Who doesn't love looking at weird, totally nonfunctional vehicle designs? I'm known for doing this with fictional tanks, but for this video I figured I'd take a look at actual tank prototypes / designs that are pretty strange. In this video I'll take a look at the Hen and Chick, Object 490, ELKE, and TV-8.
Check the channel "About" section for the link to the creator of my profile picture.
Songs used (in order from first to last):
WH40K Mechanicus - Dance of the Crpytek

What would a tank designed to operate on the moon be like, given that there's no air for internal combustion or cooling, very low gravity, and a weak, cratered regolith surface that provides concealment more than cover? What sort of ammunition and weapons would be used on the moon?

Funnily enough, Obj 490 got Evgeny fired from KMDB (it's more complicated than that TBF). The video author says it had to do with cost but that's not true, it was mostly because the tank was seen as inferior in gun depression and a sort of "ultimate T-80" (i.e. biggest gun in smallest/shortest package) by the Armor Directorate [the Soviet equivalent of the American Tank and Automotive Command]. The Soviet Army at this point (~1980) was no longer interested in reducing crew sizes (they had just finished a human factors study that showed that T-64 was much harder to maintain with three crewmen than T-62 was) or the size of the tank: they were willing to accept a bigger tank if it meant it would be easier to maintain with conscript crews. 490 had two crewmen and the division of labor in combat was unknown (according to the Armor Directorate, it would have been unsatisfactory or something) while maintenance would have been even harder. His colleagues tank, Obj 490A, was much more conventional in layout, had a "conventional" three-man crew, and had actually usable gun depression. 490A looked like a cross between the US Army's Stryker MGS and the T-80, eventually became Boxer, which became the T-95, which became the Ukrainian main battle tank prototype Nona, which drove around some field in Ukraine in 2001-2002 and shot about 40 rounds of 152mm. Nona still lives at KMDB IIRC and a lot of the technology from that tank was used in BM-Oplot. Namely the ERA, engine vectronics, and optronics. Regardless, the human factors won, and that's why 490A got chosen over 490. So ultimately it came down to ergonomics and the ability of the crew to fight in combat, not cost. The Soviets would have thrown any amount of money at the tank at this point. The collapse didn't begin in earnest until around 1986 anyway. There's a book by one of the engineers involved in 490 called The Last Charge of the Soviet Tank Engineers (or similar) that talks about it. In it, Evgeny Morozov comes off as a dick and actively tries to sabotage the 490A by promoting his 490 internally, against the wishes of both the Armor Directorate and his actual boss, and eventually gets fired for it. The engineer who wrote the book lives in Kharkiv now and last I heard he's still salty as hell that Putin hasn't liberated him from the Ukrainian Maiden Nazis or something, but he'd be in his late 80's or something now so he might be dead.

@@SecuR0M"no longer interested in reducing crew sizes" but the soviets had a separate maintenance platoon in every battalion, a separate maintenance company in every regiment and a separate maintenance battalion in every division, which performed routine and front line vehicle maintenance, the size of the vehicle's crew shouldn't and didn't matter to the soviets for vehicle maintenance. source: Soviet Army Operations, United States. Army Intelligence and Threat Analysis Center, The Center, 1983. which itself sited the 1976 soviet army operations manual unless this changed (which i have not seen so far, but i am no expert) it seems unlikely they would consider it an issue. then again internal space being smaller would hamper separate maintenance crews aswell. also the Object 477A1 'Nota' was a joint Ukrainian-Russian Fed project not just a Ukrainian one. which i think is what you mean by 'Nona' (which was a soviet airborne vehicle) and the T-95 (object 195) is an unrelated project [in terms of design] designed by Uralvagonzavod (Designers of T-72 and T-62) not Kharkov (Designers of T-64, and object 490A and object 477)

Have you considered talking about the Lowe? It’s a very interesting German design, in both its look and its story. The fact it went through so many redesigns (VK.70-01, VK.72-01k, etc), and evidently got far enough in its design process that it was given the Panzer VII designation seems like a cool story to tell.

Another issue that the 490B (that specific model you showed in the vid as there were other designs of the 490 that looked vastly different and more akin to traditional tank design) was outside of hulldown, the tanks gun had very very poor elevation that would make it difficult to shokt a target down range and was unable fo shoot at targets behind it

Huh! Now I know where Hasbro came up with the idea for the Cobra Maggot; The Hen & Chick concept from the Astron Project! They simplified it a bit but you can see it's influence on the toy maker's design. The Elke's gun design(?) definitely played a role on the G.I. hey can you please cover the Mobile tank units from Universal Century Gundam like the Hildolfr, Guntank( all one year war variants), Loto and Guntank R44?

You should cover the Rhino tank from GTA. Since the appearance of the tank varies depending on the game, you should cover it in multiple videos.

About the Soviet prototype. It was only suggestion of the new tank construction (I mean place of crew etc). It was even not a prototype, the model used often was just a maket, only approximate design. Also should notice, soviet engineers tried to increase survivability not by low profile, they tried to do this by increasing frontal armor (on the time of creation almost every soviet tank was very well armored), by same reason the ammunition storage placed inside turret, as it most protected place inside the tank, they tried to not placing ammunition in other places, due to this vulnerability, thing they tried to avoid we can see on Leopard 1/2 tanks where half of ammunition in hull, and half beyond poorly protect turret side. The low profile needed to soviets for another reason, for strategic mobility, i.e ability to fast delivering of tanks on vast ranges (actual problem to Russia). For this, a tank should have little weight without losing protection, a low profile it's very effective method to gain this result. In other hand, tanks became to small, and constructors forced replace one crew member with autoloader.

Actually didn't know about the Hen and Chick, but it reminds me a lot of the Superheavy Semi-Trailer Tank that was designed in 1945 Another fun prototype like these is the VTS1 built by the German army, which actually is still around

I Really love the Obj490B because it showed me that some “SF like” design actually works in reality. In Gundam series there is a tracked mecha looks like it called Guncannon.

TV-8 looks like it's about to evolve into a Martian tripod. Speaking of which... what is your opinion on Martian Tripod-style mech designs? Overly tall with narrow but stiff and nearly inert spindles for the lower legs, big feet that are not really propulsive but mostly to reduce ground pressure, very large height, and all of the armor concentrated at the turret/hull and hip areas?

There's that prototype of an anti-air vehicle made by Russia that I kept forgetting the name of much to my dismay. It's basically a tank with its main gun removed and with heavy machine guns placed on the side of the turrets.
