Rotten dot com was the most famous shock site of the early Internet. Although it is most remembered for the horrific images people saw and the occasional twisted humor, the site was actually founded the protest the Communications Decency Act, one of the first attempts by the US government to censor Internet content. Although the act was eventually found to be unconstitutional, rotten remained online for over 20 years.
Throughout that time, they were involved in a great deal of controversies, trolling campaigns and hoaxes. This is a look at some of the highlights of the site's history.

I find it interesting that all of these "think of the children" organisations always blame the content creators/publishers when their sites very clearly is aimed at adults. And if these parents are so concerned with what their child are doing online, why are they allowing them to browse that freely. They are the ones who are responsible for what they allow their children to do online. It's like having a house filled with loaded guns lying around everywhere and then blaming the gun manufacturers when your 3-year old shoots himself...

@Siedler Joe It's not a problem of parents wanting their children to see that shit, it's a problem that kids are curious and also are sheltered too much which makes them want to see and do shit more. Also, alot of these helpless kids you are putting into 1 category with 1 outcome is complete bullshit, yes it does scar some kids and there are creeps who enjoy seeing that nasty shit but there are also just as many if not more who are just curious sbout real life events from a source that has nothing to gain from outright lying about things. We deserve a source who will try to post factual events and pictures or video to go along with said event, we deserve a perspective of the common human and not one of a "high ranking " member of society.

I remember the Rotten site, it was one of those things me and my friends used to nervously visit once in a rare while when we were tired of flashring/albinoBS/ebaums/newgrounds, etc. Most of the shit was just kind of interesting in a Ripley's kind of way (like a black and white photo of a dude casually showing his ass, which was blackish cos it was struck by lightning). But there was occasionally deeply (VERY DEEPLY) regrettable clicks like a pic of a drowned chick lying next to a gutter, she was pasty and bloated like a balloon with soft eyes that looked melted and jello-y. Some of the mental images of what I'd seen there never left me, even as an adult that's on the cusp of 30. But that was kind of the magic of the internet in those days, you never know what you'd find if you carelessly click around. It sometimes felt like you'd see more bizarre personal webpages (usually shittily constructed) than ads. Imagine that.

What if Monica had a gun/knife/pair of scissors/ a tape recorder/bug to plant under the desk while blowing him? Hell, his entire secret service detail should have gone to jail too for allowing someone without a proper pat down to regularly go into the Oval Office. Could you imagine turning on the news and seeing a report about the Oval Office blowing up because someone with a bomb blew off the president? Thankfully for Bill, Monica wasn't politically motivated.

Hey Whang, ever considered doing a video on the history of the tumblr Socially Unacceptable Artwork? I remember first finding their blog a couple years back and finding it interesting just how many really disturbing artworks were in their NSFW section, like hardcore euro guro content involving vocaloid mascots, anime characters, OC's, and etc. They were taken down only to respawn several times before seeming to fade into obscurity.

@@wolfetteplays8894 I'll be honest in that I don't think so. They were up before Undertale and its sequel, and I don't think any of the respawns came up during that time. Some infamous ones I remember from their NSFW section are a one page of vocaloid Kaito cutting himself while crying and I think having his tears wiped (euro guro, and it was fetishized and he looked younger). I remember vocaloid Miku having her head cut off. I'm remembering plenty of scat pics but not specifics.. I also remember an Orochimaru from Naruto torturing and r*ping someone in a h*llscape. Plenty more. I also remember their other sections where they had a great execution but terrible concept for the good artwork that was just plain wtf, and of course a section for just plain bad and ugly artwork for really weird proportions or other weird stuff (some fandom shipping was here, and I remember some either Sonic or Shadow x Shrek)

In an ocean of "We must censor this, for the sanity of future generations" versus "We can't censor this, for the sanity of future generations", both sites just decided "Screw this noise, here's something to piss both sides off and we're gonna do whatever we can to keep this legal. @@stinky9706 My initial assumption is that it was because Mom knew who Joe Kenda was before the show even existed. Every episode of Homicide Hunter takes place in Colorado Springs, which is where we used to live when I was young. Apparently Mom had been living in Colorado Springs before I was even born and we left in 2000 over the mother of all family dramas which I won't go into. Apparently she would read about crimes that Lt. Joe Kenda solved in the papers. In 1996 Joe Kenda retired from the force and in 2011 he got his own show: Homicide Hunter. Only recently have I made notice of her watching this show and I'm not sure when it started exactly. Mom loves to force me to play Skip-Bo and Phase 10 (The most boring card games ever made) and after my sister got a Hulu account I talked her into letting us watch reality TV while we played. Personally, I don't care for most forms of reality TV but it was a good distraction for a while. After running out of episodes of Kitchen Nightmares she asked me if Joe Kenda was on Hulu and I found him. So recently we had been watching this show together while playing mostly Phase 10 since the game usually lasts 40 minutes (The length of each episode). Occasionaly she'd say something like "Oh, yeah I read about this one in the papers." During one of the episodes she named a suspect before the show even did because she recognized the case. While I wasn't as into as her I did find it interesting and was surprised at the show's high budget gore effects. I assumed this was just a trip down memory lane and this was just a thing with MY Mom specifically. But I guess this is a running theme with Moms? Fine by me, murder is actually pretty interesting. There are definitely lamer things she could force me to watch.

Rotten had a lot of great sister sites that unfortunately are no longer updated. Rotten Library, Rotten News, NNDB, GapingMaw, Penny Postcards & Dr Sputnik just to name a few are absolutely fantastic in their own right, but unfortunately hopeless outdated. It's a shame the owner(s) of Rotten didn't pass the torch on to others to continue keeping the site active. What's also notable is they never had ads or anyway to monetize Rotten, so how they went for so long without income is really astonishing in itself.

I remember discovering the site as a kid at a friend's house after school. I thought it was the most disgusting thing i've ever witnessed, but for some odd reason, i couldn't stop watching it, haha. After that, i spent like hours trying to find pictures of Kurt Cobain's body and other dead celebrities, and also of the victims at Columbine. Back then, my family didn't had that much money so i had to wear my brother's trench coat for a while, so i kinda experienced the whole "trench coat ban" at school at some point, but i never got suspended or anything, because i always left my coat at home, and thanks to that, i got sick, haha.

I can’t even remember the exact age I found Rotten. I was just a lover of urban legends and horror stories and I had run out of stuff to read. So I desperately looked through links until I found some site that leaked crime scene photos (no clue if they were real or not). I was shocked, but now I was able to see the injuries described in horror stories. I was morbidly curious. I started searching up the gory imagery described in the horror stories I read. Through that searching, Rotten came up in the search. I was a messed up kid who was just curious. That was all.

I think it's pretty healthy to find just about everything facinating, never hurts to understand things. If anything, it makes people much more well rounded when they decided to find out for themselves why people do XYZ, starts that realisation of why people do stuff and why bad things happen, instead of just making up whatever sounds about right!

My morbid curiosity in dark and disturbing stuff came more in my 20s, I wasn't equipped emotionally to see that shit even in my teens, Twisted Metal Black alone fucked me up and that was 2000s CG. I only ever heard about that kind of really disturbing stuff at school sometimes, and at the time was taken aback and glad I didn't see it. These days, I'm more curious, not that keen on seeing grisly violence and gore, but it's surprisingly fascinating to read about really dark things such as the 1980 New Mexico State Penitentiary, or various war crimes.

Internet culture came pretty late in my country so the first time I (sorta) heard about Rotten was around early 2000's, although basically it all started when I was surfing with a friend in an Internet cafe, and my friend suggested me to search up for that site but he couldn't recall its name. Eventually we settled with "Disgusting pictures" and all we got was a photo of someone's dad sleeping.

I watched 6 Russian conscripts, tied, hands behind their back, laying in the dirt. Looked like it was dawn by the lighting. You could see everything but the embers from the previous night's campfire still glowed in the low light. The sneering Chechen walked up the line of the young conscripts, giggling as he grabbed the small, blunt looking knife. Could be have been more tan a 5 inch blade. The first boy, couldn't have been older than 19, could do nothing but grimace as the sneering Chechen grabbed him by the hair, lifting his head of the ground, exposing his throat. At first he didn't make a noise, he never cried out in pain. Just kept that grimace and his eyes shut tight. When that tiny blade got half way through his windpipe, then the noises started. Blood shot out through his clenched teeth and poured from his mouth, his nose and his neck. The noise of air mixing with blood. Gargling from the inside of his stomach. Involuntary defining sounds of agony - while his mouth remained shut tight. Seeing this wasn't the worst part. Seeing the 5 remaining young men bound in the same way, listening to this happen next to them and hearing the Chechen laugh. That was the hardest part to swallow. I could out myself in their shoes. None of them looked up from the ground. One by one they went down the line. Taking their time. The sun started to come up more and you could see the area glisten bright red. By the 5th conscript they got bored. The cut him loose and played with him a little. Stabbing him in the skull, the neck, the back. He still got up. They let him run a few meters before they dragged him back. He kneeled in all fours like a dog this time, while his head was all but sawn off. Alive and in agony the whole time. I saw this video on rotten when I was 8 and have never seen it again. It's my oldest, clearest childhood memory. I was a weird kid after that. As I grew older I suffered from anxiety and acrophobia. Not as a direct result of that video, but because of a series of events that video set off. Thanks Rotten

I found out about it in HS. Our art teacher gave no fucks at all. We'd just browse it on the one computer in the classroom. Some kids would turn away, some would pretend it was funny with fake-laughs (No idea why, but it was very obvious). Very few were pleasuring themselves, so that was a good sign at least.. I remember very little about it, but some things do stick out: Dude who had his face nose-down turned into a bloody squid from a motorcycle accident. Some guy dead on a train track with a floppy face. Then you have the infamous Tubgirl. I was never that fascinated by gore. It was interesting when I was a youngling for about a second. Now, I'm neither shocked or interested. I do believe, however, that at a certain age, at least seeing some of that stuff is...kinda good for you? For instance, Budd Dwyer, while horrific, has deep layers of social, and psychological questioning attached to it (Filter even did a song about it). I've seen a lot of violence and some death growing up, and I think knowing that life is not like a movie can help kids during potentially traumatic events when they arise. I mean, it's still gonna fuck you up on some level if you have decency in your bones, but going through life with nothing but daises in your brain can unbuckle you if something traumatic ever happens. I also believe some who experience the worst of the internet could get fucked in a very bad way. There's no turning back, and some weak stomachs regret it. It's a messy topic for sure.
@Corvid
@Corvid 5 жыл бұрын
Agree totally, anyone can learn to see such things, and may benefit from that resilience. Seeing death with your own eyes was commonplace not that many hundred years ago!! Seeing really nasty stuff made me aware unconsciously that I was able to see those things without damage in person, and I never had any doubts as an EMT that very little could get to me. But then again, I find major trauma fascinating! Most people have a morbid curiosity, and yeah, it does feel strange and poignant to see someone who was deceased for the first time. I think you've hit on a key life learning point: what tv shows, films, and book show you isn't fact! People often don't drop dead after a single bullet wound to the chest, car's don't blow up GTA style as standard when they crash. Or that most serious fights are over in a matter of seconds. Blood packs and squibs are massive exaggerations of bullet wounds, which don't even bleed until a good few seconds in, and you won't see chunks of gore going everywhere! Death is inevitable, and I think people build a fear of it. Seeing someone go from unsustainable heart rhythm, to cardiac arrest, and then gradually change colour and appear to just become a she of a person... it change my life in a lot of ways.. it made me better at my job to see what people look like when they're on the edge, I look forward to death, and want to know what it feels like, what happens afterwards, if anything. I know that cardiac arrest feels much like passing out, and after than, you don't have senses for long after going unconscious. Sure, the part leading up to that may be painful or distressing, that's all I'd rather not experience. What would scar one person, could be the making of another
