CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Maria (Natalie Wood) sings at the bridal shop.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Romeo and Juliet is updated to the tenements of New York City in this Oscar-winning musical landmark. Adapted by Ernest Lehman from the Broadway production, the movie opens with an overhead shot of Manhattan, an effect that director Robert Wise would repeat over the Alps in The Sound of Music four years later. We are introduced to two rival street gangs: the Jets, second-generation American teens, and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants. When the war between the Jets and Sharks reaches a fever pitch, Jets leader Riff (Russ Tamblyn) decides to challenge the Sharks to one last "winner take all" rumble. He decides to meet Sharks leader Bernardo (George Chakiris) for a war council at a gymnasium dance; to bolster his argument, Riff wants his old pal Tony (Richard Beymer), the cofounder of the Jets, to come along. But Tony has set his sights on vistas beyond the neighborhood and has fallen in love with Bernardo's sister, Maria (Natalie Wood), a love that, as in Romeo and Juliet, will eventually end in tragedy. In contrast to the usual slash-and-burn policy of Hollywood musical adaptations, all the songs written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim for the original Broadway production of West Side Story were retained for the film version, although some alterations were made to appease the Hollywood censors, and the original order of two songs was reversed for stronger dramatic impact. The movie more than retains the original choreography of Jerome Robbins, which is recreated in some of the most startling and balletic dance sequences ever recorded on film. West Side Story won an almost-record ten Oscars, including Best Picture, supporting awards to Chakiris and Rita Moreno as Bernardo's girlfriend, Anita, and Best Director to Robbins and Wise. Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed by Jimmy Bryant, Natalie Wood's by Marni Nixon (who also dubbed Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady), and Rita Moreno's by Betty Wand. The film's New York tenement locations were later razed to make room for Lincoln Center.

Maria's mood in this song is super relatable. After you have a positive encounter with a person you're into, you all of a sudden feel like you're walking on air, like you're the belle of the ball, and it just feels fantastic, and then your best friend might look at you like "what am I going to do with you?"

Such immediate attractions very often turn out to be mere infatuations. But when and if they last, then the experience is indeed very magical and very special. The tragedy is when one suddenly feels that way and the other remains totally unmoved, as was the situation in my case when I was struck speechless by a female cousin who barely noticed that I existed.

Original and the best. Back in the days when gay meant 'happy'. I remember laughing when the modern stage version where Maria sings "....I feel pretty and witty and BRIGHT..." to rhyme with 'night' rather than 'gay' to rhyme with day.
@MultiPeacetoall
@MultiPeacetoall 8 жыл бұрын
+millertas Hi! That's what I thought for a while, too, but the differing lyrics were because the timeline in the musical isn't the same as the one in the movie. The revival copies the original Broadway show. In the movie, they put I Feel Pretty before Act Two, making it day time instead of night. The reason why the Broadway show had it later is because character death wasn't common in Broadway Musicals at the time, so they tried to keep Act Two very upbeat to contrast the death, with Gee, Officer Krupke and I Feel Pretty in it. So even when it opened on Broadway, they had night and bright rhyming rather than gay and day.

Weird that she should be considered insane simply for feeling attracted towards a fellow human being. This reminds me of the song Running Bear. In the song, the Indian brave Running Bear and Little White Dove, members of two enemy tribes, fall in love. Of course, being enemies, their love could never be allowed, A raging river separated them, and at the song's conclusion, they swim towards one another and perish holding hands in the river rapids.

I watched this film for the first time in 9th grade English honors back in 2007 and watching the remake in late 2021 in the theaters was impressive and astonishing. I can’t believe the two film productions are 60 years apart but it sure was worth the wait. I watched this older version of “I Feel Pretty” feeling so appreciative of the simplicity and nostalgia.

I always find it funny when everyone says this is very good lip synching by Natalie wood. It absolutely is. But Natalie wood could actually carry a tune. Unfortunately her voice wasn't as strong as Nixon's who's a stage veteran. Google clips of her singing tonight. It's beautiful.

+Trinity Sanabria There's a clip on youtube with Natalie Wood singing the parts that Marnie overdubbed - her voice was okay/average but certainly not great or good enough for such a powerful musical number. They needed a true soprano to carry it off.

I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and gay! And I pity Any girl who isn't me today. I feel charming, Oh, so charming It's alarming how charming I feel! And so pretty That I hardly can believe I'm real. See the pretty girl in that mirror there: Who can that attractive girl be? Such a pretty face, Such a pretty dress, Such a pretty smile, Such a pretty me! I feel stunning And entrancing, Feel like running and dancing for joy, For I'm loved By a pretty wonderful boy! GIRLS Have you met my good friend Maria, The craziest girl on the block? You'll know her the minute you see her, She's the one who is in an advanced state of shock. She thinks she's in love. She thinks she's in Spain. She isn't in love, She's merely insane. It must be the heat Or some rare disease, Or too much to eat Or maybe it's fleas. Keep away from her, Send for Chino! This is not the Maria we know! Modest and pure, Polite and refined, Well-bred and mature And out of her mind! MARIA I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty That the city should give me its key. A committee Should be organized to honor me. GIRLS La la la la . . . MARIA I feel dizzy, I feel sunny, I feel fizzy and funny and fine, And so pretty, Miss America can just resign! GIRLS La la la la . . . MARIA See the pretty girl in that mirror there: GIRLS What mirror where? MARIA Who can that attractive girl be? GIRLS Which? What? Where? Whom? MARIA Such a pretty face, Such a pretty dress, Such a pretty smile, Such a pretty me! GIRLS Such a pretty me! ALL I feel stunning And entrancing, Feel like running and dancing for joy, For I'm loved By a pretty wonderful boy!

How modern and ingenious this film is, music, songs and dances, as if it were a day ago. This is the magic of the 60s, the best years of Mankind after the terrible war, when people understood the value of Life and Love. Amazing film and music that is not possible to repeat. Born in 1962, I carried the love of this film and music all my life.
