Ballroom culture is about a few different things.. Vogue or Voguing was born because the girls would some times get catty and disagree or even want to fight and so Vogue was created for them to take their drama to the floor. This is where the term "Bring it to the floor" was born..

Exactly. The reason we as a community feel like family when hanging out with each other comes from the fear and fighting we had to do (and still have to do) for our rights. Younger people of the community may have it easier depending where they live but they need to know that there was a time where people needed to protect each other and still found that place within ballroom to express themselves. Lots or love and respect :-* if i ever get my sweet cheeks to new york i will visit a ball when i get the opportunity :-)

it doesn't because its not based in fact. This house is not the most iconic house.. They aren't even in the running.. They are known very well in the ballroom scene for their anti-blackness.. Which is why they aren't invited to balls in the first place.. Which is major reason you haven't seen them at an ACTUAL ball in over a decade.. They are well aware of the fact that they aren't wanted..

@Louie Mars for gay white men, none of these representations are inclusionary of gay black and brown people of color... It’s exclusionary, and is mostly gate keeped by gay white men. Where is there a drop of gay black and brown representation in any of this history you’ve presented?? I’ll wait. Lastly, gay white men love to copy the way gay black men and black women speak and act. Adopting the “independent black woman trope” and even as far as trying to white wash the things we created for our own representation like vogue and ball room culture for instance.

@Louie Mars But we might as well be. as I said previously... Gay white men take and take and take things we’ve created for ourselves and integrate it within their white gay culture and white wash the things we’ve created for ourselves. If the base of your foundation is not of your origin then the base is your blue print to build off of.

@@panicfan2006 i know some of the Xtravanganzas and was told it was created for Latinos because there was no Latino house. All the others houses were African-American. But I did notice within the last couple of years that the house let white people into the house . I’m not sure if any more blacks were allowed to come into the house but I definitely think there’s colorism involved with the house of Xtravaganza.

historically, Xtravaganza has mostly been a Latino house because back when it was founded, all of the Houses were predominantly African American houses, so Hector, the founder, wanted to create a house for Latino members of the ballroom scene.

It’s sad watching ballroom be appropriated like this. Extravaganza hasn’t been active in ACTUAL BALLROOM for damn near a decade. If you got to any REAL BALL, you WILL NOT see the house of Extravaganza there, or any house thats made primarily of just lighter skinned people or Latin people. Ballroom is, for sure, a mixture of all colors, but the predominant face you see at a ball will be BLACK! It’s like if you want something to be accepted, put the lightest face on it possible, regardless of what faces are actually flowing the blood through it. Disappointing!

Even with me not being part of the community, I will tell you: You are wrong. Many could. The male body is like a machine, that is why male tennis players play more sets than the women (I say this as a woman), that is why many ballroom dancers show incredible stamina, they throw themselves on their backs then immediately get back up in heels, do somersaults, do the duck walk etc. You can see if you watch a battle. But, bottom line, it's their choice what they do. Someone wouldn't be good at a job they hate either way, right? Different strokes for different folks. These people are creative, visionary, empathetic, understanding etc. Not everyone has to be a mechanical worker.
