Weird tool basics: Socket Angle Adapter (a.k.a. Gearless Angle Drive)

The basics of an unusual socket angle adapter, or as the maker calls it, a Gearless Angle Drive.
It has its occasional uses, but it's mostly just a really weird tool that is a practical (sorta) application of the Hobson's Joint.

I bought one of these for basically the same reason haha. I'm still really surprised by how smoothly they rotate, when I bought it I was sure that it would bind frequently and be more of a hassle than anything.

I use Chrome sockets with my impact gun and all is well 8 years in working every day. I will immediately use an impact on it

Interesting thing about these is it appears that more than 1 can be used together for some interesting angle of attacks. I know 2 universal joints can't be used together, but these seem rigid enough to work in conjunction. Maybe I'll buy 4 and make a turning box 😅. Thanks for the video!

I’ve never owned one of these. It seems like a ratchet would fit anywhere that thing would fit.

The occasions I’ve used it are where a ratchet fits but doesn’t have the room to actually rotate the socket.

I could have used this just this past month. Many times, doing a particular job, I have been great full to have a ratchet with a lot of teeth, but have still had to either try to get my fingers in to stop the socket from rotating backward. Just the knurled end would have helped me out. It is an interesting mechanism.

This was a great video, you deserve many more subscribers than you currently have. One thing I would recommend trying to mitigate is the mic picking up your breathing and swallowing sounds but otherwise keep up the content. Definitely turning all notifications on foe your channel man👍

I used it on a 2008 Silverado the oil galley plug was on the side of the engine i was under it and needed an allen to go up and 90 degrees right to get that thing out of there when you find the perfect scenario for this tool it’s invaluable

Very much so, Thinking of using one for a DYS Table saw lift shaft. doesn't need to be terribly strong. Unfortunately, they are about $20... too much !!!

I can think of a couple of times that I've used it to reach around crap - once in a Mini engine bay and once up under a dashboard. Nothing high torque. Most of the time, I just get it out to show someone how weird it is.

The friction must create heat. How do you press against it with hand tools?

It's not for use with pneumatic/electric tools (from the manufacturer's instructions) -- unless you're *really* fast with a ratchet, I don't think you'll be generating a damaging amount of heat.

Could probably be pretty handy on an Chrysler 300 thermostat But I wonder how much force you could put on it before it gives

The manufacturer says it's ANSI rated. I don't know if I would want to use it to break the thermostat nut loose with it, but it would certainly work for everything past breaking it loose and then when reinstalling, getting it snug for torquing.

Most important thing for any real mechanic is how accurate would the result be if it was used to torque something to spec? Probably not very, but even gear driven angle drives can fool you at times.

“¯\_(ツ)_/¯“ You (probably) don't want to look at my (often) beat-up hands, and when I _am_ showing greasy/dirty tools, I don't want to have to wash my hands before touching the camera or pressing "stop" on the recorder or whatever. So, I just went with consistency and a decent contrast with the glove color.

They have lots of warnings about not using it with an impact, I can’t imagine anyone thinking that’s a good idea. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 This KZfaqr must be an engineer because he clearly doesn’t know how tradesmen work in the field. Most of us don’t bother to read warnings, the ones that do, rarely observe them.

Just buy good tools not craftsman I have universals from both snap-on matco that go full 90

They can all flop to 90 degrees, but there's no way they can operate at 90 degrees. Lower-buck brands (craftsman included on that list) start to bind around 50 degrees or so. Better brands (snap-on, matco, etc) might get you to 60 degrees at most before binding.
