When I backed this game, I was expecting it would fire 'Spurs: A Tale in the Old West' off of my gaming shelf. But considering the issues which you rightfully raise in this video, I'm keeping 'Spurs', a 2013 game which does everything that WL does (except for the Poker play), but different (and in some cases, better). The money in Spurs is much tighter, and its system of winning challenges and dueling other players relies entirely on how much you've built up your character instead of what you hold in your hand. Plus 'Spurs' mechanic for mining gold is more thematic.

I was a KS backer and I actually enjoy the game at a 4 players count. We had a similar finish to a game, that was won by the closest "skinned smoke wagons", I was hoping for this reference in the video. I agree with everything NPI stated during the first half of the video, some great mechanics without the bang for your long term buck. The KS expansions do improve the game (more equipment to purchase), but some of the other game mechanics (i.e. bandit NPCs) are worthless. Things that could be improved 1)The the rules should state that you could purchase/upgrade multiple items for LP at the end of game (helps with expansions) 2) More robust/interactive combat system for the bandits, sheriff and bank guard - The NPC deck is boring and too easy to win or not get injured. This deck would have been the perfect opportunity to use the excess money for more bullets/fighting off wounds? 3) Have the bandits move during the game to create more interaction/fights - currently they stand on irrelevant areas on the board. I have a few ideas and house rules that I am going to try to make the game more robust and interactive. Annie Oakley is the ultimate smooth criminal! Love it!

This is my first comment I've left for you guys. I like what you do, and I hope this doesn't come across as trolly, just a difference of opinion. I have the KS version and play with all expansions so that certainly could enhance the gameplay. Here is what you definitely got right: Game isn't very fun with 3 people, probably to long with 6, so only play with 4-5. Items are certainly limited in the store. They should have given us a store cheat sheet so we can see what everything does too. Money in the first 1-2 turns is valuable then it's pointless after that. Everyone is just taking poker cards pretty quickly. Where I think you missed it a bit: If you are jumping around from Marshall to Wanted you aren't going to win. In every game I played you pick a track and stick with it or you lose, badly. Yes the store items are limited but if you are wasting turns running to buy stuff at the store a lot, you are wasting valuable turns. So you go to the store 1-2 max or you will lose. So adding a bunch of new store items wouldn't really help. You said the game was fun because of your friends. That's the point of the game! You have to react to what your friends are doing if you want to win. It's incredibly thematic, I like to throw on some western music when I play, and I don't have any other games like this or as thematic as this. (Xia is the closest but it is too long, and too much time between turns. I will play this 100% of the time over that) This is an excellent change of pace game that can certainly be a star at the table. The theme and interaction with others is why you play this game. No there are no ground breaking new mechanisms but what they have works, and works well. I would predict that if your viewers played it, many of them would want to buy it.
@NoPunIncluded
@NoPunIncluded 5 жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstood us slightly. We were not at all suggesting that you have to jump between tracks! As for the point of the game - you're not telling us anything new, but there's a disconnect between what you "have to do" to play well (although that's a loaded definition) and the thematic trappings that the game is definitely riding on. What I'm saying is: we get the interplay but we don't think it's as great as it's making itself out to be.

Unfortunately expansions to Western Legends are a must have, to the point they should be included in the core box, especially the one that adds extra market cards. It's a game changer, and a balance to the game, the extra cards make it more worthwhile to spend earned money and those items balance some of the less useful strategies like wrangle. Game seems shallow and unbalanced without it.

I'd take that with a pinch of salt - apparently Annie Oakley is a common mondegreen for the song, but the original music video made references to the 1930s - Annie Oakley died the previous decade. My spot research hasn't turned up a plausible suggested explanation of "Annie" in Smooth Criminal, but there's definitely nothing supporting the idea that this video's "explanation" was more than a joke...

The Duel is better, as the Cabaret provides 4 points, but 120 dollars also is worth 2 points at the end. Duel win is 2 points, but the wound means your opponent loses a point in the end.

It was surprisingly easy to pick-up and not too difficult to teach. I think the best games involve a good mixture of Marshal/Wanted players to you get that interplay between the tracks. I've been in a couple games where the leader jumps out ahead real fast if no one picks up on what they're doing. I do agree with the sentiment that the money is a little too easy to get in this game, but I know Collosal designed this to be a relatively quick game compared to the other sandbox games out there. For example, Merchants and Maurauders can drag on for awhile since a lot of the time you're using 2 turns just to get somewhere important on the board. I've yet to play Xia I thought the component quality could've been better for that price tag (I'm looking at you, tiny poker chips and cubes). Ultimately the star of the game is those dope Poker Cards, they give you a lot of agency and flexibility. 7.5 out of 10 for me.... 8.5/10 for the rest of my group. They were big fans

Surprised at the bad review - this game is great purely because of all the unexpected interactions. It’s the first game which my non-geek family members have ever asked to play again! Also, you can move to any adjacent space - there’s no such thing as a “diagonal” movement - I didn’t understand the confusion there. And the hairline demarcation between spaces are not that difficult to see - they make the board appear more “open” - so emphasising the open, sandbox nature of the game. I guess any review is by nature subjective though. Agree with most other reviews - and I’m obviously subscribed :-)

Just played this. Not sure i get the critique about cash. This game is really a pick up and deliver in disguise. Take cattle, bring them somewhere for rewards. Take gold, bring them to bank for points. Take money, bring them to cabaret for points. Ultimately, all the "activities" are just means to either pick up a deliverable good (money, gold or cattle) or deliver those goods for points. So the store does not have a lot of stuff... but it doesn't need to. Compare this to another famous pick up and deliver: Merchant of Venus. Not a lot of upgrades there... because money are the actual points there. Spending on upgrades is costing you points. It's similar in Western Legends. Money is a deliverable good. Spending it on items means spending points (some items gives points, but are more costly than spending on the cabaret). My point is, even if there was a hundred different items in the game, buying more than a few of the highly useful ones would be a losing proposition that players would see after a few games. They would be left untouched and unused. Money would be better spent on points because it's a deliverable good.

The reason we have learned not to answer that question is because it doesn't matter how many times we have played it - 2 or 3 or 7 or 17 - for someone - that is going to be not enough. Trust me.
