In this video Jeremy will show you how to ARC weld with as little as some jumper cables and a couple car batteries. It does work well in emergency situations but you'll still need to carry proper safety gear with you on the trail if you ever intend to use this method. It can be safe if done right and with healthy batteries but do be careful as things could go wrong if you screw it up!

Yep works just fine. No depth control so you gotta be careful not to burn thru what you’re welding but I find you can control it by draining the batteries little by little until just right.

I was welding with only two batteries just yesterday and the day before. One battery was a new deep cycle r.v. and marine, the other was my wife's old battery that I had brought back to life using distilled water and Epsom salt. I used E6011 3/32" rods to weld. This method worked better than expected! I can sure burn up the rods fast though, much like yours did. I'm no welder, especially with arc, but at least they do hold well.

Normally you’d stick weld with a Constant current source . With this set up you’re using a constant voltage source . With the positive going to the work piece he’s welding DC straight polarity

Also no mention of the fact you should avoid using the battery on the vehicle you are welding on! If you have to use the battery in the vehicle, make sure to disconnect both battery terminals. A reverse polarity 36 volts through the chassis with the battery connected would be a spectacular explosion!

I been doing this when I was 6years old . When the go-cart broke you found away. This was before KZfaq. IL never forget the 1st time I did it I was 6 almost 7 years old with moms sun tanning glasses on with a pair of my older brother good shades over top.i took mom's battery from her car took the 2 boat battery's and my dad's nice leather Harley Davidson gloves and I was weldin and jumping and welding and jumping around but fixed my go cart.with minor burns on my legs and feet bc I never wore shoes my dad came home and seen me out rideing and ask how and who welded thT for ya. I said I did . And before he could say anything I took off down the road but as I was pulling away I holler back to him said mom said she thinks her Battery is dead her car don't start. And off I went ...boy did I catch hell for using mom's and the 2 very expensive boat battery. But I saved up my chore money had dad take me to the junk yard and I got myself 4 good weilding batteries and showed my dad how todo it. I will never forget that day nor that feeling ..I was teaching my dad something at 6 years old the man that I thought new it all and here I was teaching him how todo it. that was the 1st time my dad showed me and told me he was proud of me for working with what Lil we had and making it work he did not say that much to me but he said it that day and boy it felt good I was always trying to make my dad proud of me and that was easier said then done.thats why I rember that day so well. ....So to all you dads out there let your kids know that your proud of them it means more then you think ,at least it did for me He did end up getting me a pair of those big green goofy lookin googels to wear a d some leather gloves and we weilded like that for years. Not pretty but it worked .we called it redneck weilding.

Awesome explanation of the battery voltages and how to set everything up. I might have to use this idea on a 91 Firebird in a wrecking yard so I can weld a nut to the locking wheel nut to get it off. seeing as how none of the available auto parts shops have bolt extractors or locking nut tool remover kits available. This method of welding does indeed work, however, be advised, car batteries do explode if you shower them with sparks, always make sure you stay as far away from the batteries as possible doing this kind of welding, i know from experience with a farm generator, the generator was programed to test weekly on a certain day, and it just so happened that when it came time for the generator to auto start, a spark shot out from one of the starter motor wires, and the battery exploded, (the battery was in a battery box with the cover on it), thank god no one was around it when the battery exploded. but it just so happened, me and another guy were looking at the generator shed from a good distance away and saw it all happen.

I get the concept.. many years welding.. welder by profession. But after seeing a lot of this videos..I noticed there is not one that shows a wide view to ensure that the weld is being done by the batteries... I've seen videos claiming 2 batteries.. all the way up to 4 batteries. Reason for all this watching.. buddy asked me to weld on a couple door hinges at his very remote cabin. So we took to brand new truck batteries and made an attempted using both 1/8 7018 and 6011... heck even went DCEP from DCEN... nothing but spit and spatter and one time a rod went sun orange in 2 seconds while scratching the tip... what I would like to see is a video with nothing in the video but batteries, rod, metal, cables... from 1 view point seeing all...

24v will work with 5/16" rods, but 30v+ really is ideal for 1/8, it runs hot but you get good penetration and when you're in a bind you really want something to stick. Try it again in your shop with 3 batteries. Always good to test a theory before driving out to BFE only to fail.

Stick welding is always DCEN. The current flows from the metal into the rod, heating it up to melting point. Tig welding is opposite, you don't want to burn up your tungsten so the voltage flows from the electrode into the metal, heating the metal and creating a pool to add your filler to. Hope this helps.

@@MrRobinski Nope. The old transformer stick welders came as both AC and DC. AC had less parts and therefore was cheaper. You can still buy Lincoln tombstone welders in AC only, and AC/DC. That said my tombstone welder is about as old as I am and still works every time I flip the switch.

it would work swimmingly, seeing how theres less room for injury or death because you dont have high amperage running through exposed outputs, you're not connecting batteries that arent meant to be connected that can cause them to actualy burst, but im sure you have everything you need for severe acid burns and a defibrillator for when you splash mud on your setup, making your body complete the circuit and frying you, and since you're already talkinga bout lugging around this many batteries, you can just get one to run the ACTUAL WELDER on! face it! this is in no way a better solution than going out in the wilderness with bunch of batteries, making the hold a higher amperage than they're rated for, take the risk of death by electrocution if its even wet out, let alone raining or on a muddy ass trail or the battery actually falling apart, spewing caustic chemical fumes and acid everywhere .It's safe, knowledgeable common sense, but if you happen to have a bunch of batteries and all the hardware and welding equipment just laying around sure, this would work in a pinch, it can also kill someone! Cheers!
