What is interesting about the solo is at first, it’s very unsettling. But the more you hear it, familiarity settles in and you can actually hum or whistle it!

It's like with Schönberg, Webern and company. Sad thing is, almost nobody will take the time to listen carefully and repeatedly. And so we're caged in the fucking cage of listening to all the same again forever and forever and forever. - In "classical" music we hear the same old shit like 150 years over and over again. Today we have the hiphop-revolution: in the beginning it was like punk, today it's hiphop with sounds from the 70ies - nothing is true to the real times we are living in. Roxy Music I (1972) is more innovative as anything today tries to be. - Dark thoughts of a frustrated mid-40 guy .... ;-)

Bowie never took the obvious or easy route. That's why his nobody else sounds like him and why his music is timeless.

Yes, Mike Garson played on the Cracked Actor clip, and was the pianist on the album. He re-joined him as part of his band in the 90s

@Michael Z - Yes, it was definitely a live vocal. Did you catch the glaring mistake he made while singing? He sang, "When Jagger stared in people's eyes and scored." But the correct lyric should have been, "When people stared in Jagger's eyes and scored."

You are exactly right! Everything was from the studio version "Drive In Saturday" except David's singing. He made it his...again! And there are no bad renditions of "Panic In Detroit"!

That quote about having so many queries about the piano solo was what Garson said, not a quote from Bowie himself.

I remember back in '74 when I came across David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, I was eternally hooked ever since. He has an amazing vioce and his song writing skills are unmatched, there unique in every possible way. I can still remember all I wanted to do was get my hands on everything he did, I even have some of his early stuff form about '66. My very first concert I ever went to in '76 was Bowie at the LA forum. He will be missed.

Bowie at the height of his glam-years. Also one of his albums I like most."Drive-in Saturday" footage is fun. The darker edge would even increase on his next (I think) album 'Diamond Dogs'. Great video (as always) :-)

Wow, that was a drop of some killer content. Both of those KG&LW albums are bangers in their own ways. Bowie is a legend, and his peak years in the 70’s at the height of his drug intake are just amazing. Live In Santa Monica 72 is a classic live album, and on the list of best live albums of all time. Station to Station is an album you guys would love so if you want a dive, start on those.

Bowie on sax. Garson is a god on Aladdin Sane - is that piano solo fitting in with the A Lad Insane theme? Yes. "Drive In Saturday" is a futuristic song about a love affair. Panic In Detroit is about the 1967 riots in Detroit. Cracked Actor is just as rocking on the original album. Lady Grinning Soul....Bowie never played live.

This is the 2nd reaction video of yours I've watched. I'm on the 2nd song. It's an awesome live video. You are correct about his vocals. They were outstanding. Thanks. I'll wait til the end to critique you two. Aladdin Sane is one of my fave songs and albums. You are right about the piano. It steals the show. It's fun when you know it well enough to play air piano. I have to go. I'll check the rest later. You guys astound me with your lack of exposure to so much important rock. You guys haven't even mentioned his guitarist, Mick Ronson on the studio recording. He was a big part of David's early sound and success. He helped David establish his rock credentials.

According to long-time producer, friend, and occasional bass player Tony Visconti, David Bowie would knock out a vocal take in one or two tries. Sometimes they would try it a second time just to see what another take would sound like and end up using the first one anyway. Another great song on this album, maybe even my favorite, is the epic and elegant "Time." AMAZING vocal performance!

David Bowie´s half brother (and other family members) had schizophrenia disorders, and that impacted/inspired a lot of his music (discordant sound in this case, even his artistic "other egos/names": Ziggy Stardust, ). Alladin Sane=A lad insane. Bowie never "played" the game easy, he made his own, personal, fascinating path in al the possible ways. Always changed...while being him. Unique and incredibily talented. So glad you listened to him and such a good reaction!!! Bowie is such an icon. (Note: he also acted in like... 30 movies? Almost the figure of albums (a couple released after his death) he recorded. So you might have watched him in something even if you haven´t listened to his music). Still, even if you don´t react to him here, at the channel, his dicography is a trip from the rock and roll, to avant garde, to glam rock, to "plastic soul", to new wave, new romantic, etc. Always different, always unique, always killing it (at least in the European list since the early 70s), you are in for a treat. (Yes, I´m probably writing too much in too many videos, I just did a search with the name of your channel and some of the groups/artists I really do like 🙃🙃🙃). I still remember the sense of loss when the media said he died (january 2016). It was inmortal in my head (he was always on the radio, on the car, on the casettes and CDs, even in some of my childhood movies...).

By the way, are you both sure you have never listened to "Space Oddity" (song from another album)? It was a folk ballad, and the BBC played the song (just released back then) while covering the moon landing of the Apollo 11. Rocketed (no pun intended) to nº1 in the UK and other countries. Tons of people have listened to it just in those old videos from the BBC without realizing (I know you are in USA, but still...).

Read a long article on David Bowie. His younger brother idolized him but was " insane." Bowie couldn't take care of him. The boy committed suicide by putting his head on a railroad track. The train rolled over him.

It is about the futility of war. The title of the song as notated on the album had (1913-1938-197?). Just prior to its release the US had completed an offensive in Vietnam where it dropped more bombs than it had during WWII

Aladin Sane had The Spiders from Mars, at it's core - but the addition of Mike Garson, on piano, hinted at a new direction, though it would take a couple more albums before Bowis was brave enough, to ditch the spiders; totally, that is what he did...

saw the 76 tour in cincy-the height of the thin white duke's coke years-just listen how fast panic in detroit is done-god, those were the days! that band cooked, Carlos Alomar was the shit. BTW, that's Mike Garson in the cracked actor live vid. go back and listen to cracked actor from his live album, David Live, from his diamond dogs tour from back in the day, you'll then realize what he could create from even the same songs.

Wow the picture and sound sync are way off guys! Still thanks for doing this. You should listen to the first track "Watch that Man" Great Mick Ronson guitar. "Looks like the 80's". Bowie set trends years ago, he never followed them. That's why he's a legend. Saw him 3 times and feel blessed! I think on the first listen the studio track should come first as live tracks can be very different.

Bowie famously declared he was bisexual, but a stunt as much as anything else, time showed his real sexuality, inclination. Russell Harty, the chat show host presenting him, who looked a conservative straight was in fact a closet homosexual. And not until it was fashionable (others broke down the barriers) did he ever come out. Don't mind gay people, but dislike closet queens. Something sinister there.

Oh, God, what a horrible version of Panic in Detroit. I'll tell you where there's a live version of a Bowie song that's better than the original album recording. Breaking Glass, from the, Low, album. The live version is the one to listen to.
