I remember those old coffee machines, like a drink machine, but it brewed the coffee as you bought a cup. Press buttons for cream and sugar, and it all drains into a tiny paper cup. Unless the machine was out of cups, and your coffee fell right down the drain. Worst coffee I’ve ever drank in my life! Truly a last desperate option.

I feel like not enough people (by orders of magnitude) recognise an actual coffee machine, and think drip-filter is still acceptable after a full day of sitting on the heater plate.

More modern than talking to just a room full of people, especially for important lectures like her recent video on disliking aspects of the academic world. Reaches just way more people than just writing papers or traditional teaching

At the university where I got my undergraduate degree in physics, in the very, very old physics building, the graduate student offices were directly below student labs. So much mercury had been spilled over the years in the labs that some of the graduate students displayed symptoms of mercury poisoning.

OMG it's just like in Argentina Physics Faculty! I remember the big boxes at the entrance that were there for a long time. Legend says it was very delicate instrumental that was delivered so roughly that it was made unusable and nobody could decide what to do with them.

Observatory of University of La Plata has still to great extent historical/original interior, furniture etc - which I just admire. And those are not inconvenient to use. Modern stuff - generally yes.

This is reminiscent of my college days and visits to my physics professor’s office. Missing are the piles of interoffice envelopes stuffed with what not and the randomly piled folders papers and notes. Of course also there were books, paper cups and dirty coffee mugs. He was brilliant!

Hi Sabine! In 1997, when I was a first-semester physics student, at the small school of physics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences in the University of San Agustín of Arequipa, Perú, near to nobody wanted to become a phycisist. I remember that in the first semester classroom we where only five (of 60 freshmen) the ones that really did want to be phycisist. Even the majority of the professors never wanted to be phycisist, but they had to, because while they were students they never could get the mean grades to move to engineering's facultate. In my country, 99% of population ignores what a phycisist does nor what physics serves for. And at least 90% of people think a physicist works as a sport trainer or as a weight lifter athlete.😢
