Thanks for making this quick video about this, hopefully this can be addressed in a Nikon firmware update. I believe this problem ( or a very similar one) was reported in forums regarding the Nikon Z8 as well.

Oh yeah, huh. It's just a very short black out and I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out. I use the monitor closed off all the time because I don't want to shoot with glasses on!

I'm a Canon fan (last 20 years) and currently using R5 and R6mk2. Lack of F1.4 prime lenses sent me to Sony so I had a 7A4 for a year in parallel to my Canons. I also had an A73 before which I sold after 6 months. I did not enjoy using the Sony so sold it after a year. Biggest issue handling/enjoyment and constant dust on the sensor. So now I'm loving the ZF look and thinking of getting one since I can use it with Sony F1.4 lenses. How is the dust issue with the ZF. My Canons rarely need sensor cleaning. My R5 no dust spots over 2 years and my R6mk2 needed a sensor blow twice. Thank you. This is strictly a hobby for me.

Not sure if this was a deliberate design by Nikon to make the Zf feel like a film camera with shutter blackout when the shutter is triggered, but the more I think about it the more it seems to be.

Nikon does have 2 settings related to blackout. Release timing indicator causes blackout at some shutter speeds, Also the flicker reduction causes blackout. Probably worth playing with those settings just to see.

Sounds like a bug. There's probably no setting related to that, so it's just a matter of getting Nikon's attention. edit: while we're talking about bugs, is it just me or is the image preview in the z6ii viewfinder different from the back screen? The shadows seem lifted in the viewfinder but the back screen seems correct

I never have the auto playback turned on, so I never would have noticed this. Hopefully Nikon will issue a firmware update to get rid of the problem. I just got a Zf a week ago, so I'll have plenty of time to discover any other bugs it might have.

Yes, I've had this problem and another more concerning problem. I use the Zf primarily for manual shooting, so using older Nikon SLR lenses with the adapter on it. There is no consistent pattern but sometimes when shooting, the camera freezes up. I turn it off and turn it back on again only to get an error message telling me that the shutter is open and I should fire the shutter and turn it off. Once I do that and keep shooting I get yet another message about it not being able to write to the card! I'm still within my return window so probably going to send it back and see if I can wait until they get the kinks out. I went against my own policy when I bought this camera of never buying straight out of the gate. I normally wait a couple of years after a new camera is on the market.

Bug. Needs a fix in firmware. You made the right checks. It means the testing of the firmware was not done for all possible configuration combinations. With Monitor: 2,100,000 Dot, eVF: 3,690,000 Dot, the eVF has 76% more dots, and this could have been a bandwidth issue in the motherboard, except you already demonstrated it is not. With the flip of the rear screen the problem in the eVF disappears.

I just checked, I have the same issue. (Normally I have image review off and just speed-mash the playback button, so I didn't notice--but one of the advantages of the faster processor was supposed to be faster image review, so it's unfortunate) I've found some other bugs, the most concerning of which is that on my 24-70 f/4, it'll sometimes become unable to focus to infinity until I reboot. Not sure why that happens but it only happens on the Zf.

To be honest, i find that very short blackout sort of helpful in signalling to my garbage brain that what i am now looking at is instant playback and not the live scene. I kind of wish for a similar blackout "flash" when the instant playback is over (I know of course that i can cut the instant playback short by touching the release button, or shut the function off altogether). But i can see why this might be annoying for most other users, and it does look like a bug or an oversight that deserves a firmware fix. Not a big deal though.

The Zf is buggy , I dont see a blackout sometimes with physical shutter, the is the f13 setting which I not really working .

Speaking of strange bugs. I had it two times that my Z7ii got stuck on one specific focus mode. Battery pull didn't help. Going into the menue and disabling that focus mode all together -> reboot camera did the trick. It could be enabled again afterwards.

I remember a Nikon P2000 compact I had once. Took it to an airshow, selected manual focus but it still attempted to focus before shooting. Missed loads of shots. Contacted Nikon and they basically said "Put the camera on MF 👍" and closed the technical ticket. Idiots! I had hinted that it was a firmware issue but they didn't understand. Contacted Amazon (who did understand). Returned the camera for a full refund.

Change the review to monitor only.

Expect this to be fixed in a firmware update.

Another issue I ran into when I reviewed the Zf is that you can't make any changes to the camera with the command dials (Apreture Priority) when the screen is flipped to "vlog" style for filming. So annoying you have to flip it around and then back to update ISO, Apreture, etc.

I don’t notice the blackout , but then again I don’t use the review option. I think you may have a faulty unit or are focusing too much on a minor issue .

Not sure why you’d have the screen closed ever except transport. But either way most likely a firmware bug.

It may be a problem with the ribbon cable that sends data in and out of the camera to the screen. Maybe poor a cable from a new source or a manufacturing problem. Thanks to all the early adopters for finding issues the rest of us hopefully will miss out on. 😋
