Today, we're fabricating trucks for our newest batch of locomotives using our welding fixture table. This is a 2 axle switcher design, based on Bill Gardei's NB-1 locomotive, as described at www.islandpondrailroad.com.

Don't sell yourself short, Aaron, your welds look good & strong! Hope the new batch of locomotives turns out great, with your craftsmanship, I know they will! Take care!

Just FYI. What you should do before totally welding the parts together is ‘tack weld’ them together. This lets you check the alignment of the parts make adjustments if you need to. Then you can weld in confidence knowing the parts won’t move. And a grinder would be more effective than a belt sander.

Look better than my welds. Paint and spackle hide all sins, as long as it holds together!!!

TIP: On the inside of angle iron is a fillet which will prevent any metal laying on the inside from ever getting a tight fit. Grind the bottom corner of your cross piece at an angle to clear the fillet and you will be able to get tight joints without gaps to fill. It really makes it an easier weld to do.

You need to tack it all together first so you don’t warp the frame. Nice welds.

Aaron was that white paint or grey primer ? initially it looked white but when you showed the dry product it looked a bit dark to be white. great video, it is so nice to see the process.

You did drain the fuel out of the snowthrower, right? Your welds are definitely way better than i could ever do❗

I need to pull the snow blower in for a service soon. As soon as I clear the shop if some other projects.

Random though. A Universal gripper popped up a few years ago that uses essentially ground coffee inside a thick balloon. The object to grip is pushed into the gripper, then a vacuum is pulled on the balloon to lock the grains together. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZspkmZuXqt_Xlmw.html I wonder if you could use Styrofoam beads and a large vacuum storage bag to make temporary fill to level out temporary track routes? Would be a lot easier to haul around than sand-bags, but probably need the vacuum checked every day or two. (described another way, each bag would be a giant bean bag chair that could be made rigid after molding into the correct shape)

I have been considering building my own engine i have a small space Here in Lubbock Texas but switching and looping the grand kids around the house would be a blast. I've started mocking up a GP40 7.5" scale

You might not be a professional grade welder Aaron, but those welds aren't bad at all. I've seen a lot worse!

Auto helmets are a double quality upgrade: quality of life and quality of weld. It's like GPS at this point: yes, you can do without, but why would you?

Don’t wait. I just started welding (a week ago) and a basic auto-darkening helmet came with the kit. It works great.
