U.S. Representatives Barbara Lee and Deb Haaland and Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín offer their words of support for the protection of the West Berkeley Shellmound and Village Site. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has listed the 5,700 year-old sacred site on the 2020 list of 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America. Chief Preservation Officer Katherine Malone-France leads off this video sequence affirming the historic significance of the places on the list and the deep meaning of the sacred village and burial site in Berkeley, which is threatened by commercial development. The site was landmarked by the city of Berkeley in 2000. This video was created for the press conference on September 24, 2020 announcing this important breaking news.
