Because no one wants to invest in revitalizing your public transportation infrastructure, specifically when it comes to trains. It's really quite a shame. Imagine a US connected all over, by maglev bullet trains.
@james-p
@james-p 3 жыл бұрын
@@BeardedDanishViking It's not that nobody wants to invest here. We don't have this kind of public transport because we Americans can't behave well enough. There is a large class of Americans who think that public property can be abused and somebody else will clean it up. Look at this Japanese train: It is clean, there are no names scratched into the bathroom mirrors, no stupid graffiti tags painted ANYWHERE, no trash strewn about, no rude noisy people. Even the cheap sleeping area is clean, tidy, and quiet. Nobody's sneakers are stolen. That is because Japanese are respectful of public property, and other people. It cannot exist here in the US. Our public transit is a mess because of the people who ride it. We also spend money on nice public parks here in Los Angeles, but they are full of bums who drink, shoot up drugs, and defecate everywhere. The police don't do anything about them. How are we supposed to let our kids play there? Why would working people want to pay more taxes for more parks, more trains, when we can't use them? Oh, yeah, and when the weather is hot, the bums go sit in our subways all day for the air conditioning. They don't pay anything, they just foul all the seats. I can't imagine a US connected all over by maglev bullet trains. It would be wonderful, but we can't handle it. That really is quite a shame.

@@edennis8578 politeness isn’t the problem, they are just extremely individualistic. That’s also the reason why covid is extremely rampid over there and why people are making a problem out of having to wear a mask, saying it infringes on their freedom. My _Nishijujo_-bound JR Yumesaki line train got delayed by ~5min a few times I remember (back when I was in Osaka in 2012 for holiday). Think it's because of track congestion at _Nishijujo_ station (only 1 track for this line); not sure if it's still the same now

The nobi nobi is fun. If you have the JR full pass the sunrise train is great value if on a budget. Because you catch the train at 10pm (ish) it is classed as one days travel. So we use that day to visit Matsumoto or Sendai and just get back in time to catch it. Use it on your last night and you arrive Tokyo at 7am. Saves two hotel rooms.

Fun fact: Before the Sunrise Izumo/Seto, there were these overnight trains called "Blue Trains". They were sleeper cars hauled by a locomotive (EF65, ED76, EF66, DD51, EF81, etc.) to any point in the Tohoku and Kyushu areas. Their namesake comes from the blue color of the rail cars. East routes are commonly from Tokyo/Ueno/Osaka to Kanazawa/Aomori/Sapporo meanwhile west routes start from Tokyo/Ueno/Kyoto and go towards Shimonoseki/Oita/Kumamoto. The last of the Blue Trains were the Cassiopeia, (considered a Blue Train in all but it's color) a train from Ueno to Sapporo, and was decommisioned in time for the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen.

Yes we do have one. You would probably need to change to another one but you can travel by train. It goes through a tunnel underneath a seabed that connects the main land and Hokkaido. It was built several decades ago so nothing new but you can literally travel everywhere in Japan by train. Our train has the best system in the world there’s no doubt. I lived in London and other countries but Japan has the best public transportation on everything. Try coming here once Covid is over. It’s unlike any other country. Really.

I can't believe how cheap the trains are in Japan. For what you paid for "first class" there, you wouldn't even be able to get a "coach" (just a chair) here in Canada on an overnight train. The beds that you showed for $5 (with "no privacy") START at no less than $150-200 here. It's hard to believe the cost difference.

There is still a "basic fare" (which is the fare for using the train) and a "express train fare", both of which are payable no matter which type of berth you choose for this particular train service. The $5 charge is additional charge.

I see where people got confused on Japan railway's fee structure. Take an example - if you take the same room from Tokyo to Himeji shown from this video, you are paying 1) Base Fare - 10,010 yen ( ~ 97 USD), plus 2)Limited express surcharge - 3,300 yen ( ~ 32 USD), then 3) Accommodation fee - 13,980 yen ( ~135 USD). Therefore, you are paying 27,290 yen (~ 265 USD) for this room in total. Or you can take the "$5" room which is actually ~$135

@@sin-inho1353 Even still, in Canada, the 7-hour run, one-way, from Waterloo (Ontario) to Montreal, was 190 CAD (149 USD), on a chair with very little legroom; and 'Business' is around 370 CAD (290 USD). 265 USD for a frikin' HOTEL ROOM on rails (with shower privilege and a courtesy amenity bag) is a done deal. Period.
