Hey, Giles is back! What I love about your videos, Giles, is that you actually go for a hike to get to your campsite. You're not just walking a short distance to camp for a few hours. It's like a proper day-out and overnighter. Not just a wee saunter in the park.

That was epic sir. Minimal kit and what an adventure. Some fellow KZfaqrs of yours use trucks to get within 50 yds of the camp , fancy expensive tents , stoves , inflatable mattress and four season bags etc etc . How remarkably refreshing to see what can be achieved at the other end of the scale. Thank you and happy new year sir.

Yes agreed, but not all of us KZfaqrs are made of 100% organic moral fibre as Giles is. Unless you've done it, you don't know how difficult it is and I've lost a few Mates doing Wild Camping overnighters in Tesco and other supermarkets. 😏🤦‍🤷‍😂

No hesitation in saying yet again Giles, first class effort in the camp and indeed the making of the video. You take time to have a good ramble, make a simple but honest camp, with all the hard and time consuming efforts it takes to make a from bare bones fire, and being honest about it as well . First class in every respect. It's about time, your channel got some more coverage, for the honest and down to earth you show others, that you don't need all the Gucci gear. Thank you Giles. Beautiful wintery hills but miserable rain. Props to you for your damp persistence in these conditions. At our Forest school, because we cook the kids a hot lunch over the fire, I prep and tie up little starter bundles of tinder and kindling and tuck a couple away in my kit to bring on wet days. They don't weigh much or take up much space and that way we know the fire will light!

I've just found your channel and have watched nearly all of your videos over the past 2 days. I'm finding your approach to camping really inspirational, and I'd love to see you do a video giving a breakdown of your gear and techniques. You've got a lot to teach. I feel like your "style" of camping for want of a better word is a lot closer to how our ancestors over hundreds of years would have done things, and I really respect that despite how uncomfortable it may seem to me! Thanks for the videos ✌🏻

Hello again, Giles, I hope you've had a peaceful yuletide. Thanks for another great video. This one was quite the adventure! I'm still amazed that you can fit everything into that size of pack; food, shelter, sleeping and cooking gear, I don't know how you do it. Some great views again! When I climb a trig point it always feels good that I'm the highest person above sea level for quite a few miles around. I love the different greens you can see in things like the mosses and lichens. Stunningly beautiful and even therapeutic hues. The weather was good to test your gear which, although you had some rain coming through a bit was generally holding out well. Your fire seemed warm when it got going, though as you say it was hard to keep going with the damp wood. Tht sounds like a familiar story! It was nice that you had some hardwood to use, as I find around here it's difficult to find decent hardwood locations. I remember going out once with lots of plans of things I was going to do on the outing, but when it came to it so much time was spent processing firewood and tending the fire to keep warm, cook, etc. that there was actually no time for anything else at all. It was a perpetual cycle of processing, stacking by the fire to dry and warm, then burning, that kept me busy the whole time. I must say, I'm always surprised how thick your twigs are when you light your fires, but your waxed disks usually get them going without much bother. I generally find sleeping sideways across the entrance more agreeable as I hate the thought of my feet and legs getting cold at the end away from the fire. Sideways-on, I can roll over and so swap the side that is facing the fire. I wish you well for another year, Giles. I hope you keep up the videos, it's always a joy to watch your travels and sights. Take care my friend, and bye for now.

Really great to get your comments Adrian - thanks so much for watching the videos. Yeah, I expect you get challenging damp conditions a lot more often being much further west. It can make working with fire rather difficult as you say. I think I fit as much stuff ‘on’ that little pack as ‘in’ it 🤣😂🤣😂 Yeah, I’m deffo gonna try lying sideways onto the fire. As you say it’s possible to keep both sides of your body warm every time you turn over - a bit like a vegetable kebab !!! 😂🤣😂🤣 Seriously, it does sound more comfortable tho. I hope you and yours had a great Xmas and wishing yous a fantastic 2023 my Friend. Keep warm and dry 😊👍

Great video as usual. I am flying to The U.K. immediately to give you a lesson on The Trucker's Hitch. I figure I'll be saving you about two hours of time with each shelter set up. Maybe I'm exaggerating a little. Watching you run that line around that tree about 100x's was painful. You show the viewer, better than the other Bushcrafters in UK, what a beautiful place The UK actually is! Much appreciated and I can't wait for your next adventure. Be well!
@gilesbinyon

Thanks you kindly Floyd - appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, what a brilliant knot the Truckers Hitch is. I still use it camping and also those ‘Niteze’ jamming cleats which do the same thing in a much more convenient way. But I did a video demonstrating tarp setups and I wanted to keep the knots really, really simple. So I try to use the ‘No knot’ for as much as possible ! This has the advantage that, even in damp swollen natural fibre line, it is still easy to release the line when breaking camp. In such conditions and after being under tension all night - other knots can seize up ! Thx again for your kind words - take care 😊👍

Blimey, that was a bit damp Giles! I think three wax discs in those conditions is pretty good - I'd probably have needed double figures.. I suppose this is where a small/'legal' knife doesn’t really cut it (no pun intended 😀), when you could do with battening some wood to get at the dry stuff. Giles! Great 👍 to see you again, My Friend. Been waiting anxiously for a new video. Just remember though, you do what you can, when you can. I’m a patient person. Nice hike. I like that, but you had some steep hills there. And, some gorgeous views. Does look 👀 a little damp over there, and you had kind of a soggy camp, but you got right to it and made it work. Love your “old school” approach, but I always worry about you staying warm. I have a suggestion, that you may already considered. If you put one or two 🖐 hand warmer packets in each of those extra socks you put on, it would help keep your feet warm. Yes, I know they are not “old school”, just a thought. I use them in my mittens when I work outside in winter 🥶. Seems I can never keep my fingers warm. Well, Giles, it was great to see you again. Yours are among my favorite videos. I know how tricky it can be getting a fire going for just a short time in that weather can be . So keeping it going all night must be even more tricky . Still don't know how you don't even use a blanket. Takecare good Sir 🏕👍

Good Evening Giles .. 👍👍👍 .. it's nice seeing you again and hearing your signature 'ditty'. From the scraping of arthritic fiddles to the catchy mis-stepping, almost tripping jangle of the banjo. Always a pleasure and a 'deliverance' 😏 from the city to the outdoors 😊. Yes, rain can often stop play, but in your case and this instance .. nope. Those waxed cotton makeup pads work like a charm .. use them too. To fit into my tin, I trim the edges. The 'twirl' cut off that results also helps in getting reluctant burns going. I've said before, 'Simplicity has a Beauty of it's own' and watching your posts proves it .. and encourages one to follow suit. Thanks for sharing my friend and I look forward to the next. Take care .. Tommy

Hi Giles, I'm playing catch up with the vids at the mo!! Looked like a challenging yet rewarding camp. Good on you for persevering through that awful weather. It can certainly be a pain keeping the fire ticking over in those conditions and sourcing dry sticks. Even the dead standing wood is pretty sodden at the mo. Nice bit of grub though with the kebabs. I was just thinking about your comments in the morning. If you pitch the Palatka slightly lower, would that enable you to peg it out wider and enable you to lay across the fire. WOT NO PUB with a Cosy Log Fire and a Pint or two as your arm is twisted! 😉😜 Full respect to you for sticking that out in an open wet and windy shelter. No idea why the Zeltbahn started leaking. You usually have Coconut oil with you and I was thinking about smearing some on the topside of the wettest part. I'm out everyday in the local ULU with the dogs and one thing I detest is MUD - it sticks to my boots and raises me off the ground a few centimetres, but nothing I can do about it except try to detour around it where possible. I was thinking perhaps you ought to seek out and tryout one of the older Military Canvas BIVI bags. This would allow you to raise the Zeltbahn off the ground giving more room and the BIVI would stop the draughts getting at you. I doubt there would be too much weight difference between one canvas BIVI and one Zeltbahn. Nice to see you wearing it too and straight away one can see it is a Zeltbahn and not a Plash Palatka as the latter only has one ARM HOLE. 😉 Keep dry and safe my friend and not long before that 5k Subs is reached and well earned it is too.

Only shower proof but nice lightweight canvas. Comes up pretty massive - still trying to figure how to incorporate it in a set up. Yeah, mud can be a real pain - and cleaning kit afterwards is too ! Always good to catch a new Giles Binyon overnighter!! Thanks so much sir!! Great views and great camp! Just wondering if the waterproofing wore off there because it catches the heat of the fire and therefore breaks down faster than the rest of the tarp. Love your videos Giles, but I could not brave a wild camp, that must take some nerve. Two things though, it’s a shame that you feel compelled to ‘Leave No Trace’ when you aren’t doing anything wrong. Putting leaves back where you found them in a wild environment seems a little like trying to please the authorities, when frankly you’re hurting no one. As long as you leave no litter, that should be enough really, but I see why you and others do it. Secondly, your OUTRO always amuses me, 50 yards, left turn, every time, and it makes me smile 😊 keep up the good work, it’s very therapeutic this end. Thanks, Rich
