Western Swing fiddle was a style pioneered in the 1930's and 40's, combining elements of country and jazz. In this fiddle lesson I demonstrate the ways in which simple dance tunes can be given a western swing treatment through use of added quavers to give swing, open string and fourth finger drones to give a western sound, grace notes such as hammer-ons to decorate the melody, and shuffles to add drive and danceability.
I use the tune Red River Valley to illustrate all these techniques.
This video is part one of a series of three; part two will introduce swing bowing and the basics of improvisation, while part three will look at modified melodies, contest-style, and hot soloing using standard Western Swing licks.

Hi Chris, no I did not see the interview of Michael Doucet with you. I had sent for the tune Cajun Fiddle as we call it in Canada and it may be called the same in the US and that I don't know. Anyway, what was sent to me was a CD by Michael Doucet called the Cajun Fiddle but the tune Cajun Fiddle was not on it. Hope you can help. Won't you to know I really enjoy how you explain and go about putting what you are teaching across to us and respect your knowledge of the art of playing the fiddle. Thank you.

I'm not sure how to say this where it makes sense, but I'll try. When I pick my bow off of the strings while playing in the middle of the bow, again- when I pick it up from the strings and then reapply it to the strings and try to bow it again, it shakes/jitters. I cannot continue/resume playing smoothly. I see people lifting the bows on and off anywhere they seem to wish on the bow, and then putting it back onto the strings (quickly/moderate speeds) without the dreaded shaking/jitter... What am I missing? I've tried tighter and looser bow, doesn't seem to help. Please help, it is so frustrating. I looooove your playing and channel by the way, I just started self teaching about a year ago, but had played a bit 5-6 years ago as well. Not great, but I'm learning :-) 5:55 is a good example of what I mean. So is 6:15 - 6:18. You are taking the bow slightly off and on the strings. Yes? Every time I reapply my bow, its jitters unless I place it veeeeeerrrrrryyyy gently... THEN play.

Hi. Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your bowing. It looks easy, but in fact, as you have discovered, the bow side of fiddling is just as hard as the left hand. If possible you should bet a one to one lesson from a classical teacher to sort this out. You could also try using someone else's bow, just to confirm that it's not the bow's fault. You need a set of exercises purely for bowing technique. That's not something I do, but there must be plenty of good videos on intermediate level bow control. Good luck!

@@TheFiddleChannel Hello, thank you so much for your reply, many people don't take the time to try and assist, haha :-) Unfortunately, I live in a smaller town and there is not anybody around that teaches :\ I have a wooden bow that cost around $75 I believe, it was a gift from my Mom and Dad when I was 17, I'm now 25, but quit playing for many years, as I just became too discouraged by my own inability to learn, honestly. I'm trying again and seem to be succeeding a bit more, but still- not a simple instrument for sure, haha! I also have a carbon fiber bow which I bought recently on sale for $80 (originally $130). I'm getting my wooden one rehaired, and will be trying to again soon to see how different they are. I am fairly sure it is not the bow, but I'm not really qualified to know for sure of course. The violin was about $350 I believe. Good enough that it should be playable for most basic techniques, yes? Romanian made 2005 Genial Violin is the maker. I will continue looking for tutorials online that may be able to help, as you suggested. You called it Bow Control... Yes? I will search for that. I have been looking for "how to stop bow shaking", and tend to only find LARGE bow shakes, rather than these small annoying jitters. Perhaps over all bow control as you mentioned will be the ticket! :-) I appreciate your help, this has been the best advice I have come across. Bless you, sir!

@@randomfrog1196 I think the key to your problem may be with the first (index) finger of your right hand. Try holding the bow so it just rests on a string. Then, only using pressure from this finger, push the bow down until the wood of the bow touches the string. This is where the pressure comes that controls the bow and keeps it where you want it, and stops if from shaking.
