Fantastic, I'd love to see more info on making way and all of the more complex corner cases in being driven back into and through your own troops. I've always found that to be the most complex part of warmaster (figuring out where units make way to).

Blinkering was a feature in early editions of WFB and 40k as well. A model in Rogue Trader/2nd ed will have a facing and has to target the nearest and easiest enemy model it can see. Models can turn freely though, and be cunningly turned with their backs to undesired targets. This can allow you to split fire from a squad by manipulating how many marines can see each enemy. One break they give you is to bypass enemy targets in cover. A marine will shoot at a model in the open rather than a model that is closer but in cover.

How does shooting into a brigade work? Does the whole brigade get driven back by shooting? Or does the affected unit get driven back into friendly troops? If the second point is correct, then what happens if the unit is driven back an amount of cm that is less than the depth of the battalion? These videos are invaluable, they've helped keep my rules illiteracy to a minimum lol.

Only the unit that is shot at gets driven back. Friendly units in the path of a unit driven back can make way. This may cause confusion. The video on confusion provides examples.

Funny fact about machines - in rules there is only 4, and only 2 of them can shoot - steam tank and gyrocopter. Others are screaming bell and doom wheel. :)

Thanks for the excellent videos and answering all the questions in the discussion below. Given the importance of shooting, and of getting enough hits on a single unit to remove a stand, do you require that all shots be called in advance, before any results are rolled? Understand this is only important when you have 2 or more potential targets that are equidistant from the closest portion of the firing unit, as you are always required to shoot at the closest target... Also, what minimum distance do you consider to be close enough to be considered equidistant, within a centimeter?

I generally use millimetres to decide which target is closer, so if one target is 10.4 cm (104 mm) away and another is 10.6 cm (106mm), you have to target the first. If there is still a choice of targets, then declare the target at the point you make the shooting attack. So for example, you have a unit of cannon that must target an enemy unit of knights, and a unit of crossbows that may target the same enemy unit of knights. The cannon go first and cause 2 hits. The crossbows can now choose to add their fire to the same target to try and remove a stand.

Can someone please explain the logic behind shooting and target acquisition? Why can't I shoot a specific target? Why am I forced to shoot the nearest enemy unit?

In the minute 28:45 when you charge with the infantry to the archers, the middle archer stand should not be able to shoot as it is supporting the stand on his right, therefor it is engaged in combat (and units that can support always support no matter what). Could you clarify this please?

Interesting question. Does a stand that would support in combat count as already engaged for the purposes of stand and shoot attacks against the charging unit? Or is the intent to permit stand and shoot attacks provided the stand is not physically contacted by the chargers and can draw line of sight? I will raise this with the rules comittee.

@@iainmstanding Dear Ianimstanding, in case this helps, whoever translated the original Warmaster rulebook into Spanish interpreted it as "stands in contact" not as "stands engaged in combat." that would make sense of the annotation of the text from "remember that stands touching corner to corner are engaged"

So the ruling from the rules comittee is that stands that would be in a supporting position are permitted to stand and shoot provided they have line of sight and are not in contact with the enemy. It is only stands that are already in base contact with the enemy that cannot stand and shoot. Whilst the rules for support indicate that a supporting stand is counted as being in combat, and therefore it's unit is in combat, that does not prevent a stand and shoot attack being made against a new charger provided stands have LoS and are not in contact with the enemy. A wording change is probably in order to clarify this in the rule book.

To stand and shoot at a charging enemy, shooting stands must be able to draw line of sight to the charging unit at any point during the charge move, including once the charging unit has formed a battle line. So if any charging stand ends up in the line of sight of the shooting stands before, during or after the charge move takes place, you can stand and shoot.

@iainmstanding my reading of the rule suggests that it would be hard for infantry to be flank charged by a full unit of infantry without getting to shoot. I.e. First stand going centre to centre would be already in LoS. Or am I missing something crafty?

I know Warhammer Fantasy artillery sometimes has rules for bounce, where a cannonball from an artillery piece can bounce through units in front of or behind the target unit. Does this happen in Warmaster as well?

Oh yes. Never leave your units in column formation in front of cannon.

Here's the quick way to check line of sight for ordinary units. Place a ruler or tape measure at right angles against the front of the shooter's stand , so the ruler or tape measure forms a straight line extending either side of the base. Anything under the ruler or tape measure, or anything in front of it, looking forwards from the shooter, is in line of sight. Otherwise it's not in line of sight.

Let me get this straight: a unit of pistoliers in line formation with 360 degrees LOS can only shoot with one stand at an enemy if that enemy is on its left or right side? This is due to the outer stand blocking the LOS for the other stands in that pistolier unit?

Only if the target unit is no wider than the stand of pistoliers blocking Los from the other stands. If the target unit is even a fraction wider than the nearest pitolier stand then the other stands will be able to see past it to the target.

@@iainmstanding ah, of course. Thanks for clarifying 👍 So they don't need to be in that staggered irregular formation due to them having 360 degrees LOS. This is because they can draw LOS from any edge of their base whereas normal missile units have to draw LOS from their front edge only

In regards to closest unit. If 2 stands are closer.to one.unit.and one stand is.closer to another do I have to split my fire? My mate and I had a heated conversation on this.

No. All stands shoot at the closest target to the shooting unit as a whole. You only split fire when some stands cannot see the same target. See 4:00 In making this video I realised I had been playing it wrong for years!
