Iv done lots now on car parts with chopped look or sheets with epoxy resin and vacuum pack it’s definitely an art. I’m starting to do this on glass do sheet carbon first then chopped on top It’s for car door pillow so you can have chopped or the other way

Heat polyester resin with heat gun to release traped air bubble. Or dip mixture glass on boiled water.

Hey bud. Awesome work. I would just like to know if you placed pva or mold release on the glass? Or did you just dig in straight with the epoxy? Thanks man
@HensenCars
@HensenCars 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching! I did wax the glass 5-6 times with a paste release wax (you can see the wax in my mould making video tutorial) And then went on with polyester resin. I’m not sure how adhesive epoxy resin would be on glass so might be worth a coat of PVA or chemical release agent such as Easylease. Thanks

Strikes me you could make a nice thick sandwich by laying two layers of sheet down as base layer, filling both sides with flake and pressing them together. "Flake sandwich", probably would not be as strong as simply layering sheet though but cheaper perhaps...

Is there a way to build up the chopped carbon fibre to around 1/4 inch and have it be really strong and hard as rock?

How much chopped carbon did you use? I am trying to figure out how much raw chopped material is needed for various sizes. Would you say the glass is 10”x10”? How much chopped carbon did you spread? SERIOUSLY CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR POSTING THIS - it will likely allow me to make my body kits with my current machinery and skill level. I’d love to move on from strictly chop strand matt

And how much resin - I hope I can get some answers. This stuff looks amazing!
@HensenCars
@HensenCars 3 жыл бұрын
@@fasttommysHi Tom, Thanks for watching and your kind comments! I used exactly the same size as the panel would have been for laying it normally so probably as you say they're around 10-12 inches square. To guess at weight if you're purchasing pre-chopped (Like I wish I did halfway through chopping!) then we know that a 12 inch square (0.3m x 0.3m = 0.09Sqm) of 380gsm took 34.2 grams of chopped Carbon. as for resin it depends on if you're using polyester or epoxy but I go by just wet enough, but not too wet kind of feel. I think polyester resin is normally 2.5 times the mat weight. Hope this helps

Amazing. I really can’t thank you enough! I have some opportunities to make parts for high end cars and the process of chopped carbon looks like something I can work with using my current skills and molds. When I start to make parts I’ll be sure to send some pictures your way - or hell maybe I’ll even start making my videos to help other get started. Thank you thank you thank you!

Any pRticular reason why you used fiberglass matt and not carbon rejnforcement ?
@HensenCars
@HensenCars 3 жыл бұрын
All comes down to money! For simple cosmetic pieces where weight/strength is not an issue then fibreglass mat is fine. For anything needed for carbons weight saving or strength then a full carbon layup would be better, as well as using epoxy rather than polyester resin. Thanks for watching!

How strong is it compared to epoxy?
@HensenCars
@HensenCars 3 жыл бұрын
I’d say it’s probably just as strong in this example compared to the epoxy samples I made but it’s a very heavy, thick layup. For strength to weight ratio the epoxy is unbeatable.
