This 2017 Honda CRV has been killing it's battery over 3 days ever since the owner bought it a year ago.
Battery has been replaced TWICE, so the issue is still present.
However, I'm having problems reproducing the customer complaint...car seems to go to sleep normally every time.
WHAT TO DO?

Pausing the video halfway to mention, this so far is mirroring the parasitic draw on a Honda Accord I was working on. That same "back up" fuse had power draw on it. I eventually traced it back to the power window master switch. I called it on the switch but couldn't find a new one. Then I decided to check it inputs.... Turns out the door key switch was stuck in the lock or unlock position keeping the window switch from going to sleep. After opening the door I found the screw holding the switch had backed out and the switch came off when the lock cylinder was turned causing it to always be switched. Before you call a module be sure to check its inputs.

@@mattbrown5511 to be honest, other than the L15 engines, they still are very reliable. The main factor in play is the maintenance that people refuse to do, and that carries over to all manufacturers. Like I said, I am a dealer tech and I see a lot of new generation Hondas already hitting 200-250k miles and going strong. The ones that struggle seem to be those that wait until 8-10k miles between oil changes, never change trans fluid, don’t believe in alignments, and don’t see the importance of valve adjustments (and timing belts for v6).

If you only have an amp clamp and are measuring small currents, find yourself a long wire with alligator clips. Use that as an extension to the battery cable, and give it as many wraps as you can around one arm of the amp clamp. This will amplify the current the amp clamp is measuring. The actual current is whatever the meter says divided by the number of times the wire passes through the center of the clamp.

Well Done, Ivan! Stick a fork in that Honda! 👏👏👏 Behavioral Alteration: I set parking brake right after shifting to PARK, before I take my foot off the brake pedal. That way it leaves the torque placed on the wheels with the parking brake applied, instead of loading that onto the transmission/transaxle. for some reason I believe it saves the drivetrain from being bound up by tension of torque on the wheels, axles, bearings, etc. That's the logic, anyway, and I've done it that way all my driving life. Not sure why... 🤦‍♂ If this is not the case for a '21 Hyundai Tucson Value, tell me now! 🤣🤣🤣

Our son has a 2019 CR-V. He was having the battery run down over a few days. I don't know how he figured it out, definitely without using a meter, but he somehow traced it to having some food crumbs lodged in the parking brake switch! Our 2021 CR-V has the same exposed parking brake switch.

I have a 2017 Honda CR-V & I am having this exact issue! I have had the battery replaced about 5 times & I have taken it to the dealership on multiple occasions. They would complete a thorough diagnostic; checking the charging system & never could find an issue. It would aggravate me because I know there was an issue. I would have to carry around a jump box within my car just so that I could start the car when the new battery would start to drain, (which took around 7-8 months). I am going to the dealership on Tuesday & giving them this information. I want this issue resolved!

My wife and I own a 2017 and a 2019 CRV Touring trim level Honda's. On cold days in SC the "infotainment system" sometimes would not boot up when starting the cars. The local Honda dealer is typical of most Honda dealers; they gave us a lot of run around and grief. They tried "reprogramming" the units but we still had occasional booting issues, which required restarting the cars. And I made sure they gave our Honda's extra attention before the original factory warranty ran out. The Honda battery, which is made by Jonson Controls, were also being replaced by me or the dealership, frequently. So, I put NAPA Group 35 batteries in both cars and haven't had any issues since. My theory is that the voltage was dropping so low over night in those smaller, less amperage batteries causing the systems to go into a deep sleep to save the battery. Honda puts Group 35 batteries in vehicles sold in Canada and most northern states. Using a Group 35 battery with the higher amperage may solve some of the module issues. Just make sure the battery fits the battery tray and is not too tall. The electrical system is going to draw only what is needs and there will be plenty of reserve.

Modules, modules, modules...I thought the idea behind modules was to simplify - not to complicate! It's time to go back to simplifying these computerized monsters before NO ONE can fix them. It's ironic the last line of defense against this complication is a college-educated engineer working from home. A further irony is that older mechanics are retiring, rendering simpler cars unable to be repaired as well because the younger guys have no experience with them. Just cut the number of electronic doodads to zero and direct wire the windows, HVAC, etc. just like the old days. I dream that Toyota will one day sell a car with nothing but a fuel injection and ABS computer. That's it. I'll be first in line - and I'll be willing to pay more.

I feel deeply for the families in Lahaina, particularly the children that were safe in school and were sent to certain death - what I feel about what happened and why, I cannot say in your channel. Talk about weird - when a software bug creates a parasitic draw, that isn't even obvious, who pays for the ruined batteries and the shop time to figure it out? Should be the manufacturer! Itb is actually good you were able to find a TSB & confirm with your customer the hand brake process and were able to replicate the issue. I honestly think if the TSB were not published you would have found the issue. As we all saw, eventually it did come down to 11mA repeatedly. What a bugger of a process to create for the parasitic draw. I am amazed someone was able to determine it in the first place - it almost seems like a chance find by whoever identified how it occurs.

As I commented before. I really really do not understand, why there are not an main relay, turning off all modules, which do not need power, when car is off. There would not be an problem if an shutdown signal would be sent to CAN networks at 120 seconds or whatever and leave 60 seconds to modules turn off, before main relay turns off. You could even specify an CAN command "request to keep main power on" if really needed and then log that as informational P -code. 90% of the problem would be eliminated and if there is something left, you can find the culprit by scanning codes or checking the few always on modules. With current amount of not so great program code and cheap electronics, everything else is asking for problems. And instead of always on power for keepalive power, you can use NVRAM (non volatile ram). Even commercial passenger planes have a main battery switch, and those electronics and program code is 10-100 time more expensive compared to cars.
@major__kong
@major__kong 10 ай бұрын
One thought. That main relay becomes a failure point possibly preventing the car from starting / running. When only one module fails, it usually doesn't take down the whole car. If the master switch or relay fails in an airplane, the engine will still start and run.

Great job! I was betting on the window controls. My wife's CR-V rolls its windows down on its own, and the rain comes in on the switches. Well, it seems to roll the windows down on its own - pressing the unlock button twice and holding it the second time is what rolls down the windows. With the keys resting in the bottom of her purse and stuff on top of them, it sometimes presses the unlock button twice and holds it. As unlikely as it seems, this has happened at least 3 times.

So now even "simple" vehicles can have software bugs. I suppose it would have been nice if this vehicle supported over the air updates, and then Honda could have just pushed the update to the effected vehicles without a whole process to diagnose. Makes me wonder if later model vehicles (complex) that do not yet support OTA updates will become the most troublesome to own/operate in the out years.

Decisions have consequences, bailing folks out of their bad decisions just keeps them making bad decisions

Since when did Diehard become not a great brand? I swore by those for over 20 years when they were Sears product.

It's all of them. There's only 3 or so battery manufacturers left in North America or something like that. They're all the same battery with different branding.

Like all engineering, software engineering's first rule is "garbage in equals garbage out". That issue should have never made it past the R&D stage.

I don't mean to be insensitive, but over the last 20 years, I have forked over probably $30,000 for insurance in case a fire took away everything I owned. Maybe I should have some kind of GoFundMe thing so I can pay my next insurance bill.

Why an electronic parking brake? What’s wrong with a cable operated system? How many times have you driven home with a hydraulic system issue by using the “emergency” brake. Impossible now because you can’t engage the EBS while the car is moving.

Exactly. Electronic parking brake is a worthless piece of crap invention in my humble opinion 😆

While i fully support fundraising from individuals, i feel that the state and federal government completely dropped the ball on this one. A Katrina repeat except in a different state and conditions. Then it was announced that each family, family not each person, will get $700?! Is this a joke?!? How many billions have we given Ukraine so far and each family in HI get $700. Riiiiight

The computer garbage craze, be environmentally smart and buy a proper made car with a mechanical handbrake, the modern garbage only good for filling dumpsters with chincy parts and emptying owners savings accounts in the process lol . Hopefully TSB made this one easy, So many variable with software programming flaws it can be close to impossible nail issue efficiently from testing alone .
