It is very common in Asian media of the family “trope”, that you never see the Dad because he is working. Because a lot of the time, it’s true. A lot of fathers don’t have a lot of time. If you see how China and Japan have overwork exhaustion, especially in the corporate world, it makes sense.

The game at the end is mahjong. The significance of what Rachel does during the game is she gives away a piece she needed to win so that Nick's mom could win. When she shows all of her tiles before she walks away, its her showing that she didn't play to win like she teaches her students and like Eleanore references in their conversation when she says "Only a fool folds a winning hand." This one simple action shows that Rachel loves nick enough to let him go, that family is first, and that she's a lot more like Eleanore than Eleanor was giving her credit for. That game is what changes her mind about letting Nick marry her. I also just love Rachel's mom after all of this. That look back at Eleanor gives me chills!

Astrid is my favorite character in this movie. Not only is she gorgeous and classy, but she is so kind and she obviously cares so much about her family. I love how quickly she warmed to Rachel just because she knew how much she meant to Nick. Thanks for another fantastic reaction guys! ❤

I dont know why but that wedding scene really made me feel emotional every time.

The Green ring used in the movie is Michelle Yeoh’s personal ring. Michelle didn’t believe her character would wear any of the rings the production company planned on using and so she told the director she had a ring that was more appropriate. The director loved it so that’s what she wore. I’m sure the value of that ring has skyrocketed after being used in the movie.

I'd like to give some clarification to the post credits scene with Astrid. We don't see the exposition in the film, but in the book it is revealed that that guy is actually her former boyfriend whom she chose Michael over. So it's not a love-out-of-nowhere trope, but rather an old flame returned.

This is probably one of the few great romcoms of the 2010's. I lived for the Asian representation even though I'm Black, I love how they tell stories.

some quick fun facts bc i went to school in sg 1. the church is in a shopping mall but it was originally a school and orphanage. now the one school has turned into 11. during it's anniversary the schools held a mass and we filled the national stadium 2. accents play a big part in telling someone's social economic status in sg. like even more than in the US because none of it is regional. the people who sound british, and not only british, but super posh british, is definitely only the very rich people 3. sg's property market is insane, so imagine owning a house like that in NYC. it's insane 4. hawkers are awesome. i used to get food in one after school and you can get a meal and get super full for like SGD 2.50. you can always find dads and grandpas drinking beer and hanging out in one 5. the author of the book this was based on was missing from the sg premiere because he evaded military service so if he came he would be arrested lmao

Really appreciate Oak opening up about his experiences! As someone coming from an Indian culture as well and personally experiences the frustrations of dating on a daily - the judgemental culture doesn't even go away when the other person comes from a family that supposedly "checks all the boxes"! I don't know if that helps, but I thought I'd mention it 😂 Real story: I once heard a set of aunts talking smack about a girl THEY had hand-picked at their nephew's engagement party!! It's wild. In many Asian cultures but especially Indian cultures, there's this concept that you're not just marrying an individual, but you're marrying an entire family - and with it comes the whole shebang of reputations and public image and et cetera. It's a vicious cycle! But fingers crossed that with this new generation, we have so many people who are finally brave enough to take a stand against those parental expectations and break those toxic cycles. I have seen numerous friends go through it, and while it's never pretty (especially when they're in LGBT+ relationships), it's still important and they're making it through to the other side, which is amazing to see. And it's making a difference for the next generation 🤞

I never want to spend that much on a wedding infact I prefer no wedding but this was an absolutely stunning wedding the running stream and botanical gardens theme was magical.

Regarding the mid-credits scene, the guy Astrid sees is her ex-fiance, from her college days. But her family wouldn't allow her to marry him. With Rachel and Nick making their relationship work, it gives Astrid hope to reignite that old flame.

The mid-credit scene with Gemma Chen’s Astrid looking over to the guy is Harry Shum Jr., who appeared in Everything Everywhere All At Once as Chad, the Raccacoonie Chef. Shum’s scene in Crazy Rich Asians played Charlie Wu-Astrid’s ex-fiance, who will have a more prominent role in part 2 of CRA.

idk if this will make the oak feel a little better but from my experience, in asian families, the idea is that when a girl gets married, she becomes a part of the husbands family. the dads in my family felt like they are losing their daughter when their daughters got married. and i don't know a single dad that did not completely side eye their daughters' boyfriends ever lol. it's definitely partly cultural

Wow, having this movie hit Oak is surprising yet touching. That's why I love movies and books, as it can be surprising what resonates with people. Edit: I need to read the books but Nick always kinda pissed me off with how naive he was with how unprepared he allowed Rachel to be and didn't help her with how she would have to adapt. Astrid's husband felt like he wasn't enough but instead of dealing with it he then turned around and made her feel like she was too much meaning not enough for him. It also sucked that it impacted his relationship with his son.

The amazing thing about this film is that it was made on a budget of $30 million. The director was offered more, but specifically wanted to show what could be done by filming in Asia. Oh, and the emerald ring is part of Michelle Yeoh's personal collection. She lent it to the production so that it would look real. Speaking of cultural differences, there's a great social psychology experiment that really highlight the differences between how East Asians and North Americans see the world. I'm going to try to simplify as much as possible: A 5-year-old child is shown a page full of stickers and asked to indicate their favourite. Their mother then indicates their favourite. The researcher shows their favourite (randomly generated). The child is then shown a selection of the three favourites and told they can keep whichever one they want. North American and European children almost always select the one they said was their favourite, then it's 50/50 with the other two. Asian children are 50/50 with theirs and their mother's favourites, almost never take the third. The point psychologically is that people in East Asian cultures grow up thinking of their family as an extension of themselves. Their mother's desires are just as important as their own. It's not that family is more important than the individual, it's that the individual is part of a family. It's a group identity. What's good for the family is what's good for the individual.

I'm glad you guys watched this. The wealth depicted in it is staggering. I can't imagine how Rachel felt. I love the commentaries at the end of your videos and especially that Oak goes last because I never know what to expect, but know it will be deep. Thanks for opening up. Big thanks to The Oak for sharing a part of his past that the movie had a profound impact on him. Yes, the movie is cultural, and may seem over the top for many western viewers. But for me being asian, it wasn't cultural enough, and I understand that it's a movie that needs to speak to a wider audience. Michelle Yeoh as the powerful mother figure is very accurate to many famiies because if the husband is away on business, it is the wife's responsibility to be sure everything in the household is run well and a tight ship. The family's reputation and image is very very important in that world they live in. And she also talks about building for generations, not for just the present. Which is very different than western culture. I've read all three books, and the reason they threw in that tiny credit scene with Astrid is because the second book is primarily about her. Astrid by far was my favorite character in the movie and the book. Thank you and your patreons for selecting this movie to react to.

To be honest, I always come for The Oak's comments. The other two are a bunch of wholesome goofballs and has great insights too but The Oak always has a lot of wise things to say. I came for the reaction to Crazy Rich Asians, and Oak's opening up really got me. I've been through a similar situation, and it took me time to reclaim my security inside. It is the point why CRA is not only a great romantic comedy. I am happy not to be alone in this.

This movie really connects with me because I experienced the same judgement from my first boyfriend’s Asian mother. There was a real cultural clash and she didn’t want him to date me so she would tell him horrible things about my parents. He really fought to be with me, and I was prepared to go through it but it was a hurtful and damaging experience to go through. I always love to hear Oak’s perspective on movies and his own experiences. The depth of your reactions is so refreshing!

Finally!!! its a hoot. plus all the cultural things are prefect. the aunties knowing everything. the mom's saying "you're fat" instead of i love you or miss you. and the Mahjong game. i grew up around family's like this going to celebrations and family functions; this movie was dead on. will always be one of my favorites.

The opening scene was actually a look-back to decades ago in London when Nick and Astrid as kids were brought there by both their mothers for Boarding School, that was why they had to stay in a hotel. Also, Nick and Astrid are first cousins, not siblings. Astrid's Mom is the sister of Nick's Dad.

The director always had an intense response to Coldplay’s “Yellow,” considering obviously having to navigate the stereotype of the color of Asian skin tones his whole life. He asked Coldplay if they could use it. At first I believe they were concerned it may not be the best idea coming from White singers, but the song meant so much they agreed. The translation as far as I know isn’t exact. It’s beautiful though. It makes me cry. I’ve never listened to the song the same way again.

To answer your question about why the mom would treat Rachel cruelly after dealing with years of the same treatment from her mother in law, I think it's because humans feel that because they went through something and overcame it, those coming after them should go through the same or similar stuff. I hear this from parents who worked hard to get something as a teen and in turn, feel their kids should work hard as well while never stopping to consider how things have changed compared to when they grew up to make that same goal significantly more difficult to achieve. I've always been of the mindset that if I can, I want to provide help and guidance so that the person after me has it a little easier rather than just as hard or harder but sometimes that mindset seems rare on a larger scale.

It was interesting listening to Oak talk about his experience. As an adult, I've only ever dated far above my class once and while, and it's great, until reality kicks in. If you're prepared for it ahead, I'm sure it can work out, of if you're like me, you find out the hard way. Wealth aside, there's a huge power imbalance, and it can sneak up on you. This was a great movie, but yeah, uncomfortable memories, I guess.

The Oak opening up about his past and relating so much to the movie made me really like this commentary/channel. I know not everyone can relate to an Asian oriented story but him sharing his story really added a depth of understanding that I really appreciate from this channel.

What the Oak said at the end really resonates with me. I'm Asian and I'm going to America this Fall for college and I already know that it's not a good idea for me to date an American guy 'cause no matter what, he will never be invited to family dinners.

There’s a lot of significance behind financial stability when it comes to families of colour. In the society we live in, there is a lot of emphasis on race/ethnicity, and in the western society, one may only be viewed for their race/ethnicity. A prime example of this is in the very first scene, when the hotel workers were being racist towards Michelle and her family. Especially for immigrant t these area look like - they even made a show about two kids, one from Beijing and one from a rural area, and had them swap lives for a week, Stephanie Soo made a video about the show and I recommend you watch it to fully grasp how deprived they were living in those rural areas). These rural areas most likely don’t have any stable/proper infrastructure. The families living there are self-sustained - so they may own rice paddies and make their food from that but also have to sell it. Electricity isn’t common, the house may not be properly made or is instead self-made improperly, the toilet may not even be inside the house, and they most likely have low-quality/self-made household items. (Im not sure about other countries, but I know this is also a standard for some areas of Nigeria, where I’m from). So with the image of poverty in their country being so drastically negative, you may be able to understand why some families don’t wish to associate with that way of living. I’m not condoning discriminatory behaviour towards those of lower classes, but it may be understandable why someone like Michelle wouldn’t want Constance, someone who grew up poor, “infiltrating” the wealthy family and (in her eyes) tarnishing the image she’s, in part, built for them, whilst she had to struggle and fight whilst doing so. And, as I said before, internationally, wealth is equal to power and respect, so if Michelle were to allow someone of low-class with a fraction of the amount of power and respect that she has into the family, what does that say about their image? What does that say about their own respect and power? What does that say about everything she’s built for herself if she lets herself associate with someone like that? Sort of like birds of a feather flock together. Once again, I don’t support this way of thinking at all. But in African and Asian communities, money is a high priority, to ultimately make sure you aren’t struggling or in any danger in this brave new world, and people around you sniff you out and talk behind your back when you dare to go against these traditionalist ideals. News spreads incredibly quick across the world when it come to people of colour gossiping (as we saw in the movie with people in China finding out Henry Golding had a girlfriend within minutes. So it’s easy to understand why Michelle is such a condescending control-freak, with both her background and environment, where anyone can turn their back on you and disapprove. It’s all about power. Whoever read this far, you must be very bored. But thank you for indulging in my sub-par explanation of the Coloured Western experience 🤗

Oh man, I love this movie! Im not a fan of romcoms but this, I will watch over again. Since you’ve been reacting to movies Michelle Yeoh has been in, would you consider the drama Memoirs of a Geisha? Such a well done movie.

Aww I love this movie. Its based on the first book of a trilogy, and in the books the dad only ever briefly shows up. He doesn't have the biggest role anyways, pretty much spends his time in Australia, fishing and drinking coffee coz the hussle in Singapore doesn't interest him one bit and he is truely wealthy enough to afford not to care. There was also a pretty important deleted scene, at the end in the montage where Eleanor goes to visit her son in the hotel. They have a brief conversation about their principles in the past, where Nick tells her that he understands her motives, but he wishes she understood that he needed his mom sometimes too. Of course he loves his grandma, but it wasnt the real thing for him too. I hope they make the next 2 books too, especially the third gives great insights into the Ah Mahs past, which I extremely want to see on the screen.

I, too, was waiting for the dad to show up. I think he wasn't shown to show how much family responsibility and pressure Eleanor has to take on alone without him, the same way Rachel has to deal with Nick's family without him too. But definitely wish there was a scene with Nick talking to his dad and Eleanor with her husband to get family resolution. But I guess in real life that rarely happens.

I loved the Oak opening up the end there. This hit home for me, too. So glad you guys picked up on all the nuances especially with the layers of Eleanor's character and how she continues to be judged by her own MIL. One of my favorite scenes that doesn't get touched on a lot is when Nick and Rachel are talking after the disastrous bachelorette party. He owns his mistakes and they were receptive to each other and it was a very mature conversation - this is the gold standard. I rooted for this couple because they had a wonderful non-toxic relationship.

This is one of the most beautiful,sweet,romantic movie i have ever seen. The couple is so cute,nothing toxic about their relationship and so full of love. And what makes this movie so good is the fact the is not just about their relationship,there's some focus on others characters too.

As an Asian, I was happy to see so many Asians on the big screen, and with no martial arts! Although I admit, Crazy Broke Asians would've been more relatable to me and my family!

Sadly, she is currently suffeing from a condition and recently posted a message saying that it's getting harder to survive every day. Watching this again, seeing her again, makes me sad. My childhood was blessed because she's an amazing actress and mom.❤

I think most Asians think it was okay--yeah, it touched on some things that are common among Asians but it was still a light touch and only showed rich, educated, light-skinned Asians so from a representation standpoint, it hardly breaks any barriers or stereotypes. I really enjoyed your reaction though bc I realized how important cross-sections of identity are. Americans love the idea of pursuing happiness and chasing passions. Asians love legacy and legacy is built on power and influence so families are the number one agent for those. As an Asian American, I often felt like I had to temper my individual hopes and dreams especially when it went against the grain or typical expectations of what a young woman of my ethnic group should be like. Like Rachel, I went around unapologetically American because that's what I believed. I'm 40 now and even though I still side with Rachel in this movie, there's a newer part of me that understands Eleanor even though I still don't agree with her. To me, it's understanding what you're in and the power of the decisions you make. Oak, I'm really happy for you bc it seemed like this movie helped you come to a new understanding of your own past situation and I think you're right--in the face of everything, she still chose you so you were worth everything. ❤

I’m Filipino and your background is important especially when it comes to having money. We Filipinos can be so judgmental. I have an uncle and his sister recently passed away this month and he asked is nephews, his sister’s sons to take over her funeral and not the husband because they didn’t accepted him of his background. The husband was like a caretaker of their dad because he was poor. He was taken into the family. My uncle’s sister fell in love with him but my uncle and his other siblings didn’t approve because he has no money. Until this day, they still don’t acknowledge him. Even when they visit the sister lying on the hospital bed, they ignored him. And his sons, they aren’t backing him up, they aren’t standing up to their dad because of the mom’s family. My uncle he’s the kind of uncle who is laid back and can give you life lessons, he the comedic uncle that everyone loves. but to think he would have this side of him because he didn’t approve that kind of guy for his sister to marry scares me about dating someone. I’m scared if I ever date someone who isn’t rich or has a bit of money, he wouldn’t approve. Yeah money is important because you take care of yourself with things you can spend as a way to survive but its important to be accepted as yourself. Be yourself. I love this movie because it has lots of life lessons and advice. And I also understand completely with the culture and traditions.

This is one of the rare instances where I enjoyed the movie more than the book. The book was good, but the movie was just so much fun to watch.

This is a great reaction. I love when you guys get invested in a good one. You express yourselves so genuinely and it’s appreciated. It triggered memories inside you that brought up emotions and you were able to process and understand them and brought clarity and some peace of mind about your past situation (it was heartwarming to say the least).
