SPOILERY SPOILERS This is purely my own head canon, but I think Thanos was holding back from using too much of the Infinity Stones' power because he was afraid if he did it too much, it would break the Gauntlet, and his ability to wield the stones all together for his big task. Remember after the big finger snap, the Gauntlet looked wrecked, from what I'm guessing was using too much power at once. The stones are infinite, but any material vessel holding them is not. That's why I also think Strombreaker was able to break through the big Rainbow Beam at the end. It was made in the same forge as the Gauntlet, and thus could channel as much energy as the Gauntlet could without the latter breaking. Thanos could have used more energy in the beam to deflect or destroy the hammer-axe, but again, he held back because he was afraid of wrecking the Gauntlet.

Yeah that makes sense. I thought Thanos could have easily avoided Stormbreaker, by using the reality stone and turning it into bubbles, or use the space stone and send it light years away from earth or use the time stone and turn it into a magic block, or ... well you see where I'm going with this. He could have used one stone instead of all of them to create the rainbow beam to win against Thor. I chose to explain this as Thanos is a novice with the Gauntlet and the stones. And having all the stones was really hard to handle. Most people in the MCU can barely hold on to one stone, so I imagine its really difficult and taxing to hold all of them at once.

Hey! Just wanted to comment on your bit about Thanos not using the stones to just vaporize all his enemies and so forth(1:00:30). But I didn't see him as THAT type of villain. I thought it was very clear that he didn't want to brutally murder people, he isn't a mindless killer. In the movie when he is explaining his intentions to Tony, he mentions that "One snap and half of existence is gone instantly..." as being "merciful". He isn't seeking a violent war where he is deciding who to kill and who to be alive. Thanos explains further that he is trying to preserve existence and recounts the events that happened to his home planet. Even at the ending scene, there seems to be a possible trace of questioning on his face, perhaps wondering if should have done it? I thought this could be possible because in the prior scene, Thanos tells child Gamora that it "Cost Everything" to complete his mission. Anyway, before I ramble out of control. Overall, I saw Thanos as a more calculated and philosophical villain. Besides the whole genocide part, his intentions for uniting the stones wasn't for violence itself, but instant, painless, population control. At least that was my perspective! Great Podcast!

Gipsy Eureka Idk, I got the vibe he killed anyone who he thought would be a problem for his plan in the future. He let Thor go but he thought Loki would just keep trying to assassinate him perhaps. He also said he respected Tony which implies he was only going to kill him because he thought he had to to get the time stone.

For your Easter Eggs video I thought I'd point one out that most people would miss unless they are very familiar with Norse Mythology, In the story of how Mjölnir was crafted, the forge could not be kept hot enough during the forging thus the handle was too short only fitting one hand rather than two which meant Thor was the only God strong enough to use it (most likely where marvel got the "Worthy" idea from) anyway, when the new hammer in this movie is made and the handle is missing I'm sure it's a reference to that part of the mythology. Also I reckon Groot is a part of Yggdrasil.

Logan Waite I think you have a point but honestly it didn't even land for me the first time I saw it in the trailer. Tom was too stiff and Ben's reaction was very Adam Sandler-esque. In the movie, Tom was really awkward and Ben seemed directly pissed by his innocence, which both worked so much better for me. Cheers xoxo

The reason I think Thanos didn’t just turn everyone into bubbles or demolish all of the avengers was because he’s an honorable fighter and respects a good competitor who can stand against him in battle. Like in the first 5 mins when Ebony Maw says “Let him have his fun.” I think that line sort of represents Thanos throughout every fight.

Not to counter nitpick, but on the question of why they didn't just cut off Thanos's arm when they were going for the gauntlet--it was a mere punch from Starlord that woke him up from the trance he was put in, so unless that slicing of the arm was super quick the assumed pain of it would have popped him right out of the trance and they'd be in the predicament they found themselves in due to the above mentioned Starlord fail. Also it's a Marvel movie, so like any moderately rated move they're not just going to go full limits of anyone's powers. I mean, we've seen so many fights that end up as punching when characters in theory have weapons that should be killing or maiming with ease.

my theory is that they're saving the chopping of the arm off for avengers 4. Chopping off arms happens a lot in the mcu (neat list of them here www.telltalesonline.com/24662/marvel-star-wars-easter-eggs/) so it would be fitting to end off the biggest villain like that.

It wasnt the pain from the punch that woke him up. It was like the second or third punch hit mantis in the hand and she released both her hands from thanos head, she even said "ouch" (or something like that). As soon as she did that, he woke up.

Thanos was already on his path since before Gamora was born ... he was already making his way planet to planet wiping out half a civilization and he already saw that his way was helping at times, so he thinks his way is fine and would work on a larger scale... people have probably already tried to talk him out or fight him to stop and he's always won (hence why he is still alive). so no amount of talking would help, since he has been doing it for so long, and is fixated on that goal of balance.

Always figured he never embraced the full destructive power of the guantlet while battling heroes was he wanted the 'fair', unbiased snapping finger move to ultimately make those decisions. It plays more into his belief he's not ultimately a villain as others may claim or think, which he still ultimately is when you consider it, but after all he is fairly unhinged so obviously doesn't see it thataway. Hell he doesn't even really despise any of the heroes enough it seemed, aside from calling Spider-Man insect that one time he's almost always handing out compliments or tenderly patting their heads with earnest sympathy.

I love that theory at the end. You even made the point that why didn't Thanos just double the resources of the universe? What if he did, but he did it by creating a second parallel universe and that's where half of all life went. The next movie could be the fallout of that and both sides trying to find a way to put the universe back together. Imagine how cool it would be if the next movie opens with Spiderman and strange grieving the loss of Ironman. People would be so wonderfully confused!

I think that because they killed off basically all the new characters and the ones who are still alive are basically all old characters, that they might do a switch. Like sacrificing the old avengers for the ones that died. Both reversing the effects and yet still not removing the impact and would be a good way to counter cap's declaration of not "trading lives"

Peter Quill stands alone against Thanos on Nowhere, points a gun at him, even calls him rude names, but in the end he does the Big Dissolve. So there's another flaw in that theory.

Personally, I got everything I wanted from this movie. Thanos was not a jokey jobber, he was a real threat. This had jokes, but wasn't bogged down by them. The different teams had great interactions. There were stakes. Sure many of those deaths will be undone but so what. Death is meaningless in comic worlds. I believe Loki and Gamora are dead dead, but Thanos will sacrifice himself to bring her back. They made him do bad things but didn't straight make him mustache twirling. I even got Red Skull. I imagine that when all is said and done Thanos will have a turn towards good, and die to bring Gamora back. Finally being a father to her. And with him gone and universe minor rebooted...a big threat is gone from the universe, opening it to other BIGGER threats, if you catch my planet eating.

I am not an expert in the comic source material, but I did look up some of this stuff prior to seeing the movie. How the movie has gone against all expectations and predictions, I actually don't see the way forward. I know that they will resolve it and I think it will be a bit more of an uplifting ending in the next one (not necessarily happy), but I don't know how they're going to resolve it even if I know all the pieces still on the board (or ones that has yet to be played). To be frank, I love that about this movie. I definitely felt Marvel fatigue in the last bunch of movies (even though I enjoyed them). This surprise is great.

So, it's fun listening to this 5 years late and hearing your predictions. Who is going to be alive after Avengers 4? Is Gamora dead or alive? Well, yes. One of the guys said, "It wouldn't be a fun Gardians 3 if Peter Quill is just grieving a dead Gamora." Which makes perfect sense and I would have agreed with at the time. Boy did the Russo bros and then James Gunn have surprises for us!

With the whole Thanos power level thing, I think there is a logical explanation. He has the gauntlet that gives him control over all the stones attached to it, but he still needs to actively use that power. On Titan when everyone is beating him, I don't think he has the time to just turn everyone into spaghetti. I think there are limitation to the abilities because he is still just a dude who is controlling powers he should not be.

I wonder, is the Gauntlet itself made specifically out of Uru? I suspect that it's the weakest part and can maybe only handle so much energy at a given time from the combined stones. It seemed to stay intact while wielded several stones at a time, but with the 6-stone-snap, it looked to have taken some real damage. Maybe the gauntlet (housing unit) for the stones will be what the heroes can target and cause the stones to leave Thanos' grasp. Maybe a bunch of them will wield the stones as a group to undo the end of Infinity War.
@johnreynolds7996

Just something to keep in mind: Thanos' gauntlet looked wrecked after he snapped his fingers so apparently the stones are infinitely powerful, but the gauntlet isn't. But note that there was another gauntlet on Nidavellir, and both Rocket and Thor know about it. So maybe - just maybe - while Thanos still possesses of all the stones he no longer has the means to make full use of all that infinite power. It's no big deal for the Avengers to get the other-handed-gauntlet, but it's useless without those stones. So the chase will be on, only this time in reverse.

Avengers 4 predictions: Vision integrated with the Soul Stone and collected the 'dusted' Avengers bringing them to the Necropolis from Black Panther. Strange (time), Scarlet Witch/Vision (mind), Drax/Mantis (reality), Star Lord (power), Gamora (soul) and Loki (space) each lead a team to control the stones from within. The remaining Avengers and Cap Marvel regroup on Earth, then take the fight to Thanos. And because Cap America had so little screen time in IW, he'll be the lead and make the sacrifice to save the team trapped in the Soul Stone. Also, Pepper is pregnant, she lied to Tony in the park and that's why she was so adamant for him not to leave. P.S. There will 100% be a moment when someone says, "Cap" then both Steve and Carol turn and say, "What?"

**SPOILER ALERT** The reason why that was the final outcome of who died/lived is because in the sequel, in order to bring balance or something, those who are brought back must be replaced with another life kinda like Gamora and the soul stone trade. Those who will take the place of the dead, are the ones who's career with Marvel ends in Infinity War 2 and those who are brought back from death are the ones that are moving forward with Marvel. Panther Strange Spidey Bucky Falcon Guardians Wanda ^ all have sequels or likely to stay on for phase 4. Stark Captain Widow Thor Banner Rhodes ^ most likely to make their final appearance in Infinity War Pt. 2. Definitely for Stark and Captain. That's my theory anyway.

I agree with Mason that Thanos will see the error of his ways (after a bunch of fighting). He will see the ends didn't justify the means and that pain he caused with others and himself are just too much. I feel like Gamora is key to this. He caused himself pain by killing her and he will see that others cared for her as well #starlorddidnothingwrong. He will see that pain he caused himself is the same pain that everyone else if feeling around the universe. If it was just him having to deal with the loss it would fine, but not if its everyone else. He will basically learn empathy (of course after a bunch of action).

Thanos fries the Infinity Gauntlet when he snaps his fingers, it looks destroyed, cracked and the stones are no longer glowing, in the sequel he will need another gauntlet in order to use the stones again, that will give the avengers the perfect opportunity to attack and attempt to separate the stones and possibly use one against him.
