Ah...the memories of staying up late some nights to catch this (only in summer time - I was 9 years old at the time of this airing and had to go to school the next day)...plus the awesome music they'd play through it. It's how I learned to appreciate "easy listening" music as I grew older. Hopefully this stays up. What a great time travel to 1982! Thank you!!!!

An incredibly novel idea this must've been at the time for any local TV station. Rather than simply go off the air with station ID and the national anthem, followed by a few minutes of test pattern and nothing but snow and white noise to follow until 6 am the next morning as most stations in smaller markets still did in 1982, some genius comes up with this as a way to keep Chicagoland insomniacs, nighttime workers, and others who were up when the sun was down, entertained through the wee hours. Well before overnight news and paid infomercial programming came along to fill the void for those who did not have cable. I must say though, that this is INFINITELY more entertaining than both! Very cool!

Pioneer eras for things are special in a nearly magical kind of way. You lived through that… these graphics were “cool” back then. Now high end graphics are almost taken for granted. Yes, it is spectacular but the “magic” is not there. Comic books, video games, music, cars, radio, etc… those who experienced those early advances truly lived through something special.

I'd watch anything from old Chicago from 1940s to 2009. If you find any breaking news like September 11th or Beirut from 1982-83, I would want to see that too. Anything from the 70s, 80s too, when I was a kid too. I love your channel and I will support it when I am able to as much as I can. There's lots of Chicago people who would watch your KZfaq channel if they knew about it. It's amazing to see the things from back then because Chicago commercials had prices in their commercials and dates, phone numbers and details of things like locations ad more. So you can really see how things and areas and life have changed.

Yes. Nite Owl was an experiment WFLD used as their version of a newscast since the station at the time had no real news operation aside from Newstalk and Newscene - except they were only 5-15 minutes long! Kind of like some stations would do a "sign-off edition of the news" before ending the day's broadcasting. The inspiration for this was from Britain as were the originators of the Keyfax news. I believe this concept lasted up until Metromedia took over 32 in fall of 1983. I hope this cleared up some of your questions.

Yes this looks primitive compared to today’s graphics. You have to remember this is 1982. The IBM 5150( The First mainstream commercial PC) came out in Aug of 81. All graphics generator of the time looked alike wether it was a local cable company or a broadcast network. Yes we’ve come along way in 40 years

The British stations had a teletext service - they would transmit pages of text and blocky graphics in the vertical blanking interval that could, with a decoder, be seen on demand by the viewer. This began in 1974 with Ceefax on BBC, followed by Oracle on ITV in 1980. Their overnight service would be a selection of pages from teletext played over music, much like this. But WFLD gave their overnight show a bit more production value and pizazz. A 1982 article from New Scientist confirms that WFLD was transmitting this on-demand teletext during the day. Unfortunately the technology never caught on broadly in the US for several reasons, but in Europe it was used until analogue was closed down in the early 10s.

@guspolly
@guspolly 4 жыл бұрын
Rick K. WFLD did transmit browsable pages during the day, but there were very few receivers. Teletext died in the US because it was sold as a subscription, and because it had little to no support from over-the-air broadcasters and relied on cable to be received. This service on WFLD was one of the very few OTA teletext services and it was basically experimental.
