I think part of the problem is the way science is taught from an early age; we're just taught 'this is a fact. Learn it and believe it'. So then in the real world when we're exposed to the uncertainty of scientific results e.g. there's a .0000000000001% chance this may kill you, it seems too big a risk. I think we should be taught the process of the scientific method more, discuss how things came to be known as facts and the absolute necessity of questioning findings and processes as you engage in your own research or are reviewing others. We should also be encouraged/taught to read academic articles at an earlier age. At least that's what I've thought for a good while now. Love the video!

I think the lack of trust also differentiates from olden times because people don't personally know their doctor anymore. Everyone giving medical advise are all strangers, or just metaphysical entities like "science" or various companies.

The media is also responsible. If I relied on some media outlets my understanding of covid 19 and the vaccines would be poor. Churches, schools, clinics and many other institutions have abrogated their responsibility to inform people as well. Dramatic graphs and big numbers are easy to present and grab attention but they don't educate anyone.

Cigarettes, while useless/harmful for acute asthma attacks, CAN and DO help control chronic asthma. I've had asthma since before I started kindergarten, and back then (early 1960s) there were no effective daily asthma meds, though there were some harsh meds that helped with asthma attacks (I had many trips to the ER). I had to lead a fairly laid-back life. No sports, no hard bicycling or running (I could do short sprint intervals with long breaks between). I started smoking in high school in the early 1970s and found I gained much more stamina. Enough so that I somehow managed to make it through US Navy bootcamp and 6 years of active duty (and the bi-annual physical fitness test). I was prescribed my first moderately effective daily asthma meds while in college in 1982, and quit buying cigarettes that same week. Those meds, while a huge improvement, still weren't completely effective, so on bad days I still would beg a cigarette from a friend. That stopped only after I was prescribed Formoterol in the late 1990s. It was fiendishly expensive, but well worth it. It took several more years to find the best combination of meds for my specific needs, but progress was steady. So much so that 13 years ago I took up triathlon, and have competed a Half-Ironman race (also known as a "70.3": 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run), with a Full Ironman race on my bucket list. The thing is, cigarettes made the Navy possible, which in turn made college possible, which made becoming an engineer possible, which meant I could afford expensive asthma meds. So, in a very direct way, I'm doing triathlon today because of cigarettes back then!

I think a big issue is that a lot of the pro-science and pro-trust videos and content comes across in tone similar to 1950s Propaganda Reels Like... if I am explaining anything... I just have a weird mental aversion towards the notion of sounding like on of those shows Just... start watching those old silly things (I'd suggest starting with Duck and Cover--as that is often people's favourite)... and just go through several of them... and then you will slowly develop your own, "oh gog, I cannot say it like that!" defense mechanism

Great explanation!!! 👍👍🙂 I think that many people are „patting on mankind‘s shoulder“ by saying that we have developed a lot in the last 100 years, what is true but in this case not fully, we should be more prepared for future cases that will be similar to this pandemic and quickly. We are often being confronted with amazing science developments, what is great, but with inefficient implementation in massive scale or in this case in global scale, what is not so great... and that‘s because of our inadequate social and political platforms, what is unfortunate. We should find in that platform layer, a better and more efficient social interface or social drive, to be more efficient in implementing the good science. In my opinion organizations like the WHO and UN should be empowered to become more efficient. We are lucky that we aren‘t facing yet a more difficult situation because we weren‘t prepared, luckily we can now be aware and act better to prevent similar situations and of course take care of this one!

Not quite. There is going to remain just enough regulation to prevent competition/snake oil salesmen, but that is it. When they deregulate the market, they're giving all the power to big pharma. The FDA or associated agencies in other countries are just there for Show. They have no real power in most cases. Or they won't use what little power they have effectively.

Are there any models or proof that it won't cause ill effects later. I had tetanus bc I couldn't afford the shot as a kid. So I know they can work and be safe but will it is a question I personally would like to wait and see more historical and empirical data on. Just my thoughts tho

I think there should be a bit more nuance with the people passing on the vaccine as I and quite a few people I know would pass on taking it as we are younger, healthy, and much more likely to be just fine if we do get it, while there are still a lot of people who are vulnerable who still have not had a chance.
@JulieM11
@JulieM11 3 жыл бұрын
My parents feel the same way. While it's good news that people like you won't have severe cases if you happen to catch COVID-19, the vaccine will also help in preventing you from catching it & spreading it to others who /are/ more vulnerable. It's actually very important for "healthy" people to get the vaccine because many people are immunocompromised/too old/too young and can't be vaccinated at all! So we build herd immunity to keep them safe. Hope that made sense!

I am perplexed why I need a vaccine when I am 95% likely to survive the illness. Clearly getting the either the Corona 19 virus or the vaccine adds me to the list of people who cannot give it to anyone, (generally speaking) but with this type of vaccine being new and permanent...so those 2 factors are sufficient in my opinion to wait.
@painted_k9
@painted_k9 3 жыл бұрын
The answer is exactly as you've said-- it reduces transmission. Meaning those who are at greater risk of serious illness and death are less likely to be exposed. If enough people are vaccinated, Covid-19 may die out (or alternatively, become like the flu-- vaccinations modified each year to account for circulating strains). Each of us has a choice to make, based information that is sparser that we'd like. It's not ideal, but... I know which I'll make.

The question isn't if the vaccine will prevent the disease. The question is how long does the protection last? The vaccine works. How long it will work for is the true question. Because part of the problem is, that there have been people who have had covid experiencing reinfection. So more information is needed before actual immunity to covid can really be determined once given the vaccine. Are those cases of reinfection flukes or are they a sign of something more or something different happening.
@scarletspidernz

@@zeratulthedark2985Supposedly the immunity conferred by the vaccine will typically last longer, or at least a more predictable length of time, than natural immunity. Earlier studies show that natural protection against reinfection is at least loosely proportional to how severe your case was. More severe cases seem to have longer natural immunity, while milder cases are more prone to reinfection. In terms of the vaccine, they have estimated 2 years of protection, but have also said that there may well be booster shots needed as they continue to study it.

@@TheFroggynator Sounds like you're one of the luckier ones (for now), however, be aware that there are a massive range of symptoms that can be attributed to the experimental medical procedure, which the majority of the general public have no idea about because of the blatant worldwide suppression of this information & data...

Why were/are you here in Tucson? Because of this video or something else? If it wasn't for COVID, I'd say you should do a hangout somewhere for your Tucson fans!

Might be worth delving into racial / ethnic mistrust in the U.S. medical system, and its roots in our "complicated" history.

I think her experience was quite misleading. It may have happened to her but I didn't feel the injection at all and had absolutely no side effects. None, zilch... Ymmv. I do know the value of vaccines as I got Polio in 1953, just before the vaccine became available. My youth was spent mostly in hospitals having surgery upon surgery.

I believe vaccines work but I fear how dependent we are gonna get on them and other medical interventions on natural selection

Natural selection hasn't applied to humans since we invented surplus agriculture. I'm not concerned about that.

Wait what? We've been relying on medical intervention for a few hundred years now. Hell even the ancient Egyptians had dentistry and eye surgery (modern society ended up revisiting those mechanisms for eye surgery only with lasers). And as for vaccines, we've been using them since the late 1700s/early 1800s. So do you want us to go back to a time where it was normal to lose your family to a preventable illness?
