A day in the hills followed by a woodland camp without synthetic fibres. Testing out the use of a vegetable steamer as a mini camping fire pit.

Hi Giles, thanks for this relaxing video and what a wonderful setting for a woodland wildcamp. I'm with you on Yew trees. Summed up as being 'Ancient, Morbid and Toxic...' The Romans believed they were grown in Hell...! Usually planted in graveyards over the graves of plague victims to purify their bodies they have become equally associated with immortality and omens of doom. They are havens for wildlife though and the fruit is eaten by many bird species. That's quite a number of Yew trees in your woodland camp spot - very wise to seek the protection of an ancient Oak 🌳 Take care Giles, and thanks for taking us on a great camp 🙌🏻 Cheers, Paul 🙏🏻 PS: I love the music...!

Another great video Giles! Was looking at those steamers for an upcoming trip I have coming up so thanks for showing that. Have to admit, every time that reel kicks in at the end with you kicking the forest floor over the fire scar makes me smile. If only all wild campers took such care and attention... You should be an official wild camping ambassador and when I become Prime Minister that shall be my first appointment. 😉

Second viewing and I understand about your feelings regarding Yew trees. I think it is important for us to listen 'to the back of your neck', to trust your gut on things like this. These trees are ancient and have been part of our culture for many, many generations. There must be something to it. Here in Australia I listen to the superstitions of our Aborigines. They were here for so long, virtually unchanged from Day 1 so they must have had an intimate relationship with the land; something even urban indigenous people still feel to a degree.

Thanks very much for watching this once more and also for that wonderful and insightful comment. Yeah, you are right - the native peoples of many lands, whom our voyaging ancestors deemed as unintelligent ‘savages’ turn out to be a lot more in sync with our planet than we ever were !!! I know it’s all rumours and legend, probably based on their toxicity, but I just can’t help being a little spooked by the wonderful and enchanting Yew Tree. And my area has many fantastic specimens. Thx again 🌲👍

Very happy to see another of your videos waiting in the uploads. They are now definitely my favourite. Over the week I've been musing on how to follow this ethos more myself. I do already in everyday life but weirdly hadn't joined the dots to my walking and wild camping. Won't be buying new kit, but will see how I can work towards it. First step has been to retrieve my sheepskin rug which had somehow made its way into my daughter's room (how does this happen). Next to find a colander. Thank you for another deeply satisfying film.

Yew are my 2nd fave after huge old oaks. Quite rare to find a forest full nowadays. Usually only found in churchyards as they weren't chopped down due to it being consecrated ground. Their staves make excellent longbows due to the combination of heart & sap wood. As for the fire bowl, I've recently purchased one of those small foldable bbq's. Adds a bit of weight but not too much. I can do a fire directly on the ground but prefer not to if possible

Good Evening from a South African living in Switzerland .. 👍👍👍 refreshing .. thank you for sharing. I am a new subscriber and have been playing 'catch-up' on some of your earlier postings. As an Old Geezer (DOB 1950), I also tend towards 'Old School Gear' for many reasons .. some being .. I already have it (and for a long time), it is robust, continues to serve me well and can be depended upon when used within it's Design Intent .. and most important .. it is paid for (something a pensioner like me appreciates). Nostalgia also plays a part .. naturally. That said .. I am a keen observer of Human Behaviour .. simplistically .. 'how they do stuff that is also of interest to me'. That way, I have learned by the example and mistakes of others and have not repeated some of them .. some but not all .. one must also every now and again slip on a banana skin to reinforce learning. Gear .. and specifically in this case, clothing. You appear to have a standard clothing set that seems to work for you and well at that. If I may, please .. would you be so kind as to consider mentioning in you postings, that which you are using and how effectively (or not) it performs under those specific conditions. Besides satisfying my curiosity, it would assist me (and I am sure others) when going out to purchase replacements for that which has 'passed on' or 'shrunk' due to Old Age ... 'Branding and Marketing' are not always indicative of Quality, Longevity, Value for Money or suitability for the Task in Hand. Just something to consider please. Once again .. good postings .. keep them coming please. Take care .. Tommy
@gilesbinyon
@gilesbinyon 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Tommy - your kind comment is much appreciated. Yes, I don’t really go into the clothing side of things. These can be the hardest items to source synthetic free I think. Obviously wool features highly. But things like 100% Marino clothing is very expensive. This is not so bad if you knew an item would last a lifetime. However, a lot of garments are hard washed very often, fully involved in the grind of camping and also have to cope with the potential damage of an open fire. I am not rich, so I am using up my existing stock of clothing some of which does contain synthetics and some ex-military I am not sure what is the exact content. My regular jumper is wool French army and a one off from local army surplus store. My trousers I am using up from work (I have numerous pairs) and, although mainly cotton, they definitely contain some synthetics too. As my gear wears out I will bite-the-bullet and probably go for 100% Marino for my tops. Another wool jumper should be possible to source. And I will attempt to get completely synthetic free trousers too. And as you say, ex-military (of a certain era) can provide a good source of all this stuff. Cheers 👍
@thomasmusso1147
@thomasmusso1147 2 жыл бұрын
@@gilesbinyon Thanks for that Giles .. much appreciated. Yep .. 'Merino' is expensive .. very much flavour of the month (and not that hard-wearing or long-lasting). I try to protect my less robust Woollies and such with over-garments .. Mil Surplus Combat Jackets etc. For info .. Varusteleka, an online Outdoor store based in Finland is a good source of reasonably-priced Mil Surplus and good quality 'own brand' gear. Good web-site, excellent no BS service and prompt delivery. Well worth a look .. even just for comparison to local sources. Looking forward to the next .. take care .. Tommy

Ah, that’s what I needed. A good relaxing video. I say that because they are! Yesterday was church, shopping and mulching in the back. Today was several hours of leaf work in the on the roof, back and front. We have a lot of trees 🌲, mostly maples. They are nice in the summer with the shade and helping the house stay cool, but in autumn, too many leaves. Interesting country and terrain, and spectacular views. Never heard that legend of yew trees before. Not sure if we have yews over here. Weren’t English longbows made from yew wood. Sure did the job at the Battle of Agincourt, I think it was. Glad you found a nice oak to keep you safe. Been trying to think of ways to keep you warm without adding to much to your kit. How about a loose fitting pair of really heavy wool socks for sleeping? Would a separate blanket roll slung over your shoulder be too cumbersome? Just some thoughts with cold weather upon us. Well, stay safe and warm, My Friend. See you in the next video. 😊

Thanks again Steven. Sounds like your gardens keep you quite busy !!! You’re right to keep the guttering and roof clear of leaves - often overlooked and can cause building damage/damp if unattended. Yeah, always looking for ways to stay warm at night. And I’ve taken on board your woolly sock suggestion already 😊!!! I reckon you do have Yews over ‘the pond’ but they may not be that prevalent as here 🤔🤔 Thx again my Friend 😊👍

@@gilesbinyon It does keep me busy, but I’ve got a small wooded area, maybe 100’x40’, that gives me a place to try out ideas. I do sleep out there a lot during the year. Even though we do have neighbors in back and on the sides, our backyard is fairly private. Let me know if the socks help. There is a site on KZfaq called “coalcracker bushcraft” that has a video about keeping warm in a tarp shelter with a wool blanket. That’s where I got the sock idea.

Hi Giles, the cold feet. Have you considered wearing the long type woolen puttees (normally copies of the real thing) on your walk in? Would add insulation to your lower legs on the walk in (could still wear the gaiters too) but also, on the night, you could use them to wrap loads of loose layers around your feet/ankles, making them dual purpose. Also good for cordage, ties, first aid etc.,.. Another thought, have you considered a wool or cotton buff to add extra insulation to neck/head with little addition to weight.

hi Giles thankyou so much for your video uploads im just about to start my wild camping experience and i've learned so much from watching your videos, i love your minimilst approach although i may take a softer approach initially as your clearly way tougher than me and camping without a sleeping bag may take a little time especially in winter 🥶 , may i ask you a couple of questions in regard your equipment in this video? i really like your cooking pot and wondered its make and size , i have searched and can only find a zebra billy can which isnt quite the same , i know after watching all your videos you favour ex military gear so wondered if it was that? and if so what it is ... also as a newbie ive been looking for suitable trousers much like yours that have a side pocket for a foldable saw, ive looked all round go outdoors etc but finding a pair of trousers is a mind field of options and yours also look fairly normal and could be worn day to day and also hopefully dont cost £100 + like the stuff i looked at today... you'd think these trousers were magical pants at that price 😁... so could yountell me what brand are they Giles? , you seem like a no nonsense kind of bloke and clearly 'know your beans" so i trust your choices in clothing and equipment ,i hope you dont mind me asking and i hope this message finds you in good health and spirit .. thanks again for your wonderful videos i watch them everyday they and you really have inspired me to get out and experience the great outdoors 👍--

Thanks very much Johnny- appreciate you watching these vids and those very kind words. The cook pot in this video was acquired secondhand. I don’t think it would be manufactured any more but I have noticed that one popped up on eBay recently ! It is called ‘Bull Dog Brand’. Made of aluminium, it is 130mm wide. The trousers I use are ordinary workwear trousers which I think are a pretty good option for bushcraft because they are tough and usually have useful pockets. I got mine a few years ago - called ‘Result Work Guard’. They are nearly 100% cotton but do contain a small amount of synthetic 😐. Cheers and good luck on your wild camping adventures 😊👍

@@johnny0468 thanks Johnny - yeah, the veg steamers are also available quite cheaply online. They sometimes come in 3 different diameters. Mine is a medium size - about 29 cm (opened). Hi Giles, I enjoy watching your videos they make a change from the norm which get put up on you tube. With regards to your sleeping system, may I suggest that you check out Blackie Thomas on you tube as he recently did a video on a US military surplus cotton sleeping bag cover. Every time I watched you walking with that pack hanging down your back I wanted to tighten your straps and cinch it up higher. Is it designed to ride so low or is that how you prefer it? Doesn't it pull you back and make you strain forwards against the drag? I like the vegetable steamer fire bowl idea. I'll try that myself. enjpyed the vid, great to see the NVA Zeltbahn in use. I'm retired now I'm 63 but I don't know if I can afford to get over there to Great Britain and fulfill my dream. It is great you use nothing but drugs and materials no synthetics I was thinking I could send you a roll of aluminum foil it has corrugation in it it's very lightweight and you can roll it up and you could use six feet in there to lay down on and put your lambskin or whatever that is you use when you use your shelter. You would probably not use it because it's synthetic right?
