs the nostalgia factor to be an enjoyable experience, and yet my girlfriend who had only watched the Sam Raimi version recently and didn't even see Andrew's Spider-Man absolutely loved it and was almost as excited as me. I think the nostalgia was used in a very respectful way and made sense in the context of the plot, not only that but I think it was instrumental to further Peter's character.

That's the best and worst thing about the MCU. It requires a lot of knowledge to fully appreciate it, but very few franchises can even come close to having a world people love and care about so I think it's good that they aren't worried about alienating people. Not to mention the money shows that people are more than fine with it.

They could have remedied the strange plot hole by having the spell in an book or something that Strange shows Peter but doesn’t let him use due to the inherent risk. Peter then steals the spell and attempts to do it himself with Ned. That way Strange comes off as less reckless and acts as a set up/pay off.

That’s a great idea, I think the way they did it in the movie makes it feel like it’s more doctor strangers fault, since he’s the adult and magic expert, which messes with the messaging. It’d help drive home the whole responsibility lesson, that May died as a result of a selfish action and now he has to selflessly reverse that action by asking for the second spell. That said, I don’t think it’s entirely out of character for this doctor strange, he seems to have kept quite a bit of his ego. Maybe he should’ve learned a lesson about responsibility too

That JMS nugget makes a lot of sense since he spent years at the beginning of his run getting Peter and MJ back together and into a much better and developed relationship when they were estranged from the 90's. His entire run was transitioning Peter into an adult and it never made sense for JMS to want to tear things back like OMD did.

I feel there was a slight missed opportunity, (SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT) they could have had a low tier villain like Shocker from Homecoming show up and attack Peter/MJ/Ned near the start, which would cement how dangerous it is that people now who he is, MIT would have more grounds for not wanting him at the school if he is indeed a danger to the school just by being there, plus would give Dr Strange a better reason to do the spell to protect Peter, and also add more weight to Peters decision to not re-friend Ned/MJ at the end of the movie to keep them safe As you guys said this was a fun ass movie but I do feel like some sloppy writing was given a pass because of the fan service/nostalgia factor

While I agree with Mason that there were a ton of other options they could have done before breaking the universe, I think it was already established how dangerous it was for his identity to be out. There was mass hysteria and JJ was constantly tracking him and not to mention the brick. I think more villains would have been made it even more bloated.

@@Kango234 Perhaps yeah, though I don't see it as a 15 minute fight scene or anything, just a quick interaction where someone shows up at MJ's work or something while the trio are just hanging out, or maybe at his high school? There was a big sidelining of the secondary characters in this film, Betty Brant/Flash etc so one more scene with them in the school would have been nice

To me that takes away something fundamental about the story, Peter makes the decision rashly as Strange puts it to make his life less "messy", this is his version of letting the robbers get away who kill Uncle Ben. This would make the characters decisions more rational from an outsiders point of view but I think it's a better story the way it is. Strange clearly has affection for Peter, which is why he considers doing the spell, plus it would have all gone without a hitch had Peter not continued to alter the conditions. Even after that though, the situation could have been resolved easily, the villains could have all been thrown back to their respective universes, but it's further complicated by Peter's compassion, and the way May inspires him.

@@R_A120 I don't know, he's making an effort with Peter at the start, he convinces Wong by saying "hasn't he been through enough", he only starts being actively cold with Peter after he gets frustrated with him during the spell. He says he forgets that he's "just a kid". At the end when he comes back through the portal he seems proud that Peter's plan is actually working.

You guys are the best I've been looking forward to this podcast 😁😁 I will say I disagree about the bridge fight because I think the pacing and intensity of it was a lot more like I expect between those two. IMO, spidey is supposed to move with that weightless feeling and doc oc typically tries to win with overwhelming force and battlefield confusion. I can totally see your opinion of it as well, especially regarding the stakes of it all. It just worked great for me! Can't really argue with any of your other points other than to say I'll allow to have this movie lmao

One thing I do love about these Marvel movies' Dr. Strange. He isn't just "Dr. Strange". He is still directly connected to the place and people who taught him magic and, presumably, his magical class mates. They're an organization, which makes much more sense than just "you sorcerer supreme now, go do your own thing on your own lol" the comics often have. Spoilers: I totally agree that they're both making it possible for Sony to take Spider-Man in isolation in the future if that is how they decide to move forward and moving Peter into young adult territory. Both by the loss of all his parental figures and he just has to do it all on his own now, as well as the actual age and environment (he is college age and presumably out of high school now). And of course the very decision he makes at the end, plenty of adults would botch that, but he grew the fuck up and did it. Fun thing, Tom's Peter did kill the being that killed aunt May, because that was the Goblin, not Norman, and when he cures Norman, the Goblin is effectively destroyed. Also, YES. This was a much better One More Day than One More Day. Peter fucking up then sacrificing his personal life for others because he logics the problem's solution and is willing to sacrifice (because in the end Peter thought of the solution, Strange just gave him the basic info and had the knowledge to judge if the proposal would work), that is a much more spider-man way of ending his relationship than "deal with the wanna be devil".

I understand the whole nostalgia bit but it could have easily not worked as well as it did and they pulled it off very well. The movie had great action(some of the best Spidey action weve seen), good emotional moments and tension, good performances, and there were a lot of great shots in this very well directed. And yeah prob the biggest criticism is prob the plot. Yeah it’s is contrived and kinda hand wavy in some parts but it facilitated this great thing that was a big moment for a lot of peoples lives especially with what we’ve gone though the last two years. And honestly even if Tobey and Andrew weren’t in it I think it still would have been a great movie. Like if we just got Tom fighting those villains. Tom and his supporting cast did well and the villains were all good. Excited to see where this goes next. Hopefully Jon Watts comes back. See

I really think this movie was amazing, but maybe not spectacular. In execution and audacity. They basically pulled "A wizard did it!" to get Spider-man where he needed to be and extricate himself from his greater MCU baggage. Like his six movie appearances now serve as some kinda extended prequel/origin. And all the little things like various character interactions like the webbing convos and Otto holding an Arc reactor with Tobey and basically seeing his life's work that cost him his wife right there. Between that and the nanotech, Stark would be a real annoyance to even "normal" mad scientists. I think his digital footprint and all records had to be removed, there is no way a kid his age would be paying for coffee with cash otherwise.
