The roller diameter should be 5/16" according to a google search. So if you have a drill bit or rod that you know is 5/16" diameter that could be used to check for wear as well as a chain roller.

People ignore their MTB drivetrains, ride on them covered in mud, and think everything will be fine. Problem is, mud is really just grinding paste, and the microscopic grit in most muds is much harder and more abrasive than steel, let alone aluminium alloys. & aluminium turns into AlO2, which is a form of grinding compound. Which is why I use an ultrasonic cleaner on my chain and cogs after every dirty ride.

The rollers will deform the rearward edges of the sprocket teeth as they roll up and off at the top of the sprocket, so you want to look for these deformities. If you run a fingernail backwards across the tops of the teeth, and your nail catches on the back edge, that's a worn tooth.

Oval is common in 1x systems. Check out the "1x rumble" video to see how those rings will act when worn. If you have 2x or 3x front chainrings that are oval you will run into the same wear you saw in this video.

Would you have a rule of thumb as to chain wear Vs front chain ring and rear cluster wear? For instance a rule like.... you should replace the front chain ring every third chain replacement.
@andygilbert1877
@andygilbert1877 3 жыл бұрын
Probably depends on the chain ring. Some MTBs have 32 teeth, some road bikes have 52 teeth, the larger ring will probably wear less under the same conditions.

I replaced a 12 speed chain that wasn't even at .5% wear yet. Still it doesn't fit (it fits but it skips) on the rear cassette even though the cassette doesn't look that worn out yet. Skips only on the smaller two cogs. Ridden 2000-3000k on the drivetrain and always cleaned and relubed the chain (and only lubed the inner parts of the chain). Can it be the case that because I use mainly the high gears it does wear out even though the chain wasn't worn yet?
@makantahi3731
@makantahi3731 2 жыл бұрын
chain skips on gears that are most worn, most driven, i never wait for .5 %, .3% is time to replace chain, but even new chain can make gear to be worn, gear/ring teeth can be reshaped so you can save it from replacing, i am hot waxing chain every 100km on road bike, that chain lasted 6 times longer on wax than on oil, less number of teeth , more pressure on single tooth, more wear

In the name of all that is holy, what on earth is that front derailleur doing attached to the seat stay on that Camber? As the rear suspension moves through its travel, it will only move farther away from the crankset, will it not? Are we being pranked? Also, the chain skipping in slow-motion was cool, but I'd love to see it in ultra slow-mo. I don't know if we'd be able to learn anything extra, but I bet it would look awesome.
